View Full Details of Milkwood House Care HomeHaving arrived at Milkwood feeling rather nervous and sad, I found the staff very friendly, supportive and encouraging. Many of them have almost become my friends I feel so relaxed with them. I am no longer nervous and feel very safe and at home in my room. Sometimes it takes a while to get used to different accents.
From the moment I first visited Milkwood 6 months ago, to assess it for my brother's care, I felt that he and I were among friends. The staff took time to talk about my brother's situation, show me round the home and introduce me to the team (not always true in other establishments I visited !) and when I explained that I was due to see half a dozen more homes I was assured: "You will know when you've found the right one." I left knowing that I had. My brother is comfortable and well cared for. He likes his own space and the staff understand and respect that but keep an unobtrusive eye on his needs nonetheless. They are patient and caring and appear to totally get his sense of humour. And Christmas lunch was 5-star !!
Mum has been in Milkwood House for 14months now and settled in well from day one. She has a lovely cosy room, with a few of her things from home. She is always encouraged to spend all her time in the lounge- I really value this, as she always has company, even if she is not able to chat much, it means there is always something going on to observe. The separate dining room with tables of 4, all laid out like a restaurant table makes residents' meal times special. Staff are very friendly to her.
My mum arrived at Milkwood House in late January. For the previous three years she had lived alone in sheltered accommodation. She had become very bored and depressed in her flat, really retreating into her shell. She had broken her wrist at Christmas and following a spell in hospital and respite care we decided that she required more care and support than she had been getting. Milkwood was one of three homes we were recommended to. Just reading the reviews showed Milkwood as being the outstanding one by a country mile. I turned up and was shown around by a member of staff and it was immediately clear that she loved her job. She explained that residents are referred to as family. 'We are all family here'. Since Mum arrived it has been like night and day. We have not seen her this happy for about the last five years. She is getting involved in activities often with a wonderful member off staff and is regularly on their Facebook page! Thank You to the manager and the team. Brilliant job all round!
Sadly our mother has dementia and it progressed to such a degree that she needed 24 hour care . My brother & I reviewed a number of care homes and Milkwood came out on top. This was for many reasons. The friendly environment suited our mother and seemed like a home from home .The carers came across as very committed and dedicated to the job they do. We were impressed with the standards of cleanliness and the facilities. The range of activities available to resident's is excellent .We know we made the right choice for our mom and would recommend Milkwood without any reservations.
My uncle , "the magician", spent the last year of his life in Milkwood. He was very happy there, in spite of his quickly increasing dementia ,and loved to entertain folks with his amazing card tricks. The staff were very always friendly and caring and I was always kept informed of what was going on . I was immensely impressed by the amount of different activities that went on at Millwood, even though my uncle couldn't always participate in them. Very sadly he passed away earlier this year but he couldn't have had better care anywhere. Thank you so much to the manager and your lovely team. I'm sure wherever his spirit is ,my uncle is still busy doing his card tricks!
I had my reservations of my dad coming to Milkwood as I had not heard good things however I went with it and gave them a try. To my surprise the manager and his team have always been very welcoming to me and my family and have done everything in their power to support my dad and his additional needs. I have watch my dad thrive since moving here as he is now engaged in conversations and activities. I miss my dad being at home but here is the next best thing.
My mother had been at Milkwood Care Home for several mothers now the care she is receiving is second to none the staff are absolutely amazing with her and we are kept up to date from the admin staff . Highly recommend.
We are a small team who provide extra support to an adult man living at Milkwood House Care Home, who has both physical and learning difficulties. The home is well run, friendly and well presented, with all the staff welcoming, approachable and well trained within their roles. On occasions our extra support creates more work for the management and care teams, but they are always willing to help. The home and gardens are maintained to a high standard which along with the high standard of care creates a bright, positive, stimulating and happy atmosphere. While the personal centred approach to all of its residents ensures dignity and respect for all.
Excellent service has been given to my dad since he has been in Milkwood. Dad is now mainly in bed but the staff regularly come and visit him. The staff are really kind and helpful to us when we visit.
Milkwood House Care Home is simply the best l have ever encountered and having worked in care and visited several none of the others come close. The management and staff are excellent and very helpful and friendly. I simply wouldn't want her in any other home. It's simply brilliant.
Dad was discharged from the hospital into the care of Milkwood House. I drove to meet him there and found him in the lounge enjoying tea and cake while listening to an entertainer singing the 'good old songs'. I could not have been happier for him. On subsequent visits, the atmosphere remains warm and friendly and the staff are great. Thank you.
I am so pleased my mumma is residing at Milkwood House, she is so well looked after and I wouldn't want her to live anywhere else. She has a lovely comfortable room and enjoys the meals which are catered for her diabetic needs. She also enjoys going out in the minibus for days out or a coffee morning. I thoroughly recommend it.
My father has gone into long-term care. He has now settled in and is looking well having put on weight. He has been in a respite room for some time now and we are waiting for a permanent room for him. This will be much better as he can have his own things in the room.
As a relative of two residents in Milkwood House Care Home, I have to say that the care taken by the staff to ensure the residents are happy, is second to none. There are activities arranged for the residents who want to take part and days out too. The staff ensure that residents with special interests are accommodated - this results in much happiness and appreciation. I would highly recommend this home to families who are searching for a safe and happy home for their nearest and dearest - I know how daunting this process can seem.
My dad moved to Milkwood after a few months in hospital, he was weak and very thin. Within weeks his spirits lifted, he put weight back on and was very happy. He made friends with the wonderful staff (and so did I) and really enjoyed his time there. He enjoyed the activities and even went to Bird World on a day trip. He sadly passed away in October 2023. During his final weeks, the staff were amazing and treated him with the utmost dignity, we couldn’t have asked for better care. He felt safe and we knew he was being extremely well looked after.
My father spent the last year of his life at Milkwood, he fought us hard not to go as he had a negative perception of care homes. He soon changed his mind, he loved the company, food, activities and most importantly the staff. My sister and I were always made welcome when we visited. My only regret was that we could not persuade him earlier to go but we can be thankful that his last year and days were spent in a place full of life.
All the staff at Milkwood House Care Home were amazing. When my mother passed away, they were supportive and understanding and went above and beyond to look after my father, who has been left alone (both parents were residents at the home). They kindly offered to hold my mother's wake in the garden at the home and the chef provided an unbelievably generous spread of food. Management and the team have showed myself, my sister and my dad so much love and support which has helped us all through our grief.
The quality of Mum’s care improved significantly upon moving into Milkwood. I found the staff very caring, respectful, and enthusiastic about looking after the residents. Mum became happy again. She was extremely well looked after, and I believe the staff extended her life as a result. Sadly Mum passed away recently. Whilst I was unable to be present at her death, I am comforted that Mum died surrounded by her friends, the carers. I feel content that she was well looked after and passed away in happy and caring surroundings. I highly recommend Milkwood. Extremely well managed, great carers, excellent entertainment, good food, very clean, and no smells. Faultless.
We are delighted that we have been able to move our dear 93 year old Mum from Cornwall to Milkwood House Care Home. She has settled in quickly and enjoys joining in with a varied programme of activities. Staff are always on hand and so helpful when discussing care plans which are transparent and detailed. My son came down from London to see his Nanna and had fun joining in with the Hoy Bingo and the Karaoke. He sat in the dining room and was given tea and biscuits and watched wide-eyed at how brilliant staff members are with all residents. Mum loves having her hair and nails done regularly in the salon and she looks great. She always says how well she is being looked after. The managers and financial administrator have me given the clearest information I have received to date on what can often be a daunting situation as far as finances are concerned. Milkwood House is outstanding, not only for the very high standard of care provided but for the large variety of activities and outings they do.
