Monmouthshire Nursing Home Throws Mad Hatter’s Tea Party

Gibraltar Nursing Home in Monmouth recently celebrated National Tea Day by throwing a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, inspired by Alice in Wonderland, across the home’s households. Each household decorated their dining tables and communal areas with objects from the story; tables were strewn with chequered tablecloths, decorative teapots, teacups, novelty-sized playing cards, balloons and more! By holding several, smaller afternoon teas across the home, family members (residents) were able to come together and take part from the comfort in their own familiar surroundings. Relatives were also encouraged to join their loved ones for the occasion. Team members stepped into character for the afternoon, appearing as the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, the Queen of Hearts and many others, moving through the home and between rooms, stopping for conversations along the way. One team member’s daughter joined dressed as Alice, handing out cupcakes as she went, which drew plenty of smiles. A few of the team even chose to come in on their days off to be a part of it! The kitchen prepared a traditional afternoon tea, served on tiered cake stands. Heart-shaped scones with jam and cream sat alongside finger sandwiches, jam tarts and iced cupcakes, with softer options including puréed sandwiches and jellies available for those with difficulties swallowing so that everyone could enjoy the experience. A simple ritual like afternoon tea is something that can feel familiar to many people. Putting a spin on it with a theme gives people something different to notice and talk about, while still keeping that sense of sitting together, sharing time and enjoying a cuppa and a treat. The event was organised by the home’s COGS Committee (Creating Occupation in Gibraltar and Supporting Social Skills), who plan various events and activities throughout the year, including fundraising efforts that help support future events within the home. Home Manager Verity shared, ‘It was lovely to see our family members enjoying the special decorations and having a laugh at our crazy costumes.
