Residents at Parklands Care Home in Bedwas, South Wales, are enjoying a heartwarming love story straight out of a classic romance. Billy and Dawn Owen, a married couple originally from Wolverhampton, have found joy and connection in music throughout their lives and continue to do so today.

The couple first met when they were both 17 at the Queens Ballroom in Wolverhampton. Billy and his friends asked Dawn and her friend to dance to Halfway to Paradise, and they never looked back. Dawn, who was Billy’s first girlfriend, would often watch him practice as he was the lead singer and guitarist in his band, The Robots. Their shared love of music blossomed into a lifelong partnership, and on 24th February 1968, they were married at St Bartholomew’s Church in Wednesbury. Dawn wore a long white dress trimmed with fur for the special day.

Billy and Dawn went on to build a family, having a son and a daughter, and now enjoy the company of two grandchildren. In their dancing days, their favourite moment was at the end of the evening when the Bob Potter Band would play It’s Late, It’s Late, Gotta Get On Home, a signal that it was home time.

Today, Billy and Dawn continue to share their love for music at Parklands, often sitting together, tapping along to their favourite tunes, and singing with joy. “Music is the food of love,” they say, and at Parklands, that love is clearly abundant.

Marie Evans, Senior Wellbeing Coordinator at the home, said: “It is truly wonderful to see Billy and Dawn together. Their story is a beautiful reminder of the joy that music and shared passions can bring, not just in youth, but throughout life. Residents and staff alike are inspired by their enduring love and the happiness they bring to everyone around them.” Staff at the care home cherish the couple’s story as an example of enduring love, companionship, and shared passions. Staff love watching them together, not only as a love story spanning decades, but also as a reminder of how shared hobbies, like music, can strengthen a relationship.
