Hazelwell Lodge is a 50- bed care home with a highly experienced team specialising in supporting people living with dementia and mental health conditions.

Many bedrooms include en-suite facilities, Smart TVs and direct access to a secure enclosed garden. Residents are encouraged to personalise their rooms to create familiarity and a warm, homely environment.

The team promote independence wherever possible and offer a range of comfortable spaces for residents to enjoy, including several lounge areas, a summer house, a bar, a small manmade beach, and private gardens with peaceful water features.

The home is made up of three open units, giving residents the freedom to choose where they’d like to spend time. They may relax in the ‘Bay’ unit’s bar or large conservatory, enjoy the hair and beauty salon in the ‘Lilies’ unit, or spend time in the bright, open-plan ‘Orchids’ unit, which features a lounge and an activities room that doubles as a cinema and sensory (snoezelen) space.

To support physical and mental well being, a varied, person-centred activities programme is offered with a mixture of in-house sessions, outdoor pursuits and visiting entertainers.

The company firmly believes that a care home is only as good as its staff. At recruitment, team members are selected who share the homes values. Every member of staff treats residents with dignity and respect, following a fully person-centred approach at all times.

You are very welcome to visit whenever you wish the team look forward to welcoming you to Hazelwell Lodge.

Mum had advanced dementia when she went to Hazelwell Lodge in Ilminster. She had always fiercely asked not to be moved into a care home but her condition became so bad we had no choice. In my experience the staff at Hazelwell have been amazing. Mum can be very aggressive and abusive at times due
to the dementia but the staff know how to deal with her in a calm and non-confrontational way. They keep me updated of any changes and I can tell that they are very fond of her despite her behaviour! Many of them knew mum in better times so are particularly kind and patient with her which has made it much easier for us as a family.
Reply from Claire Kingdon, Registered Manager at Hazelwell LodgeThank you for your kind review. We know how hard it is when a loved one with advanced dementia needs fulltime care, and were glad you feel supported. Its wonderful to hear that our teams calm, patient approach has helped your mum settle, especially during challenging moments. Many staff knowing her from earlier times does make a difference, and theyll truly appreciate your kind words. Thank you for trusting us with her care.

Mum was a resident for 4.5 years + following a fall at home during the pandemic. The care she received throughout was fantastic. Staff turnover was low & communications between them were excellent; on arrival it was common for the greeting carer to know exactly where Mum was in the home, how well
(or not) she had slept & if she was eating/drinking well that day.Following the pandemic they were able to reinstate many of the regular visitors & activities they'd enjoyed pre-Covid & as Mum's dementia worsened, appropriate adjustments were made to ensure she had opportunity to join others for mealtimes & activities, but only if she wanted to.
Mum's end of life was handled with the utmost dignity by everyone involved, including domestic & maintenance staff & every effort was made by HL to ensure that her family were able to be with her at any time during her final days.We were so pleased that she was able to live there to the end & receive wonderful end of life care from those familiar to her
Reply from Claire Kingdon, Registered Manager at Hazelwell LodgeThank you so much for your kind review. We're grateful that your mum was with us for 4.5 years and that you felt she received fantastic care throughout. It means a lot to hear that our team's continuity, communication, and daily attention helped you feel reassured.
We're pleased the return of visitors and activities after the pandemic supported her wellbeing, and that the team were able to adapt sensitively as her dementia progressed.
Your words about her end-of-life care are especially appreciated. Ensuring dignity and giving families time together is so important to us, and we're glad you felt supported by everyone involved.
Thank you again, it was a privilege to care for mum.

My wife, suffering from Alzheimer's became a full time resident at Hazelwell Lodge in February 2020. She was initially combative with the staff and that was why she was moved to Hazelwell, the care home she was at before then could not successfully cope with her.
It was immediately apparent to me
that Hazelwell Lodge staff had the right mindset to cope with difficult residents. My wife settled down and unfortunately I was not able to see her when the pandemic was in full flow. 6 months later when I was able to see her in the open air I was so shocked to see how she had deteriorated I could not bear to see her and kept away for about a year. I then re-engaged and whilst I still find it hard visiting I have kept my promise to the family.
I have to say that the care home is numerically well staffed, which is important and all the staff I have contact with are very competent, friendly and accommodating. I really cannot fault the service that is given in the care home.
Reply from Claire Kingdon, Registered Manager at Hazelwell LodgeThank you so much for taking the time to share such a heartfelt review.
We appreciate you entrusting us with your wife's care. Supporting residents with complex needs, especially when they are feeling frightened or combative, is something our team takes very seriously, and it means a great deal to hear that you felt confident in our approach from the beginning.
The pandemic was an incredibly difficult time for families, and we completely understand how hard it must have been to see the changes in your wife after months apart. Your honesty about how emotional those visits were is touching, and we admire the strength it has taken for you to re-engage.
Thank you for your kind words about our staffing levels and team members. The whole team works hard to provide compassionate, person-centred care, and your recognition of their competence, friendliness, and dedication will mean so much to them.
We are truly grateful for your feedback. It is a privilege to care for your wife.

Mum was at the care setting for nearly 4 years and during that time received care to a very high standard.

As a family we were very satisfied Mum's complex care needs were met on an ongoing basis, this was down to the high quality of care team members and a very professionally run organisation.

Thank

you again to everyone at Hazelwell Lodge, in particular to Marie, Head of Care at the Lilies and her team for doing such a great job looking after Mum.

I have been really happy with the care my relative has received, the staff have taken time to understand his needs, likes, dislikes and his character. I have been kept informed of any issues/needs and medical changes.
I had the pleasure of joining him for Xmas dinner where I was very impressed with
both the quality and quantity of the food offered.
The staff are all very friendly and approachable and where I have had any queries or concerns they have been open and honest.
I feel comfortable when visiting in that i can make a cup of tea, talk to the residents and staff and have a laugh and joke, its a very relaxed homely atmosphere.
It would be great if there were a few more facilities/active activities available like a walking machine, indoor bike as some residents may benefit from these. Parking for visitors can be a challenge at times.

Hazelwell Lodge was amazing for my mum, she really improved under their care. The staff are so kind and caring and really go above and beyond for all the residents. Nothing is too much trouble and I liked that I was kept informed of how my mum was when she was ill or needed anything.
The food is really
good and nutritious, it's varied and mum enjoyed the two delicious roasts a week. The home has regular music entertainers to come in, which are very good. I can't recommend Hazelwell enough, they really are a special team.

My mum has been a resident at Hazelwell for 6 months now. She found the transition very difficult and needed a lot of support and the staff were nothing but kind and compassionate with her. We've been able to visit her at any time of night or day, without issue.
As a family we are secure in the knowledge
that in her twilight years our mum is well cared for and surrounded by nothing but kindness, compassion and support.

My Father has been a resident at Hazelwell for approximately six months. At first my brothers and I were quite concerned about how Dad would settle in and how well he would be cared for. I can honestly say, we had nothing to worry about, as he settled in and was made to feel at home immediately, and
has all the care and attention he could possibly need. We visit our father every few weeks and Dad is always very content, clean, well fed and has built great rapport with the care staff. We could not be happier with Hazelwell and all the staff.

My grandmother has been a resident at Hazelwell Lodge for several years and I couldn't be happier that she is cared for here. I go and visit her every few months when I'm in the area and she is always clean, content and well cared for. The staff are very kind, caring and professional, even when dealing
with very challenging residents and everyone is afforded great dignity and respect. The rooms are clean and there are lots of activities put on to keep residents engaged and entertained. My latest visits were around Christmas, and the decorations were simply beautiful. A big thank you to the staff for their exceptional hard work and the care and kindness they show to my grandmother.

My father-in-law was staying here for a year before he sadly passed away very recently. The care he recieved was of a very high standard. He really didn't want to go into a home but after just a few weeks he felt right at home. The staff are very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Various activities
meant there was something for everybody. We initially had a few issues with food as he was gluten-free and also on a soft food diet. But this was sorted very quickly and the staff spoke to us in depth about his dietary needs. Can't thank them enough for everything they did for him.

From the moment Dad entered the home his needs have been met. Everyone is so caring, kind, considerate and helpful. Putting Dad's wants/needs is very much the home's ethos. Despite Dad's challenges, especially his behaviour they have never complained, just continued to support him. There is a brilliant
programme of events and activities, tailored to everyone’s abilities. His room is well appointed with everything he needs and the whole home is bright, welcoming and still retains a homeliness. I would highly recommend Hazelwell to anyone looking for a care home for their loved one with dementia. They are the epitome of the word ‘care’.

My mum went to live at Hazelwell Lodge in November 2022 due to her dementia. Not an easy decision for me but her transition was seamless due to the professionalism of the staff. I have always found the staff to be caring and attentive to all aspects of Mum's well-being and are very approachable. Sadly,
Mum passed away at the beginning of April 2023. Her care and comfort were very well managed by the staff.

Mum went into the home 2 weeks before the 1st lockdown and we as a family were very worried how mum would cope, but the home ensured we had face time whenever we wanted to see and speak to mum this was so so good for us as well as mum. We were concerned that the home was not that local to us but we
should never have been as we have found that everyone at the home is one big family we couldn't of asked for better care and mum is very happy which is all we can ask for.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.570)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.570) out of 10 for Hazelwell Lodge is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 16 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.670 for Hazelwell Lodge is calculated as follows: ( (129 Excellents x 5) + (51 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 185 Ratings = 4.67
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Hazelwell Lodge is based on 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 50 registered maximum number of service users is 10, which has been reached with 16 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
