Residents at Bernard Sunley, our Woking-based residential, nursing and dementia care home, have had a heart-warming, romantic and fun time celebrating this year’s Valentine’s Day. “To celebrate this year’s Valentine’s Day, we decided to do something a bit different for all the residents,” said Andy Cumper, Bernard Sunley’s Registered Manager. “We had a full day of interactive activities and also, for the first time, created our very own romantic pop-up restaurant in our bright and cosy conservatory for everyone – couples, friends, family and loved ones – to enjoy a delicious Valentine’s Day themed lunch, which was specially created by our Chef, Morgan.”
“To start the Valentine’s celebrations, we hosted a romantic arts and crafts session,” continued Monika Ahmed, one of the care home’s Activities Coordinators. “It’s true what they say, teamwork really does make the dream work as the residents worked together and created a stunning love heart piece of artwork which we hung in The Sunflower Lounge for everyone to see and admire.” “We then opened the doors to our very own Valentine’s Day pop-up restaurant,” added Ewelina Wagner, Bernard Sunley’s other Activities Coordinator. “Our Chef created the most delicious Valentine’s Day menu, which left everyone spoilt for choice.”
“Each romantic course was scrumptious, and everyone agreed the lunch was an absolute gourmet delight and feast,” added Andy. To start, residents, their family members, friends and loved ones indulged in Roasted Red Pepper and Squash Soup or Twice Baked Cheddar Cheese Soufflé, followed by a choice of Braised Beef Ragù served with Spaghetti and Garlic Doughballs or Roasted Cauliflower and Pea Risotto served with Crispy Celeriac. For dessert Lemon Meringue Pie with Fresh Cream or Raspberry Crème Brûlée with Homemade Shortbread completed the gastronomic, delightful experience."
“For the residents who were not able to join the meal in the Valentine’s Day restaurant, we wanted to make sure that they still felt the love we have for them and were able to participate in the day. To do this, we had a romantic set-up in each of their bedrooms so they could enjoy the day and the Valentine’s Day feast,” added Monika. “The Valentine’s Day pop-up restaurant was a great success. Everyone who came along said what an amazing job Monika and Ewelina had done decorating the conservatory and hosting the event,” continued Andy.
The Valentine’s Day celebrations continued after lunch with the residents relaxing, enjoying a drink together and sharing their own romantic stories.
“It was really beautiful to be able to hear their wonderful stories,” said Ewelina.
To bring the Valentine’s Day celebrations to a close, the residents put on their dancing shoes and took part in a fun dancing session with the very talented Katie Lewis. “The dancing session was fantastic,” continued Monika. “The residents got into the Valentine’s groove and had a marvellous time, dancing, singing and joining in with Katie.”
“It was a truly special day, and love, laughter and happiness were definitely in the air throughout the care home,” concluded Andy.
