Hillgrove is an Edwardian house located in a quiet, exclusive residential area of Wirral overlooking Bidston Hill. It provides person-centred care for 23 male and female residents who have varying degrees of dementia. The home has just undergone a major refurbishment programme including a new roof, two new rooms, new wet rooms, reflooring a number of rooms, new furniture in the bedrooms. The sluice is undergoing renovation. There is a new patio area with new patio furniture, flowers shrubs and awnings. There is a new digital call bell system, which includes fall mats.

The home has a very good relationship with the local authority and Contracts Team who regularly inspect the home and have regular meetings.
The top floor now consists of two beautiful new bedrooms and have amazing views over to Wales.
There are two new wet rooms which were completed in July and August 2025.
There are 8 new windows recently installed in the home and room 18 now boasts a beautiful window to enhance what already is a lovely big bedroom. A number of beds have been replaced, and more beds on order. A new tumble dryer and a new washer are being installed for the laundry.
The residents have all commented on how nice the food is and the cook has been here for a number of years.

Hillgrove has consistently achieved a grade 5 from Environmental Health (most recently February 2025).The dining room is being redecorated and upgraded in August 2025. Lighting in lounges was upgraded in August 2025.
Following discussions with the Residents and Staff, the dining room has been relocated to what was the lounge, and the lounge is now in the front looking out at the garden. The first floor office is now a quiet lounge and has been refurbished with new chairs etc. There is new dining room furniture.

My aunt is still mobile and able to be taken out - which she enjoys doing. However she sometimes gets upset when being taken back again. The staff are lovely when I bring her back and open the door with a big welcome and make a fuss of her, bringing her in and settling her down. This makes it much easier
for me leaving her that I feel she is well cared for and as happy as she can be.
Reply from Sophie Tolley, Deputy Manager at HillgroveThank you so much for your lovely review.

We understand that returning can sometimes feel unsettling, so it means a lot to know that our team's warm welcome and reassurance help make that transition easier for both of you.

Our aim is always to create a comforting, supportive environment where residents feel safe, valued, and cared for. We're so glad you feel confident leaving your aunt with us and that she is as happy and settled as possible.

Your kind words will be shared with the team-they'll be truly appreciated.

Thank you again for your support.

Warm regards,
The Hillgrove Team

Can't thank Lisa and the team at Hillgrove enough for how they dealt with and treated my Dad. He was there from start of September '25 to end of February '26 and they became like a second family to him. They supported him through his dementia needs, were caring and attentive, and when we came over for
our regular visit to him, it was great to see how all the staff were with the residents and Dad, the atmosphere at the home was lovely and how friendly and welcoming the staff are. Dad did have his moments, and I was kept up to date with all that had been going on an gone on, always informed of what they are doing to help him and any decisions needed about further support for Dad, they were on the phone explaining things in a way that was understood but clearly acting with Dad's best interests at heart. Again, I cannot thank Lisa and the staff enough, I know Dad will miss them all. Thank you. (Stu)
Reply from Sophie Tolley, Deputy Manager at HillgroveThank you so much for your kind and heartfelt words. It truly means a great deal to all of us at Hillgrove.

It was a privilege to care for your Dad and to support him throughout his time with us. We're so pleased to hear that he felt comfortable and that our team were able to provide the care, understanding, and reassurance he needed, especially during challenging moments.

We always aim to create a warm, family-like environment, so it's lovely to know that both you and your Dad felt welcomed and supported. Keeping families informed and involved is very important to us, and we're glad you felt included and reassured throughout.

Your kind words will be shared with the whole team, who will be very touched. Your Dad will always be remembered fondly here at Hillgrove.

We wish you and your family all the very best, and thank you again for taking the time to share your experience.

Warmest regards,
The Hillgrove Team

My dad has settled into Hillgrove really well. He always looks clean and is shown at every visit. He tells me he is happy and well fed, he enjoys his food and says he is never hungry. The carers are all lovely and welcoming and interact with all residents. I am always kept up to date on my dad's health
and wellbeing.

Current Review Score: 8.6 (8.569)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.6 (8.569) out of 10 for Hillgrove is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 3 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.9 out of 5 from 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.667 for Hillgrove is calculated as follows: ( (26 Excellents x 5) + (8 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 36 Ratings = 4.667
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 3.902 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Hillgrove is based on 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.25
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 23 registered maximum number of service users is 4.6. 3 Positive Reviews ÷ 4.6 = 0.652
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
