Funding
Old age/elderly care homes consistently have the highest amount of self-funders (people who pay for their own care) than other types of care home.
In 2023, just under 50 per cent of residents in old age/elderly care homes were self-funders compared to 2 per cent of residents living in care homes for young adults.

Around 70 per cent of all care home residents have dementia or severe memory problems, according to the Alzheimer’s Society.
Using the care home population figure above, an estimated 309,035 people living in a residential or nursing home in the UK have some form of dementia.

Care home population forecast
Savills predicts UK will need an additional 144,000 care home beds over the next 10 years to keep pace with population growth.
Since 2020, around half of all new care homes have been built in London and in the south and east of England.
Only 15% of new care home beds have been built in Northern England.
Scotland and Wales have also seen fairly limited investment.
