Karuna Manor Care Home proudly celebrated World Poetry Day last week with a deeply enriching and culturally vibrant event that brought residents, families, and staff together in a shared appreciation of poetic expression, memory, and music. The highlight of the celebration was the special appearance of Singe Narayan, whose presence elevated the atmosphere and created an unforgettable experience for everyone in attendance. With their soulful voice and heartfelt delivery, Singe Narayan performed a selection of beautiful ghazals and expressive shayaris, filling the room with melodies and verses that resonated strongly with the diverse cultural backgrounds of the residents. Many residents were visibly moved as familiar ghazals transported them back to cherished moments from their youth, while the rhythmic flow of the shayaris encouraged reflection, conversation, and smiles. The celebration also featured a series of resident-led poetry readings, where individuals shared their favourite poems as well as personal pieces inspired by family memories, spirituality, and life experiences. Staff members supported the event by hosting a creative corner where residents were encouraged to write short poems of their own, resulting in touching handwritten verses that captured themes of love, gratitude, resilience, and the strong sense of community that defines Karuna Manor. Families who attended contributed by sharing poems and messages in English, Hindi, and Gujarati, creating an intergenerational and multilingual celebration that reflected the home’s rich cultural tapestry. Throughout the afternoon, the home was filled not only with poetry and music but also with warmth, joyful conversations, and a sense of togetherness that extended well beyond the scheduled programme. Home Manager, Payal Chhabra expressed immense pride in the event, noting how meaningful it was to see residents engage so enthusiastically with artistic expression. They shared that poetry and music play an important role in supporting emotional wellbeing, memory recall, and cognitive stimulation—key elements of Karuna Manor’s holistic and person-centred approach to care. The Home Manager also thanked Singe Narayan for their generosity, talent, and ability to connect so naturally with residents, many of whom expressed gratitude for being able to enjoy performances reminiscent of cultural traditions they hold dearly. The event concluded with refreshments and an informal gathering where residents admired an exhibition of their own poems displayed across the lounge area, sparking conversations and encouraging many to continue exploring creative writing. This year’s World Poetry Day celebration at Karuna Manor not only honoured the global significance of poetry but also reaffirmed the home’s commitment to offering meaningful, culturally inclusive activities that enrich residents’ lives. The success of the event has already inspired the team to plan future creative and musical gatherings that nurture expression, connection, and joy within the community.
