Hazelwell Lodge is a 50- bed care home with a highly experienced team specialising in supporting people living with dementia and mental health conditions.

Many bedrooms include en-suite facilities, Smart TVs and direct access to a secure enclosed garden. Residents are encouraged to personalise their rooms to create familiarity and a warm, homely environment.

The team promote independence wherever possible and offer a range of comfortable spaces for residents to enjoy, including several lounge areas, a summer house, a bar, a small manmade beach, and private gardens with peaceful water features.

The home is made up of three open units, giving residents the freedom to choose where they’d like to spend time. They may relax in the ‘Bay’ unit’s bar or large conservatory, enjoy the hair and beauty salon in the ‘Lilies’ unit, or spend time in the bright, open-plan ‘Orchids’ unit, which features a lounge and an activities room that doubles as a cinema and sensory (snoezelen) space.

To support physical and mental well being, a varied, person-centred activities programme is offered with a mixture of in-house sessions, outdoor pursuits and visiting entertainers.

The company firmly believes that a care home is only as good as its staff. At recruitment, team members are selected who share the homes values. Every member of staff treats residents with dignity and respect, following a fully person-centred approach at all times.

You are very welcome to visit whenever you wish the team look forward to welcoming you to Hazelwell Lodge.

My dad was a resident at Hazelwell Lodge from January – February 2022. He had two wounds develop in this time which were completely ill-managed and ended in an emergency hospital stay for iv antibiotics and sepsis which was completely missed and I had to chase. During this time I was sent invoices besides
not having a contract. The care home just seems far too big. Too many staff moving around with not enough knowledge/consistency to be able to understand and observe the individuals. I found out from the care notes I requested that the home also had scabies but had not told me, besides me taking my 12-month-old daughter into visit. It was noted that the district nurse had told them they should tell me. I also saw that my dad had accidentally locked himself in a bathroom, in a home of 50 people they struggle to find lost people and then could not find a key to open the door. Some individual staff members were lovely but they seemed to be let down from those above.
Reply from Chris Ochoa, Director at Hazelwell LodgeWe appreciate you bringing your experience to our attention.
At Hazelwell Lodge we pride ourselves in our care and commitment to our residents and their families.
In compliance with our home's complaints policy, a full investigation of the concerns was raised, and we identified and acknowledged that improvements within our team’s communication were required. In addition, we feel a more person-centred approach and timelier response from outside health care professionals to support, diagnose and treat may have also been beneficial in this situation.

To improve our services, we held staff meetings and supervisions to discuss the events, outcomes, and solutions. More robust policies and procedure have been reviewed and implemented along with additional training specific training to improve our lines of communication internally and externally.

Full and transparent records and reports following the investigation, were submitted to CQC and ASC and date there have been no compliance issues raised in this regard. Records and reports have been saved on their systems for information only.

We respect the right of opinion of the author with regards to the issues raised.
And we welcome genuine feedback of experiences, even if it may be uncomfortable, as we strive to continually improve the service we provide to our residents and their families.

My mother was admitted to Hazelwell Lodge in May 2016 with advanced Dementia. Sadly she passed away in March 2017. However, throughout her stay, we found all aspects of Hazelwell excellent.
The cleanliness of all areas, especially bathrooms, bedrooms etc...
Huge selection of entertainment and trips
for residents. The overwhelming feeling that the staff were treating my mother as a member of their own family, this gave me huge reassurances during her stay.

My mum moved into Hazelwell Lodge with extreme dementia and was also very unwell. All of the staff, management and owner were amazing. The care was definitely to the highest standard. Everyone was very kind, caring, sympathetic, knowledgeable and efficient no matter what their role.
We changed mums
room around, put up lots of photos etc (with help from the handyman) and made it her own, this was welcomed. We were there all day, every day and this was welcomed too and because of this, we got to know the staff, management and residents really well.
Sadly mum was so poorly, she was put on an end of life plan, again this was dealt with to the highest level. When mum passed away, the night staff were there with us and ensured that every need was met with support and sympathy.
Hazelwell treats residents as individuals. They recognise that this is their home and that different things make different people happy. Residents all receive the utmost respect and care and we are so grateful to everyone there.

My mum was admitted to Hazelwell Lodge toward the end of Nov 16. Shortly thereafter my mum was placed on end of life care. Sadly, mum passed away early Dec 16. Although her time at Hazelwell Lodge was not very long the staff and management at Hazelwell far exceeded my expectations. They went above and
beyond their duties. They, without exception, displayed professionalism, care and more importantly compassion. The staff and management at Hazelwell Lodge ensured my mum's last days were comfortable and she passed with the utmost dignity.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.570)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.570) out of 10 for Hazelwell Lodge is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 16 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.670 for Hazelwell Lodge is calculated as follows: ( (129 Excellents x 5) + (51 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 185 Ratings = 4.67
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Hazelwell Lodge is based on 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 50 registered maximum number of service users is 10, which has been reached with 16 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
