Silvanna Court Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes Group, has been recognised for its commitment to dementia care after securing third place in the Runwood Homes Group Dementia Champion Competition 2026, launched for Dementia Action Week.
The recognition highlights the great work of Dementia Champions Deby and Leah, whose dedication, compassion, and innovative approaches continue to make a meaningful difference to residents living with dementia.
As Dementia Champions, Deby and Leah play an important role within the home, ensuring new residents are warmly engaged and supported from the moment they arrive. They meet with family members to gain a deeper understanding of each individual resident, helping to deliver truly person-centred care tailored to personal histories, interests, and preferences.
Their support extends to colleagues throughout the home, creating an open and supportive culture around dementia care. One new staff member shared:
“It feels good to know that I can get information and support when I need to about my residents with dementia, thanks to Leah and Deby.”
Deby and Leah have introduced a number of inspiring initiatives designed to enhance wellbeing, dignity, and engagement among residents. All outings and activities are linked to monthly dignity themes, ensuring experiences remain meaningful and purposeful.
Residents at Silvanna Court are supported to take part in activities that go beyond expectations, including cycling, ice skating, and rock climbing, empowering individuals to continue enjoying fulfilling and enriching experiences regardless of their diagnosis.
Understanding the importance of inclusion for all residents, Deby and Leah also ensure meaningful engagement for those who remain in bed, creating personalised boards for each resident to encourage connection, comfort, and conversation.
To further support staff knowledge and confidence, dementia care handouts are available on every floor, while monthly information packs are distributed during staff meetings. Their visibility and accessibility as Dementia Champions are reinforced through posters displayed around the home and badges worn by both champions, helping residents, relatives, and staff identify them as key points of support.
Silvanna Court has also developed a dedicated sensory and relaxation room, providing residents with a calm, safe environment designed to promote comfort, relaxation, and emotional wellbeing. These positive initiatives have already resulted in noticeable improvements within the home, with residents benefiting from increased engagement, enhanced wellbeing, and more personalised support.
The Runwood Homes Group praised the work of Deby and Leah, recognising their passion and commitment to continually improving the lives of people living with dementia and inspiring those around them.
