Residents at Sir Aubrey Ward House are enjoying their very own cinema thanks to a thoughtful gift from a resident’s daughter, Mary.
After chatting with Home Manager Wendy Luck about ways to enrich daily life, Mary suggested transforming an upstairs room into a cosy screening space—an idea inspired by her own childhood.
I grew up going to the pictures with my family and have such warm memories of those trips,” she said. “My mum used to go a couple of times a week when she was young, and we carried on going together especially to musicals for a treat.
Working to a careful budget, Mary donated time and materials to create a welcoming room with vibrant décor, comfortable seating, and a projector: somewhere that feels “special the moment you step inside.” She drew inspiration from modern boutique cinemas, adding little touches that make a big difference: personalised tickets, popcorn, and sweet treats.
What matters most,” Mary explained, “is that residents and families can use the space to watch favourite films or even show old family photos and videos so everyone can enjoy it together.
Now a regular feature of the activities calendar, the cinema afternoons brings residents together for nostalgic classics such as Singing in the Rain, chosen for their familiar songs and feel-good stories. The effect is immediate.
Residents shared their excitement, “It really feels like going to the cinema again. I love getting my ticket and sitting down with everyone. Singing in the Rain brought back so many memories, I couldn’t stop smiling.”
Beyond the smiles, the room has a deeper purpose. “Research into dementia suggests cinema can offer real benefits: a shared, enjoyable experience that can comfort people and help with symptoms like apathy,” Mary noted. The space has also become a calm “chill-out” spot for visiting families, somewhere to relax together away from the bustle of the day.
Wendy Luck, Home Manager said: “The cinema has quickly become a highlight of the week. It encourages residents to socialise, supports emotional wellbeing, and offers gentle stimulation through music and storytelling. We’re incredibly grateful to Mary for her creativity and generosity, this gift has made a meaningful difference to daily life here.”
Mary hopes to enhance the space further over time “a pull-back curtain and classic cinema chairs would add even more atmosphere” but for now she’s delighted with the response. “It’s been a success, and I’ve loved being able to give back and support a home which supports my mum.”
This project reflects the spirit of partnership at Sir Aubrey Ward House, where families, residents, and the care team work together to create moments that matter.
