Mam has been a resident of Chowdene since 2020. She has always been well looked after, having all her physical and social needs catered for. More importantly she has always been happy, mainly due to the friendly and professional staff. This professional approach also extends to our family, who visit
on a regular basis.

Over the last week our mother Greta has deteriorated so significantly that end of life care needed to be put into place. The whole team at South Chowdene, both day and night staff have provided an exceptional level of care for Greta. They have also supported our family in a most professional and caring
way. We would like to praise and give great credit to Anca who in a relatively short period of time, has put her ethos and vision into place and improved all aspects of the care home substantially. The staff work together much better as a team. Anca is very well supported by Iuliana and Jilt who are key members of staff.

During my mum's 10 month residential care at the care home, it has been a happy, content, stay for her, all of her carers have looked after her and her needs day in day out. I arrived at South Chowdene unanounced whilst looking for a care-home for my mam, who has advanced dementia. Straight away I was impressed with the welcoming feel, cleanliness and friendly staff.
My mam has been there now for a couple of months and she seems very happy. She is nursed in bed, and the
carers and nurses have a lovely manner with her. She is treated with dignity and is very well fed. She really enjoys the meals!
Overall, I am extremely pleased and grateful that Mam is so well cared for at South Chowdene. Thank you to the management team and all the staff.

I discussed this with my mother before I completed it. She is very happy at Chowdene and the staff are all lovely and caring. However, she misses the interaction she had with Nicky's activities. Hopefully these activities will resume soon.
I cannot complain about the staff at all but there seems to
be a high turnover of staff meaning agency staff are used and don't know the residents as well as the longerserving staff.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.774)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.774) out of 10 for Barchester South Chowdene Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 26 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 25 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.774 for Barchester South Chowdene Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (254 Excellents x 5) + (38 Goods x 4) + (8 Satisfactorys x 3) + (5 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 305 Ratings = 4.774
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester South Chowdene Care Home is based on 25 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 42 registered maximum number of service users is 8.4, which has been reached with 25 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Hi, my name is Anca, and I am the General Manager here at South Chowdene.

I am a dedicated Registered General Nurse with over 10 years of experience in the adult social care sector, specialising in nursing, dementia, mental health, acquired brain injury and complex care. Throughout my career, I have held leadership roles, including Deputy Manager and Home Manager, in the South West and North East of England, where I focused on creating safe, person-centred environments where residents feel valued and families have trust and confidence in the care provided.

I am passionate about developing strong, supportive teams and ensuring high standards of clinical practice, compliance and safeguarding.

As General Manager at South Chowdene, my goal is to lead a home where residents are proud to live, staff feel supported to grow, and families have peace of mind knowing their loved ones are cared for with dignity, respect and compassion.

I am a registered nurse with over 11 years of experience. I joined the team back in May after achieving my level five certificate in management.

Previously, I worked as a Clinical Lead Nurse for ten years for a different company, which I loved. My team were wonderful, but they closed the nursing unit, and I wanted to continue to use all my valuable nursing and management skills.

My role is to ensure all residents, families, and others are happy and are treated with dignity and respect. I am very friendly and enjoy responsibility. I also enjoy spending time with the residents and their relatives, building strong personal relationships with them.
