Residential and care at home provider and registered charity, Care South, has donated £1,000 to The Memory Box Foundation.

The Memory Box Foundation runs a monthly service to support people living with dementia, or mental health issues, by providing themed ‘Memory Boxes’ to care homes and libraries across Dorset and Hampshire. The box themes and contents are rotated each month and are filled with memorabilia and items to spark memories, encouraging conversation. The registered charity also runs other initiatives, including The Open Teapot, which is a monthly community-based reminiscence session, based in Hampshire.

It is the latest beneficiary of Care South’s Community Fund, operated by the not-for-profit care provider, which gives back to community groups, services and organisations which directly benefit Care South’s care home residents, care at home clients, or staff.

Kayte West, Founder of The Memory Box Foundation, said: “We are incredibly grateful to receive this generous donation which will enable us to support more people in the community, who may be at risk of feeling lonely or socially isolated. We have delivered Memory Boxes to a number of Care South’s homes over the years and have seen first-hand the difference that they make to the wellbeing of their residents. It is lovely to see a smile appear on a resident’s face when an item sparks a happy memory for them, which can also add to the care home team’s understanding of a resident’s life history.”

Care South’s Community Fund donation was presented to Kayte by Simon Bird, CEO of Care South, Tracy Walker, Home Manager at Wickmeads, and Charlotte Mitchell, Resident Activities & Lifestyle Lead.

Simon Bird, CEO of Care South, said: “The Memory Box Foundation is a fantastic local cause, which provides a simple but powerful way to encourage conversation between residents, including those living with dementia, which can help them discover new shared interests. We are proud to support the Memory Box Foundation through our Care South Community Fund and look forward to hearing about the positive impact that our donation will have on the wider community.”
