View full details of Barchester South Chowdene Care HomeI arrived at South Chowdene unanounced whilst looking for a care-home for my mam, who has advanced dementia. Straight away I was impressed with the welcoming feel, cleanliness and friendly staff. My mam has been there now for a couple of months and she seems very happy. She is nursed in bed, and the carers and nurses have a lovely manner with her. She is treated with dignity and is very well fed. She really enjoys the meals! Overall, I am extremely pleased and grateful that Mam is so well cared for at South Chowdene. Thank you to the management team and all the staff.
Over the last few months, I feel there has been more stability in the day to day functioning of the home. I think a lot of this must be due to having new, efficient, effective and approachable management in place. I think they have had a positive effect on the home. Added to this has been the recruitment of new staff who have been employed on a regular basis. I feel all the staff present in a friendly and welcoming way. I believe the morale of the staff has been lifted in what is a constantly challenging environment. Some of the work that the staff do, whether management, nurses, carers, domestic or kitchen staff will be excellent, but I rated the option as good, as most appropriate.
My uncle is well looked after. The staff are friendly and approchable at every visit. My uncle's needs are very well met and it gives us peace of mind.
The care home is outstanding. The staff are so caring, pleasant and helpful. I cannot fault any of the care my mother has received.
I am very pleased with how my sister is being looked after, she always seems happy, and also the staff are very friendly and always very approachable
My husband has been a resident for over a year now. In that time I have seen lots of improvements. He is well looked after by caring, friendly and experienced staff who have made him content and comfortable. The nursing care is excellent as is the food quality.
My mams transfer to Chowdene has been very smooth, she has been made to feel very welcome and has settled to life here very well. Any issues we had in the early days were dealt with very quickly. The staff are friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed.
I am very happy with mams care and have seen vast improvement of care home & lovely staff.
My sister-in-law has been in South Chowdene for 4 months now and is very well looked after. There is a good selection of food and dinning room, lounge areas are decorated beautifully. All staff are very caring and very welcoming when we visit.
My mother came here 99 years old and in poor health with no mobility. However; now she is 103 and is floroushing and can walk with a zimmer frame. The family are more than satisfied with her care and mother is happy here. Thanks for all you do for my mother.
I felt my mothers review was very thorough. the nurse explained everything to us in detail and when we asked questions she took the time to make sure we understood.
I discussed this with my mother before I completed it. She is very happy at Chowdene and the staff are all lovely and caring. However, she misses the interaction she had with Nicky's activities. Hopefully these activities will resume soon. I cannot complain about the staff at all but there seems to be a high turnover of staff meaning agency staff are used and don't know the residents as well as the longerserving staff.

My dad has been a resident for almost three years until his recent death, November 2024. They made my dad's time so much more bearable and enjoyable. Wonderful staff. Very caring, helpful and supportive. A smaller home which gave it a more homely feel and everyone there certainly made my dad smile every day. Thank you.
Our friend seems to be being looked after very well. Regular activities for her to take part in. Well fed and clean! Hair done regularly. I can call in any time and always made welcome.
I moved from another home to Barchester South Chowdene Care Home approximately five weeks ago, I had a lovely room on the first floor. I was really reluctant about using the lift so when a room became available on the ground floor, the staff went out of their way to move me downstairs. I was totally overwhelmed and shed a few tears, I can now go straight from my room straight along to the dining room, cafe area and also reception. I cannot thank all the staff enough. I am truly privileged to call South Chowdene my home, nothing is a bother, one beautiful, happy family.
I have been visiting Barchester South Chowdene Care Home for over twelve years and have always felt a warm welcome. Just recently, a lovely friend of mine chose to come here for "end-of-life care", her mother had been in care twelve years ago and was so pleased to get the last room. The love and care she was given was exceptional, we, as visitors, were treated with the same warmth. The staff work together in harmony, always smiling, cheering us up when we felt down, endless offers of refreshments, a hug when needed, laughter and jokes to cheer my friend and us up. Having spent a lot of time during my friend's last weeks, I cannot thank them enough. When she sadly died, we were given more hugs and so much love. Thank you is not enough. I will still be visiting as I have two friends still in their care.
I have expressed my thoughts on this home to family since my Grandma was admitted in Dec. I’ve put off leaving a review in the hopes that improvements would be made. But when my Mum called the home this week (Grandma is in hospital due to severe dehydration) and she wasn’t even asked how she was I find absolutely shocking. On several occasions, we have spoken about how Grandma is constantly in her wheelchair and that we’d like her to be in a comfy chair when downstairs. This was initially addressed but then quickly back to being left in the wheelchair. She’s had weight loss, meds errors, and on one occasion she slept in her jumper from the day before and knickers. We complained to the agency nurse who told us she’d been half-dressed in case she needed personal care which was utter nonsense. On numerous occasions, one of us has asked for her to go to bed then hours later when another relative visits she’s still downstairs sleeping in her wheelchair. Sadly I would not recommend.
My husband has recently moved from his previous care home to South Chowdene Care Home. As a family, we have never felt happier regarding the care my husband receives. My husband is very content and settled. He praises the carers and all the Chowdene team are fantastic, they are all very approachable and are very good at listening. He is in permanent nursing care and all his needs are being met I know he is in a happy caring place. All credit to every member of staff, keep up the good work and thank you so much.
My mother went into South Chowdene in October 2020 as an assessment bed and due to failing health, she became a permanent resident. Sadly she died in South Chowdene on 25th September 2022. During her 2 years in South Chowdene, she was always treated with respect and kindness by all the team. She could be difficult at times but every team member was always great with her and knew how to meet her needs. My mother particularly bonded with the carers who kept her going and she loved a joke with them. May I take this opportunity to also thank a previous home manager, who was fantastic and very approachable, I was so sorry when she left. My dad also died in South Chowdene in June 2015 so I had no qualms about my mother going there when she had to. The team in South Chowdene are a fantastic team whatever their grade or role and Barchester should be proud of them.
