Residents at HC-One’s Greenacres Care Home in Huddersfield have been getting creative and connecting with nature as they prepare for the RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch, the UK’s largest annual wildlife survey encouraging people of all ages to observe and record birds in their gardens.

As part of a small group activity programme, residents have been enjoying a variety of hands-on activities, including baking, bread making, and crafting fat seed balls to attract birds to the care home’s garden. These preparations will give residents the perfect opportunity to take part in the nationwide survey and see how many different bird species visit over the Big Garden Bird Watch weekend.

Sarah Tomczynski, Home Manager at HC-One’s Greenacres Care Home, said: “Bird watching is a fantastic way for our residents to engage with the outdoors, stimulate their senses, and enjoy some friendly competition. It’s wonderful to see them creating seed balls, spotting birds, and sharing stories together, activities that promote both mental wellbeing and social interaction.”

The Big Garden Bird Watch, organised by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), encourages everyone to take a moment to observe wildlife in their local area, contributing to a nationwide snapshot of bird populations. For Greenacres residents, it also provides an enriching experience that combines creativity, learning, and a sense of connection to the wider community.

Residents are eagerly looking forward to counting the birds that visit their garden and celebrating the diversity of wildlife around them.
