At Fernhill House Care Home, this philosophy has recently come to life through the complete refurbishment of the home’s dementia floor.

The redesign was guided by a clear ambition: to create spaces that feel warm, welcoming and truly homely, while supporting independence, social connection and personal wellbeing.

At the heart of the floor is a beautifully designed brasserie, a relaxed and sociable setting where residents can enjoy coffee, conversation and time with family and friends. Nearby, a luxurious spa bathroom provides a calm and therapeutic space designed to make bathing a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Residents can also enjoy the piano lounge, where music and shared moments bring people together, and a dedicated hobby room, offering opportunities to pursue interests, crafts and activities that bring joy and purpose. Throughout the floor, a series of thoughtfully designed lounges create both lively spaces for activities and quieter corners for reflection and relaxation.

Every detail of the refurbishment was guided by one important principle: these spaces should be lived in and loved by residents, not simply admired for their design. The aim was to create environments that genuinely enhance daily life.

The feedback from residents and families reflects the warmth and sense of belonging that the new spaces have helped to create.

One family member shared: “Family is the most important thing to my husband, and it was lovely at the weekend when our family came to have afternoon tea with us and then spend a couple of hours in one of the beautiful lounges with the grandchildren playing board games. It really is a home from home.”

Another commented: “Mum’s wing was recently renovated and it’s just beautiful. She loves sitting by the ‘fire’ in the refurbished lounge. Mum settled in really quickly and whenever I call in I find her content and enjoying herself – it’s truly a delightful home.”

And perhaps most touchingly: “Going to Fernhill House is like being wrapped in a cosy blanket. From the moment you are greeted at the door you feel completely loved and cosseted.”
