We were involved with The Ferns for 3 years as a very good friend of ours was being cared for there by your excellent team.
So, when my 90 year old brother was in need of more care, The Ferns was the obvious place for him to come too.
We would never have any hesitation in recommending The Ferns to
anyone looking for a care home
The whole building has been so thoughtfully designed in every way and has such a homely feel.
The staff are always so kind and friendly and visitors are always made to feel welcome at any time of the day. 10/10 all round

Up front we should recognise that no care home is perfect, given the ratios of staff to residents who often have complex needs.Residents in any care home cannot always have their physical or emotional needs attended to immediately and this is true of the Fernes too. With that said, there are many
reasons why the Fernes is an outstanding care home.
1) The leadership is competent, accessible, responsive, and relatable. In particular the current CEO is a great leader - she goes above and beyond to help residents and their families, knows all the residents personally, meets with them frequently, and the staff appear to admire and support her.
2) There is very little staff turnover. This is important for relationship building and understand of individual needs. Almost without exception the staff are competent and caring. I visit every day and they care about me too.
3) The facilities are lovely - many dining rooms, lounge areas, lovely gardens, and a wide range of engaging activities.

I have had both my parents as residents in The Fernes. My mother was on memory lane for 18 months and passed away at the end of January. The respect with which she was treated was second to none.
It would be naive to assume that care is 100 percent perfect, but I genuinely do not think we could
have found a better home, and without someone sitting with mum 24 hours a day, there could not have been more done to allay her anxiety.
The activities to engage with residents are so varied - mum was not very sociable with her dementia but enjoyed table tennis from her wheelchair, giant connect four and made use of the garden. Visits from children's choirs were a highlight for her.
When mum deteriorated in her last days the staff could not have been more considerate with us as family as well as with my mother.
Dad is now a resident and whilst primarily bed bound he enjoys the interaction with all the staff, the smiles, the jokes, the "dropping in". The laughter sustains him.

Overall I am very happy with the care. Staff are always cheerful and lovely. I do however think that there is a lack of staff. Which considering the fees and imminent increase, feel this is not really acceptable.

My father was only resident for 3 months before sadly passing away. However, I cherish the time he had in The Fernes because he thrived there, gaining healthy weight (from the fabulous meals offered) and he thoroughly enjoyed the wide range of activities and entertainment provided. As a daily
visitor I was always impressed over the cleanliness of the home and the welcoming, caring and friendly attitude of the Staff. I cannot praise enough the care, dignity and compassion they showed my father in his final weeks and the extra attention this took. I was so pleased he passed in the lovely environment of The Fernes. I would thoroughly recommend The Fernes if you were considering a Care Home.

The Fernes has always been a friendly welcoming and caring environment for my mother. Staff always greet with a smile. I am always informed of anything of note when it comes to my mums care. The festive decorations are a treat to behold and I feel secure in the knowledge that my mum is well looked
after in a safe, caring environment by staff who know her very well.

It was heartbreaking when I was no longer able to look after my husband with Alzheimer's, and the decision was taken from me to move him into a care home.
We chose The Fernes, and I needn't have worried & can relax now, knowing he is being cared for by the most wonderful staff with empathy and
kindness.
I can't speak highly enough of Fernes. It is a smaller home, efficiently run by lovely, friendly people, with a happy & relaxed atmosphere. The food choice is excellent & there are varied and well-thought-out activities every day. It is a pleasure to visit.

My father had been a resident of The Fernes since July 2024. He settled in well and was very happy. The staff were very friendly and caring and Dad got on well with them all. As a regular visitor I was also very impressed as the home was always very clean and tidy and all the staff were very
welcoming. Sadly my father passed away on the 14th October 2025 but I can't praise the staff at The Fernes enough for the care, dignity and compassion that they gave Dad in his last five or six difficult weeks. These final weeks meant that he needed more attention and time from the staff and I was so pleased that he passed at The Fernes and not in hospital. Thanks.

I found the Fernes a lovely care home with plenty of parking. The management were welcoming and settled me in well. My room which included a nice size bathroom was comfortable with plenty of room to move around. All the staff were caring and kind. The food on the whole was very good with varied
menus each day. It was pleasing to be able to use the garden at the rear especially when my family visited, and they were always made welcome by the staff.

Mum stayed at The Fernes for two weeks to let her arm recover after a fall. With very short notice the manager was able to find her a room and made her very welcome. As a family we are very grateful in her accommodating all the staff are.

The Fernes has provided a wonderful new home for my mother. The staff are caring, supportive and all are very helpful with wonderful smiles. The environment is small enough to provide a really homely feeling but it also provides spacious bedrooms, a welcoming coffee area and a beautiful dining room
which leads into wonderful gardens. All in all a home I can really recommend.

We cannot fault the Fernes, wonderful clean environment, lots of activities to be involved in if wanted. Food is delicious served in a lovely environment.
Tea/coffee + cake facilities for family is extremely welcome and the fact that dogs can visit is very important to us.

I have had a really good experience at The Fernes. Everyone has been incredibly kind and caring, always ready to go the extra mile with a quick response to the buzzer. The facilities are excellent, the room was well appointed and kept very clean with a comfortable bed. The quality of the food good,
well cooked and presented and management of my gluten and fish allergies well catered for. The time of the evening meal is too early but is probably dictated by staffing demands. The glass water jug supplied to the bedrooms is too heavy but a plastic one was supplied when asked. A huge thanks for filling in between hospital and second care home near family.

Having visited my sister, who stayed at The Fernes for a while, I already had a favourable opinion of the home. When I arrived, I immediately felt comfortable and welcome. The friendliness of the staff, always with a smile for me, helped me cope with the constant pain I experience for my right hip.
I had a day out with my daughter yesterday, and when I began to feel tired, I heard myself saying, 'I think I'd like to go home now'. That about sums it up.

Mum moved into Barchester The Fernes in January 2024, initially for respite care to get over a chest infection. She loved the company so much that she decided to stay! In August, Mum celebrated her 93rd birthday at The Fernes surrounded by her family and friends. The family are so pleased that Mum
has settled in so well. It is a huge relief to know that someone is caring for her 24/7! The staff are fantastic, the food is amazing and the activities are the highlight of Mum's day. Thank you to every single member of staff.

Really accomodating getting mum settled in. Lovely building, nice room. Guests treated well. Plenty of activities, meet the manager time, where you could find out about the manager's background and also ask any nagging questions. Staff really friendly and treat you like one of the family.
04 September 2024
Overall, we are very happy with the care and support Mum receives, we have had a few issues and these have been sorted out. The staff are excellent, very caring and affectionate with the residents, we are happy that Mum is in such a caring home. Food is excellent - Mum loves it. Our only
disappointment is the lack of activities for memory lane, it feels like they are left out, so disappointed with this aspect, not as advertised.
