  • Roselea House, Cowdenbeath
Holmes Care specialist dementia care home in Cowdenbeath featured as a finalist in the Scottish Care National Care Home Awards in November 2012. Having won the Dementia Service category in 2011, Roselea House was runner up at the Awards ceremony held on 23rd November 2012 at the Glasgow Hilton Hotel.

Roselea House has a large garden which some residents enjoy helping to keep tidy. Vegetables grown in the garden are used in the kitchen so that residents can enjoy their own produce.

Roselea House was runner up in the Care Home Design Award category at the May 2010 Awards.

The home opened in April 2010, having been converted to care specifically for residents with dementia type illnesses. It is considered to be at the forefront of dementia care provision. Roselea House has 20 large single occupancy rooms, all en-suite with showers, in a single storey building.

During the planning of the refurbishment, advice was taken from Stirling University Dementia Services Development Centre and incorporated into the interior design features to provide solutions for people with dementia. Some of the features are:

-Dementia signposting, including 3D tactile signposting.
-Individual memory boxes on bedroom doors.
-3D tactile memory murals.
-Non-intrusive call bell system with sensory activated lighting in bedrooms.

The principal aim was to provide a care home with a real family atmosphere for all residents, while maintaining respect for their privacy, individual rights, independence and freedom of choice.

All staff undergo specialist training delivered by Holmes Care – Holmes Care own training division in order to provide sensitive and appropriate care. Using a person-centred approach, based on leading theory in current dementia care practice, residents will receive a high level of attention and supervision based on their individual needs and wishes.

Roselea is a warm and welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike. The staff are always attentive, kind and compassionate. Mum settled in very quickly when she moved in 2 years ago. Anyone who visits mum comments positively on the size of her room and how nice the home is. We are kept informed
about mum's welfare, and any issues are always dealt with quickly. We are confident that mum is safe and well cared for at Roselea, can't ask for anything more in the face of how awful the disease dementia is.

Due to health issues I have been unable to visit my husband as often as usual. But, staff, including domestic and kitchen, have gone out of their way to assure me that he is quite settled and they are keeping "an eye" on him. Especially as he has been, temporarily moved into another room. As urgent
repairs were req'd in his. It is very reassuring to me that this level of care is normal for the staff in Roselea. To give to all residents choosing Roselead has been the best thing I can ever have done for my husband.

My mum moved into Roselca in February and I can speak highly enough of the care that has been given to settle her in and the support given to the entire family. Every member of the team has taken time to get to know her and nothing is a problem.
Mum loves her trips out and about but is also delighted
to return to her "lovely room." Thank you for all you do.

Roselea House is a very caring home with lovely staff who cannot do enough to help. As my father is blind as well as having dementia I have found the staff to be very understanding and caring and are always trying to involve him in activities even though he is not very sociable (he cannot accept he
is blind and is somewhat embarrassed). It is a pleasure to visit as everyone is so friendly.

Roselea is a great care home. It is small, and I feel that the residents are cared for very well as the staff have time to spend with each one. Nothing is too much for them as they are very obliging.

I have been highly impressed with the care my parents have received at Roselea House. All the staff are very kind, friendly and helpful. There is a lovely atmosphere within the home with lots of chats and laughter. The dining room works well and the food/chef are great. I am delighted to have found

Although Mum had only a short time at Roselea, I feel the staff knew Mum very well.
We got to know the staff very well, and Mum was well cared for. Nothing was too much trouble, and they kept us well informed.
Lovely big rooms, which enabled us to make Mum's room look just like her wee flat, which
helped settle Mum in her new surroundings.

Roselea House is always welcoming. It has an excellent team of professional and caring staff who have an excellent understanding of Mum's needs. It is a friendly and comfortable environment. Mum settled in quickly 2 years ago and it is being well cared for. The large single room with an en-suite allows
Mum to be treated with dignity.

I cannot rate all the staff at Roselea House highly enough for the care and compassion my dad is shown every day.
Last week it was Dad's birthday and the staff couldn't have done more to help us celebrate with Dad and make us feel included as they always do.
Thank you to every member of the Roselea

Roselea House looks and smells nice. With only twenty bedrooms it never feels crowded and staff ratios feel appropriate. Staff are caring and attentive and treat everyone with dignity, kindness and patience. They spend time with individual residents, helping them feel involved.
Residents can choose
whether to be in a communal area or in their room. Communal meals are a happy event with a choice of food and drink and a pleasant atmosphere. Food is good quality, appetising and genuine efforts are made to suit everyone’s tastes.
Roselea’s manager, has been extremely helpful and supportive since our first meeting. The staff seem happy and motivated.
Mum always feared care homes but now she talks and laughs her way through every day and seems to have a great relationship with everyone in Roselea House.
For the first time in a long time I now get a full night sleep knowing mum is happy, settled and well looked after. Roselea House easily dispels the fears so many have of care homes.

This home is simply outstanding. It is a small unit with 20 beds - and I believe this allows a great relationship to develop between the staff and residents. We have had a difficult transition with my gran due to her not accepting - or remembering! - that she has Alzheimer's. I cannot fault the way
the staff have supported her and all of the family - in fact quite the opposite as they've gone out of their way to help, even to visiting gran on their days off! The rooms are all lovely and bright and very clean. There is afternoon tea each weekday and visits out each week on the bus. Any concerns or questions are quickly dealt with and nothing is ever a problem to ask about. The staff are an amazing team from the fab manager who always makes time to talk when she's there, to the domestic staff, and all the levels in between. My gran has been to some other homes for respite and none of them are up to this level.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.613)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.613) out of 10 for Roselea House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.813 for Roselea House is calculated as follows: ( (81 Excellents x 5) + (13 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 96 Ratings = 4.813
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Roselea House is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 20 registered maximum number of service users is 4, which has been reached with 8 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
