Family members (residents) at Gibraltar Nursing Home in Monmouthshire recently enjoyed a Wimbledon-themed afternoon, complete with games, refreshments, and of course, strawberries and ice cream. Family members and team members who chose to take part came together in the home's Pillars restaurant, which had been decorated in classic Wimbledon green and white. Team members fully embraced the theme too, dressing in white polo shirts, shorts, caps and sweatbands. For the tennis-inspired games, there were tennis racquets and soft balls, along with badminton racquets and shuttlecocks. A table tennis table was set up on one of the dining tables, while a makeshift tennis net was created by wrapping crepe paper between two chairs, stretching right across the dining room. Family members lined up on one side of the net, either standing or seated depending on what was most comfortable and served balls across it. Team members also threw balls for people to return over the net. Win, 91 years young, showed some impressive tennis skills, managing to return almost every ball that came her way! Jason was equally enthusiastic about the games, although by the end he had earned himself a reputation as the biggest cheat! He was not at all bothered by this and laughed when people jokingly pointed it out to him. The games were a great opportunity to bring family members from different households across the home together to get active and a little competitive, practice their hand-eye coordination and enjoy plenty of laughter. Two of the gentlemen who took part are particularly interested in Wimbledon and enjoy watching the tournament on television. They had a great time soaking up the atmosphere, sitting amongst the fun with a glass of lager in hand. Team member Tracy said: ‘It was so lovely to see the family members who chose to get involved enjoying the afternoon, whether they wanted to join in with the games or simply relax with a drink and some strawberries and ice cream.’ Gibraltar Nursing Home is a residential and nursing home in Monmouthshire, South Wales, offering 24-hour care in a homely environment.
