The staff at Castlemaine Care Home work very hard & are respectful and caring towards the residents, however, it seems at some times (for example weekends) that there are insufficient staff to adequately deal with residents! The home management look to provide new interests for residents ef the chickens.

My mum stayed here on a respite basis. Many of the residents have quite extreme needs, and the staff cope well with challenging behaviour. Staff always appeared to be kind to the residents. The fabric of the building is very much in need of some attention, and my mum's room was quite chilly, even in
late summer. The room was also quite small, but serviceable in terms of furnishings and always seemed clean. Overall, the home seemed clean but often smelled unpleasant. The garden is very uninspiring and could be made much nicer at low cost. The food seemed good and varied. We had to raise with them that some of mum's personal care needs were not being sufficiently met (not regular enough hair washing, for example). I wasn't really aware of much in terms of activities, although there is a television in the lounge area, and the seating is arranged to encourage small groups to socialise. The home is very safe, with entry and exit points requiring number pad entry to pass through.

Hi, I have manged to speak to the home manager just now to discuss points raised above. We take all comments received seriously and at the same time try to find out what actually did happen whilst your Mum was under our care. I have read her care notes, mum was an independent person and was a very proud women who enjoyed taking care of her care needs privately. On some occasions, she did ask for help from Staff and she was always offered necessary support. Your dad, who visited her regularly at least twice a week who had no concerns for his wife whilst she was in our care. I am led to believe that you were not a frequent visitor. We have photographs where mum enjoyed taking part in all our daily activities offered and she particularly enjoyed sitting in our garden with your father. Rooms are left for the family members to make them personalised and I can imagine that this would be very difficult for a short term respite service user. We will learn from your review. Thanks.

Anyone looking to place a loved one into care please steer well clear of this dreadful home, all rooms are shabby communal areas are cold and the unwelcoming manager is less than caring. There is a total lack of funding from the owners which is reflected in the home's appearance, obviously only interested
in lining their own pockets. Staff cannot be retained, one admitting to being embarrassed to let the resident's relations enter the building. Overall a quite horrendous experience. Please see the current CQC report if you are considering homing a loved one here it's very damning.
Reply from Prash Patel, Director at Castlemaine Care Home

Hi Rob, we are sorry to hear about your experience at Castlemaine. Reading the review, we are surprised considering these concerns have only been raised recently with your loved one being placed with us, almost one year ago. Your concerns were raised to the relevant authorities and our manager has responded accordingly to their satisfaction. We are also aware this placement was at risk due to consistent non-compliance with payments. As you are aware there is an open case around the collection of service charges, which is being dealt with via the legal process. We wish you all the best for the future and hope the new placement is satisfactory based on your expectations.

Current Review Score: 7.4 (7.413)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 7.4 (7.413) out of 10 for Castlemaine Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 3.8 out of 5 from 6 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.6 out of 5 from 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 3.806 for Castlemaine Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (21 Excellents x 5) + (19 Goods x 4) + (21 Satisfactorys x 3) + (5 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 67 Ratings = 3.806
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 3.607 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Castlemaine Care Home is based on 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.25
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 42 registered maximum number of service users is 8.4. 3 Positive Reviews ÷ 8.4 = 0.357
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
