Residents at HC-One’s Fir Trees Care Home in Dukinfield have been enjoying a truly royal experience, thanks to Beryl Owen, aged 93, affectionately known as “Queen Beryl” by staff and fellow residents. One of the home’s most cherished members, Beryl has captured hearts with her vivacious personality, humour, and fascinating life story.
Beryl, who initially came to Fir Trees for respite care in December 2025 after spending Christmas with her family, had faced challenges living alone. She had fallen at home multiple times and, at first, was hesitant to accept care. It wasn’t until Home Manager Nicole Gunning and Deputy Manager Sharon Smith visited her and spoke about simple pleasures, like shopping at Marks and Spencer’s, that Beryl began to see what life could be like at the home.
Born with a clever mind and a flair for creativity, Beryl once made beautiful wedding dresses with her daughter and loved creating other handmade items. She carved her own path in life and met her husband at 20. They shared 63 wonderful years together, raising two children, Ivan and Michelle, both of whom she proudly notes have grown into remarkable adults.
Beryl’s decision to stay permanently at Fir Trees in January 2026, followed several days of discussion and a visit from her social worker. The decision to stay came naturally as she embraced the companionship, care, and fun the home offers. Her daughter Michelle expressed relief and happiness that her mother is now safe, engaged, and thoroughly enjoying life.
“I’m living my life again,” Beryl shared, praising the care and support of Fir Trees’ staff. She even describes the home as being like a “5-star hotel,” reflecting the warm, welcoming, and supportive environment the team provides every day.
A lively spirit, Beryl thrives on socialising with fellow residents and staff. She loves shopping, particularly at Marks and Spencer’s, and enjoys joking with staff. She also delights in breakfast rituals, group conversations, and joining in all the activities the home offers. Fir Trees’ Wellbeing Coordinator, Katie Hey, has been instrumental in helping Beryl fulfil her wish for regular outings and adventures.
Nicole Gunning, Home Manager at Fir Trees Care Home, said: “It’s wonderful to see Beryl embracing life so fully. Our team is committed to creating a place where every resident feels valued, supported, and able to enjoy each day. Beryl’s happiness and decision to stay with us permanently is the greatest reward for all the hard work our staff put in.”
Beryl’s story is a shining example of how Fir Trees goes beyond care to help residents rediscover joy, independence, and connection, turning what started as respite care into a vibrant new chapter of life.
