Reviews

9.5 Fernhill House Care Home has a Review Score of 9.5 (9.518)

The Review Score of 9.5 (maximum of 10) for Fernhill House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 5 out of 5 from 7 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Fernhill House Care Home in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.5 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.988 for Fernhill House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (81 Excellents x 5) + (1 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 82 Ratings = 4.988

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 4.53 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Fernhill House Care Home is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 13.2 positive Reviews (66 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 7 Reviews ÷ 13.2 Target = 0.530

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

Fabulous home with wonderful, friendly staff and management. Everyone at the home works so very hard to meet my Dad's needs, who has dementia and has settled really well. The Oscar night was a triumph and was enjoyed by all. My family celebrated dad's birthday in September which we all enjoyed. Roast lunch was lovely along with an amazing Birthday cake compliments to the chef and kitchen staff, the food is always first class.

Thank you so much Jackie, your comments are really appreciated by all our team!

My mother's needs could not be met by the home where she was previously and so she came to Fernhill House Care Home.
I have seen a marked change in her. She is brighter, cleaner and happier. She is extremely well-fed and her daily sherry is much enjoyed too!
She loves her daily jacuzzi or shower and she is clean and her hair is always tidy.
Staff are professional, kind and patient - nothing seems to be too much trouble for them.
It is a pleasure to visit - you can't say that about many care homes. When you enter, the place smells good and looks good. This is how all homes should be - older people need to be able to live as they were accustomed.

The only downside is that at the moment there are few residents because it is so new. It feels somewhat empty and there is a lack of activities for Mum. She was used to a weekly keep fit class, quizzes and musical entertainment. I do understand that this is not easy with so few residents and I look forward to the time when more rooms are occupied!

Hi Christine,
Thank you so much for your lovely review. Our team love to hear positive feedback. I know we spoke this morning but just to confirm, you probably missed our lovely keep fit volunteer from mum's move-in to the time of review. Our volunteer does an exercise class once a fortnight. We have our therapist who has just returned from holiday who is in for 3 hours every Tuesday afternoon to do reiki, massage and sound therapy which is a very holistic approach. We also have a fantastic keep fit lady starting with us every Monday afternoon who will do keep-fit for a range of mobility. We do have a wide range of musical entertainment from external musicians and our team also do karaoke and sing-alongs. We will look at quizzes now your mum has moved in and enjoys them - we like our activity programme to be resident led. I hope you can come to our residents and family meeting on the 14th to contribute more suggestions that we can try, to gauge what is liked or otherwise.

It is comforting to know that my father is being looked after in such a caring environment by well-trained staff. The building, rooms, gardens and facilities are well designed. Bedrooms with patios are an added bonus. Menus are excellent and full of variety.

Thank you C very much for your lovely feedback. The team really appreciate it when positive comments are made.

I visited Fernhill House in July to see my friend. What an amazing home and nothing is too much trouble for anyone. I would love to move in myself - with a view of the lovely gardens. I will definitely recommend to all my friends and family. I was too late to book in to see Gervase Phinn - but what a treat for those who live here.

Thank you so much, Joan. It is a pity you were not able to see Gervase, he was so popular we may have to invite him again!

I visited Fernhill in July 2017. It exceeded my expectations of a Care Home for those wishing to enjoy living with exemplary care being offered in a beautiful setting. I stayed for lunch, which was of a very high standard with a range of options. I'm a few years away yet, but I know where I'd like to enjoy my later years.

Job Title: Dementia Lead

Description:

Paul Turvey joins the home from Age UK Hereford and Worcester where he was a Home from Hospital adviser and independent living administrator.
He has previously been a senior care assistant at another Worcestershire home, looking after the needs of people living with dementia, and a healthcare assistant at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.
Paul has undergone a wide range of professional training courses aimed at understanding the needs of residents with particular requirements.

He explained: “I allow myself to enter the world of the person with dementia, becoming part of their reality and I truly believe this helps me to deliver the best possible care I can.

“It is important to me that residents have choice, which I give them from the moment they wake up. My ethos is ‘always make a difference to someone’s day.’ It’s important to find out what makes our residents tick and to create activities based on their likes and interests, such as organising pet therapy, encouraging them to use a relaxing sensory room or picking herbs from the garden.

“The meal time experience is another opportunity to bond with residents, giving them the choice of what they would like to eat, allowing them to see and smell each meal separately and use plain brightly coloured plates to make it easier for them to see their food.

“Fernhill House is a happy, homely place, rooms are personalised, memory boxes are filled with favourite things, walls are decorated with art residents can relate to.”

Job Title: Home Manager

Description:

Peta Mandleberg is a registered nurse who has worked in the care sector since 1999.

She is passionate about ensuring older people actively enjoy later life and has a particular interest in enabling people living with dementia to be in control of how they live on a minute-by-minute basis.

Indeed, it is her all consuming passion to do things differently and avoid the ‘vanilla' offering of some care homes

Currently undertaking an MSc in Dementia Studies, she believes that vital though training is, working in a care home - or rather her vision of a care home - should be led by a passion for helping older people. Her policy for employing ‘wellbeing ambassadors' is ‘recruit for the heart, train for the brain'. She believes that a passionate heart can be trained - while someone else who ticks all the qualifications boxes but, without a genuine belief in what they are doing, will not help residents enjoy their lives to the utmost.

Peta's passion informs her approach and all her processes. With her degree in Business Administration, an HND in Business and Finance as well her RGN qualification, she is able to manage care in a business-like and organised manner.

She has more than 15 years' experience in senior managerial positions within the elderly care sector and has an extensive track record in commissioning homes, business development, compliance and business integrity.

Peta's role at Fernhill House involves commissioning and managing the home. Duties include the initial recruitment process, overseeing completion and functional design of the build and ensuring the home is equipped to help provide maximum enjoyment for both the 36-bed dementia community and for the 30 other elderly residents. Roles include appointing ‘wellbeing ambassadors', a hair stylist with experience of working with people with dementia and a chef devoted to healthy eating, choosing locally sourced food where possible and working with the residents in preparing and choosing dishes. The role also includes managing people, ensuring the safe operation of the home for the residents, meeting all statutory requirements from CQC and other agencies.

Those living in the dementia community have access to a secure sensory garden, their own pub, shop and potting shed.

Peta has two labradoodles who will regularly accompany her to work - giving residents the opportunity to enjoy some soothing pet therapy - again a proven stress reliever (for those who like dogs anyway!)
