Humfrey Lodge Care Home, part of the Runwood Homes Group, has proudly been awarded second place in the Runwood Homes Group Dementia Champion Competition 2026, launched in celebration of Dementia Action Week.
The recognition celebrates the home’s dedication to delivering compassionate, person-led support for people living with dementia, while creating an inclusive and engaging environment for residents, relatives, and staff.
Humfrey Lodge’s entry highlighted a wide range of meaningful initiatives designed to promote wellbeing, independence, and community connection. Regular minibus trips enable residents to remain actively engaged with the local community, supporting social interaction and helping residents continue enjoying familiar experiences outside the home.
Residents are also supported to participate in cooking sessions, promoting teamwork, confidence, and meaningful engagement, while painting workshops provide creative opportunities that help lift mood and encourage self-expression.
A standout feature of the home’s approach is its Resident Ambassador initiative. Resident Malcolm, affectionately known as the home’s “Home Buddy,” plays a key role in welcoming new residents, helping them settle into life at Humfrey Lodge, and offering feedback to the home’s management team on behalf of residents.
The home’s commitment to personalised care was also recognised through examples of staff going above and beyond to meet individual needs, including learning key phrases in different languages to better support residents and improve communication.
To promote ongoing learning and awareness, Humfrey Lodge has introduced a dementia awareness folder within the staff room, alongside a dedicated dementia awareness board designed to provide information, resources, and guidance for both staff and visitors.
The environment within the home has also been carefully designed to support comfort, independence, and engagement. Residents benefit from welcoming spaces including an open courtyard, hair and beauty salon, Rose Café, and a dedicated music corner where residents can relax and connect through music and conversation.
The positive impact of these initiatives has been reflected through resident case studies and testimonials, with one resident sharing:
“I am very happy here, people are very helpful and supportive.”
The Runwood Homes Group praised Humfrey Lodge for its innovative and compassionate approach to dementia care, recognising the home’s commitment to creating meaningful experiences and improving quality of life for residents every day.
