WINNERS AT CHALFONT LODGE!

We did it everyone, we won the Barchester ‘Bake a Cake fit for The Queen’ competition for the South Division!

“We had 26 entries for the competition from the South Division and all were extremely difficult to choose from, the entry that pipped to the post was one that fulfilled all the judging criteria. The cake was a lemon, elderflower and Victoria sponge cake, with a golden crown, golden fruit and golden corgis, alongside sugared red roses and Union Jack bunting!
The team at Chalfont said “We started off with a residents meeting to design what we thought our cake should look like. We had some amazing ideas such as; making a Windsor Castle cake, a corgi dog cake and a cake of the British Isles filled with icing roses, daffodils, clovers & thistles, but decided that it might be to too complicated.
We really wanted to make a cake that we thought the Queen would like. One of our residents, Betty, said ‘it should be a real showstopper’ and mentioned when she thinks of the Queen she thinks of roses & bunting. Tori, resident at Chalfont Lodge, said she always thinks about the Queen’s beautiful crown’.
The day before we assembled the cake we got to work on making a crown out of fondant and then painting it gold with lustre dust. We decorated the cake with fresh red roses from the garden, grown by our Maintenance Manager Darren, which we painted in egg whites, sugar and let it dry overnight. We also made golden fruit to have alongside our berries of blue and red to cascade down our tiered cake.”
