Such a caring home. It has a real family feel to the place, where it is clear the welfare and best interests of the residents are central to everything. The holistic and spiritual support is really unique and really benefits the longer stay residents.

We visited our cousin who was in good spirits. We were able to make the most of the good weather and sit outside with her in the peace and quiet of the courtyard garden. She really appreciated this quiet space where she said she could have a good natter. Coming from the Derbyshire countryside, being
able to be outside and close to nature is really important to her and we noticed a big improvement in her mood. The carers took some lovely photos of us in the garden that we can share with the rest of the family.

Very caring and friendly staff makes this a lovely place to care for your loved ones.
My mother was brought here under palliative care and the staff nurtured her back to a good state of health. I would not hesitate to recommend Henry Nihill House.

The staff and facilities at Henry Nihill House are excellent. Everyone is very attentive and friendly, and they made sure that Mum could participate in activities with the other residents for as long as she was able to. During the last days of Mum's life, the staff made every effort possible to keep
her comfortable and were incredibly patient and attentive in their care. We will always be grateful to them.

I visited my mother-in-law on the afternoon of 11.11.2024. I was invited to join the afternoon activity, a singalong with a professional performer in wartime uniform. The care staff actively encouraged appropriate participation and many residents joined in the singing. This was just the latest in a
great number of celebratory activities involving residents and providing very necessary stimulation. A thoroughly enjoyable visit and a great credit to the staff.

Mum has been a resident at Henry Nihill House for over a year now and seems to have settled in well there. She particularly enjoys going to church on a Sunday. She receives good care from the staff who are friendly and efficient. Staff are also responsive to any issues we raise concerning Mum's care.
It is easy for both family and friends to visit and visiting hours are flexible. Henry Nihill House is a welcoming environment and we are happy that Mum is being well looked after.

We have recently undertaken a review for our cousin who has been here for a year and a half, who we visit weekly. Sadly she now has severe dementia but we are so pleased with the care she is receiving and are very glad that she is a resident at Henry Nihill House.
We know that she has care 24/7: that
she is treated with dignity and respect: that her carers interact with her and ask her what she wants even though she now lacks the capacity to choose and the doctor is available every week.
She is in beautiful surroundings; she enjoys the changing seasons in the conservatory and through her window; she has a lovely large room with her own paintings, photos and belongings around her, and her own private shower room.
The home is peaceful, calm and organised. Downstairs there is a gentle hubbub of interaction between the staff and all the residents. The meals are appetising. There are always activities going on and in the summer lovely trips out. She also attends chapel.
Highly recommended.

I was a patient at Henry Nihill House for 19 months, and I must say, the care, professionalism, and respect given to me and the other patients was outstanding. For me, and what I observed and how I was, and the others, especially elderly patients, were treated, was with utmost respect and dignity, and
everybody and everything was specifically catered for, and it was nice to see people happy and calm and very well looked after. The very kind, hard-working people there helped me to get to a level of health both physically and mentally, where I was able to go home, and for that, I am truly thankful. I would definitely recommend Henry Nihill House as a place to be very well looked after and cared for, as for having first-hand experience being a patient, and also being there while Covid/lockdowns were happening, and I thought that was managed very, very well indeed, considering the mayhem and frustration it was causing. In my opinion, your family, friends, and loved ones will be very well looked after here.

Our friend was a resident at Henry Nihill House for just over 4.5 years. Throughout that time she was very well cared for by all the staff who were always cheerful and helpful. We were regularly updated about our friend's health and always consulted about her needs. We were made to feel very welcome
whenever we visited. Our friend passed peacefully away in hospital in June, aged 96, following a short illness but we know everything was done by the Henry Nihill staff to ensure all her needs were met, for which we will always be grateful.

My mother ended up here after a bad experience in another local care home run by a large company. The Henry Nihill home was without fault. The staff were very friendly as well as helpful. The home itself was very modern with all amenities, and the rooms are kitted out well. Unfortunately, my mum didn't
get around to appreciating the home to its full extent as she became ill (nothing to do with her care) and was moved to a hospital where she passed away. I would like to thank the staff that gave my mother the care that she needed. Also, other residents that I met whilst visiting my mum were also very friendly.

My mum actually ended up coming into Henry Nihill for end of life care. They were fantastic with her and me. All the staff I met have been kind, helpful, understanding and supportive. I only have positive things to say about this home, which in itself is a compliment at a time when it is so difficult
to provide services, recruit the right sort of staff to fit the ethos and ensure that the person is at the centre of care provided. Thanks to all who were involved with looking after my mum.

I have just had my third Skype call with my mother on 14 May. The home has been in lockdown since 30th April and I haven't been allowed to see her since before then.
Skype calls are booked but there is never any attempt to do them on time. For the second week running, I have had to phone the home to
remind them, after the time the call was due to start. Yet they say they did not forget. It was impossible to contact them, because the phone was answered by a triumphant-sounding message saying the phone has not been answered (which obviously I know) and to call back later. They do not have an answerphone.
Contact with relatives is very important for their mental health, particularly as they are currently confined to their rooms for weeks with no activities. I know they are short-staffed and staff have Covid, but is it really necessary to give me the runaround when I am expecting a weekly Skype with my mother?
Reply from Catherine Palmer, Manager at Community of St Mary at the Cross

I recognise your frustration as I explained in my response to your email of complaint. We were not short-staffed and it is unfortunate that on these two occasions residents in the same unit required support at the time arranged for your Skype call. However, we did support your mother to have contact with you within 15 minutes of the pre-arranged time. At times residents can require support which can be unpredictable and we do appreciate it when relatives can be understanding of this.

My mother was a resident at Henry Nihill House for about 19 years, she had a severe stroke and her needs was complicated and at times she needed around the clock care. My family appreciate everything the care Henry Nihill House offered her, from days trips to sittings down talking to her and just making
her laugh. They really go beyond what you could imagine, Each time I visited her you could see her relationships growing between staff members they would always stop to talk and make sure she was ok. This is not just a nursing home they offer so much more and go beyond whats required, I feel so happy we found this place and they will always have a special place in my heart for the love and compassion shown to Mum, even in her last days they could see her becoming more and more frail they always did their best to make sure she was never in pain or alone
Thank you so much to Henry Nihill House and the wonderful staff.

My friend, whom I was next of kin, was in the home from 5th November 2020 to 01st November 2021, the latter date being the day he died there. I simply cannot praise the staff enough for the standard of care they gave him during his time with them. Everyone was very professional and on the rare occasion
when it was not could be put down to agency staff and the problems were dealt with promptly and delicately. I know that my friend was very happy whilst there and enjoyed talking with the staff about his life and interests and the staff have told me they will miss him greatly.

My mother went into the home when she was 91, we were both impressed by the care and compassion shown. There were lots of activities even a trip to see the Christmas lights. There is a Christian ethos and my mother found this a comfort. As her mental ability faded she was still being involved, I was
always called by my Christian name and she was called by hers. When I received a call that she was fading we were allowed a visit and got to say goodbye, I later learned that the nuns had stayed with her until she passed away, this was a great comfort to the family. From reception to the manager we received 5-star care and attention and I cannot speak highly enough of all the staff.

An amazing place, everyone is kind and caring. Lovely atmosphere and the food is fantastic. We were so worried about Mum going into a home but we could not have wished for a nicer place for her. It is such a shame that the pandemic has meant residents cannot socialise and do activities as before.

My mum came to Henry Nihill House from another care home, so I think I can say with respect and honesty how amazing this home is. I’m not one for leaving reviews, but I feel I have to express my gratitude for the care they are giving my mum and only wish my mum had come here sooner. Having to watch
my mum fade away to dementia is probably one of the most heartbreaking things I had to endure up to now. To watch with amazement the care and love they give to my mum in her final weeks or months lift my heart. My mum's needs are quite complex, and her behaviour can be quite challenging, but they treat her as if she is one of their family members, which is all you can ask for. The staff show such compassion, which is absolutely amazing and have picked me up when the sadness has been too much to bear. A truly calm, loving, caring, and the most important factor I feel a safe environment for anyone’s loved ones.

My mum has been a resident for a year now, and the standard of her care is first class. I truly believe we could not have found anywhere else with such lovely and dedicated staff. They go out of their way to support Mum, celebrate her successes and show concern on her bad days as her illness has progressed.
I was especially impressed to see how they prepared special simple food for Mum to tempt her to eat as her appetite all but disappeared. This is just one example of the nurturing care mum has received.
Mum went into the nursing home at the height of Covid with all the restrictions and difficulties it entailed, but the home still managed restricted visiting using the "pod" and kept the family updated at all times. This was a vital lifeline that I know other homes did not offer. Mum has particularly appreciated the spiritual side and the opportunity to attend services in the chapel, which is another special feature of Henry Nihill.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.630)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.630) out of 10 for Community of St Mary at the Cross is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.830 for Community of St Mary at the Cross is calculated as follows: ( (78 Excellents x 5) + (16 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 94 Ratings = 4.83
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Community of St Mary at the Cross is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 30 registered maximum number of service users is 6, which has been reached with 8 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
