  • Corton House, Norwich
Corton House is a 42-bed residential care home for older people, situated close to Norwich city centre but enjoying the leafy surroundings of mature walled gardens and with a variety of bright and comfortable communal rooms.

The home was established 70 years ago, among the first purpose-built care homes for older people in the UK, and still operates as a not for profit today: in care for the right reasons and built upon the Christian ethos of community and kindness. Although regular worship and pastoral services are available from the dedicated Chaplain, the home is open to people of any faith or none.

Hailed as a pioneer in social care back in 1952, Corton House continues to stand for innovation today, with its progressive approach to residents’ wellbeing. One of the cornerstones of this is the home’s holistic activities programme, offering something beyond the standard knitting and board games – although there is plenty of time for those too!

Corton House regularly partners with specialist arts and cultural providers, and has strong community links with local schools, businesses and charities allowing plenty of opportunity to socialise and learn something new. Recent examples include British Sign Language taster lessons, clay sculpture making inspired by local wildlife, natural ink making and collaborative poetry writing with a local school.

There is no 'one size fits all' approach to care at Corton House, each resident is treated as an individual and supported to make their own choices, from where they take their meals right down to how they like their perfect cup of tea. Meals are freshly cooked using local ingredients where possible, with all dietary requirements catered for. Residents can enjoy an ever-changing variety of delicious meals, as well as access to snacks and drinks all day long. The kitchens have a 5* food hygiene rating (last inspection, May 2024).

What an amazing place and the biggest reason for that is the staff. They are incredible. Great kindness and caring I have seen every time I'm visiting mum. They treat the people who live here like family.. and it feels like home. It's so lovely to know mum has people like this looking after her. I have
never worried about her since she's been living here.. I know she's safe and loved. This is a happy place.. there is an air of it as soon as you come in.. there's always something happening to take part in.. musical.. artistic.. fitness based. The food is home cooked.. and from veg grown by the people who live here. It's a lovely environment.. very clean and fresh and stylishly decorated.. and the gardens are just lovely.. mum and I enjoy sitting in the summerhouse and checking on the veg garden. Mum is happy.. she's made lots of new friends and has found her confidence again with the gentle encouragement of everyone there. I can't thank them enough.. I feel we have mum back again.

Every experience I've had in relation to my mother's care or personal observation has been excellent. The staff are professional, attentive and caring. When necessary the home has always connected me promptly and engaged me in decisions regards my mother's care.
The home has a great activity schedule
and my mother really enjoys the mix of activities.
The food is great, my mother enjoys it a little too much, she has definitely put on weight since moving in.
Personally, the key difference between Corton House and another home I have experience of, is the staff, they appear to really care about the residents, there is continuity of care and a desire to make the residents feel they are "home" and looked after.

Oh my goodness, what a place. We were nervous about mum going into Corton, she had just lost her husband and was anxious, withdrawn, had not been communicating well in assisted living and had withdrawn socially and was very quiet. In the 3 months since being at Corton, mum has adapted so well and enjoyed
the numerous activities, music, games that get put on. Shes been getting regular baths from caring workers and the atmosphere of Corton is so friendly, upbeat and positive. She is growing potatoes, singing, enjoying big bands, knitting and re-engaging with people. Its difficult to recognise the mum we see now compared with previous. she is so much more chatty, her dementia has improved immensely with communication, interaction, regular meds and activities she is so happy and so are we. Thank you Corton for making this so much more than just a care home, you go one step beyond and we can keep up with all the excitement on social media with pics of events.

From the moment we walked into the care home we were greeted with warm friendly staff who always said hello with a smile. It puts you at ease straight away knowing you have picked the right place for your relative. The home is always clean and tidy and has a very modern feel to it. Plenty of places
for people to sit and chat to others which is great as you dont want to think your relative is only in their room all day. Lots to do. We hear that it has been lovely for our relative to join in so many activities throughout the week. We have been really happy with the support and care shown to our loved one but staff are always there for us too when we have asked for any guidance. Its nice to know when you leave after a visit your relative is in good hands. Takes away alot of stress wondering if theyre okay. Thank you Corton for your 5 star service.

A friendly, caring atmosphere met us when we were looking for care for our Mum. Corton House is smart and clean and staff clearly enjoy their demanding work. We are very appreciative of the care Mum is receiving, giving us peace of mind that she is safe and secure. The gardens are a wonderful space,
Mum enjoys being able to sit outside when possible. She enjoys the many and varied activities laid on by the team.

To each and everyone at Corton House, thank you all so much for caring, loving and looking after my Mum. You all made Mum's just short of two years with you very enjoyable. She felt loved, found friendship and enjoyed experiences that Mum would probably not have had. You gave Mum room to grow, express
herself and sprinkle her unique sparkle. We miss calling in because we found friends too.
Reply from Jason Parker, Registered Manager at Corton HouseThank you so much for your wonderful words about your Mum's time at Corton House. It was a joy to care for her and she is much missed by us all. Please still feel free to drop in and say hello!

I wanted to write to thank the staff at Corton House for going 'above and beyond' to help my Dad to settle in. I am sure that every family must find this a difficult time but the staff couldn't have been kinder in supporting both Dad and us. Everything from sorting his GP registration to getting his
pictures hung on his newly decorated walls and all his things arranged to his satisfaction. We get daily calls from Dad to tell us how good the food is. My Father knew some staff and residents at Corton House many years ago and the activities coordinator was kind enough to find the relevant photo albums from the archive so that he could look at all the familiar faces. Even the gardener has been in for a chat, which Dad loved. We so appreciate these details.

It certainly helps that the garden is delightful, and that the building has a lovely, freshly decorated, light and sunny feel about it. Thanks to all the staff and management.

Mum moved into Corton House in early April, following a fall in January & periods in hospital, rehabilitation & respite care in another home until her room was ready at Corton House.
The staff have been great, welcoming mum in & helping her get settled ok, and have also supported the family with answers
to numerous questions that come up about the smallest of things that you hadn't initially thought of.
Staff have helped mum with a sore leg & this is now healing nicely.

Mum has now been living in Corton House for 6 months. She has settled in well, is happy and feels safer than when living at home on her own. The staff are very friendly and as well as providing the necessary care are happy to help out with anything else she needs or would like assistance with. She enjoys
participating in the group activities, but also being able to relax quietly in her own room when she wishes. As her family, it's reassuring for us to know she now has 24 hour care in the lovely environment of Corton House.

Since living alone became too difficult for our Mum, Corton House has been the perfect place for her to move to. We are greeted with smiling faces on every visit and always feel welcome.
The whole team is kind, respectful and sensitive to individual needs. Nothing is too much trouble. Each week, there
is a varied, fantastic programme of activities, and it feels like a safe and happy environment, with warmth and care from the top filtering down.
Corton House is a light, comfortable, airy, spacious building with a lovely garden. There is a positive and fun atmosphere here, yet it is also very professional, with the latest technology for the resident's safety and comfort. We can not recommend Corton House more highly.

We feel really lucky that our mum lives at Corton House. She has dementia and is treated with the utmost respect and friendliness by everyone. She enjoys the activities although she may not remember doing them later and the variety and frequency of the activities is outstanding. Mum is reminded what
is happening and gets involved as a result. There are several areas where visitors and residents can sit and talk quite cosily, including a drinks machine for cappuccinos and chocolate in an area off the dining room overlooking a garden. The main garden is a lovely asset to the house and mum really enjoyed her walks around it this summer whenever weather allowed. There are also several areas in the garden where residents and guests can sit comfortably. The menus are varied every week and mum seems to enjoy going into breakfast, lunch and supper. She has periods of confusion but she is helped in a positive way. It is a safe and caring environment for her and seems to suit her very well.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.907)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.907) out of 10 for Corton House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 21 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.907 for Corton House is calculated as follows: ( (226 Excellents x 5) + (21 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 248 Ratings = 4.907
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Corton House is based on 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 44 registered maximum number of service users is 8.8, which has been reached with 21 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
