Care home residents enjoy an afternoon of musical connection
Residents at Barchester’s Cheverton Lodge Care Home in Islington were treated to a wonderful afternoon of music therapy thanks to GP and broadcaster, Dr Phil Hammond, and Kissing It Better, a charity which promotes connection through music. The charity brought along some talented singers who soon had everyone singing, clapping and dancing along to some classic tunes.
Dr Phil Hammond has for many years held the view that connection is vital to wellbeing and that music is a great way to help us connect. Through their music therapy sessions, charity Kissing It Better brings great joy to many different sectors of the community. The session at Cheverton Lodge care home not only brought joy through singing and dancing but also through helping to unlock some cherished memories.
There were many favourites during the afternoon’s singalong, ‘When I’m 64’ was a popular choice and ‘When the Red, Red, Robin’ sparked a debate about when it first came out - Helen, the home’s resident ambassador’ guessed almost to the year, which was 1926. Liz, another resident, especially loved the old classic ‘Daisy Bell’, she commented: “When I hear the music, I am immediately transported back to my old music lessons growing up.”
Ritu Kuruti, General Manager at Cheverton Lodge remarked: “Music is so therapeutic, it puts a smile on everyone’s face. We are so grateful to Dr Phil Hammond and Kissing It Better for coming to sing for us, they are so talented and we enjoyed their visit so much. It was especially lovely to see the joy it brought our residents to be able to sing along to so many old favourites with them and then chat about the memories the songs provoked, it was a really lovely afternoon.”
