Reviews

9.4 St Joseph's Nursing Home has a Review Score of 9.4 (9.437)

The Review Score of 9.4 (maximum of 10) for St Joseph's Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 18 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for St Joseph's Nursing Home in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5 out of 5 from 14 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.437 for St Joseph's Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (110 Excellents x 5) + (77 Goods x 4) + (18 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 206 Ratings = 4.437

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Joseph's Nursing Home is based on 14 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 8.2 positive Reviews (41 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 14 Reviews ÷ 8.2 Target Reached = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

Can't praise St Joseph's enough for all their care and support. My Dad was only with them a short time, he got first class care from first class staff.

On Thursday 16th April my father was transferred from a hospice to St Joseph Nursing Home. My father had terminal cancer and at that stage we didn't know how long he had left.
From the moment we arrived, we were all treated with such kindness and care it made the situation much easier for us.
Dad was given the most professional and caring care that I have ever seen, I can't thank the staff enough for all their support in this most difficult time.
I and the rest of the family will never forget and we feel very lucky that Dad spent his final days in such a special place.

My Mum has been at St Jospeh's now for almost 2 years. She would never want to move to another nursing home, even if it was closer to us - she just loves St Joseph's. The staff are very friendly and they always take the time to chat and listen to my Mum's needs.
The home is always clean and tidy and the recent renovations to flooring, decor etc. These last few months have made the home a nicer and cleaner place.

Thank you for your kind review and I will pass the comments on to all of the staff

Having never had experience of a nursing home previously, it is slightly difficult to judge or compare based solely on daily visits over a 15 month period. Consequently, everything was very transparent in that time.
First impressions were that it was in need of a little TLC and coat of paint. (Much internal decorating since completed). Would benefit from a new lift. However, the staff were very friendly and caring. The Nurses and Carers were professional in their approach and demonstrated their competence but also their humanity when dealing with residents and relatives alike.
Care was taken to deliver the meal that was ordered but there were occasional mistakes.
Inevitably some staff had better interpersonal skills than others and that was noticeable. It appeared management also detected this as one new member did not last long. In fairness, staff seemed under constant pressure but some did manage to find that bit of extra time for the 'personal touch' and that always made a difference.

My aunt was treated with kindness and respect. The staff were helpful and attentive. Welcoming to us as visitors, offered drinks at any time of day or night. I couldn't praise highly enough their efforts to make my aunt comfortable and highly regarded in her final weeks.

They do what it says in the brochure with care and consideration.
My friend was only admitted as a respite patient and enjoyed the service so much he has elected to stay as he says his care is excellent.
If I am ever in the unfortunate position to need care this is the place I will elect to be looked after as the staff and management do their utmost for the smooth and safe running of St Joseph's.

Thank you for your review and I will pass these comments on to all the staff

Our Aunt was fortunate to be transferred to St Joseph's from Broomfield Hospital for end of life care. Whilst at St Joseph's she received the best of care from kind, competent, professional and caring staff. A member of staff sat with her as she slipped away peacefully before we could get to the home. Through their caring approach, Staff were able to see and appreciate the best of her, when she was at her most vulnerable. All staff did their best to engage her in conversation and activities to the best of her ability.

She had a sunny room, overlooking the grounds of St Joseph's and the whole atmosphere there is calm, unhurried and peaceful.

We too were treated with the kindest professionalism by all the staff we came into contact with. To reiterate, she was extremely fortunate to be able to live at St Joseph's at the end of a very long life.

Our heartfelt thanks to all staff.

On the whole, I think it's a really nice home.
There is always room for improvement though. The management are really nice and always seem willing to listen and help. All the carers that I've met all seem nice too, as do the maintenance people etc.
My uncle started off in a very very bad place and not once since he has been in St Joseph's have I felt a sense of panic.
The entertainments lady is great and is fantastic for all the residents. It is not a fancy home but it doesn't need to be. Foremost it needs to be well run and managed with priority given to the care and happiness of the residents who now call St Joseph's their home.

My mother recently passed away at the one after residing there for nearly a year. During that time, I found the home to always be clean and well presented. Staff were always caring and attentive, no problem was ever too big. Towards the end of mum's life, they treated her with dignity and respect. The home is well run with a family atmosphere and professional caring staff with the building set in beautiful grounds. Thank you St Joseph's.

I am very satisfied with the care my mother receives at St Joseph's Nursing Home and regard the management and staff very highly. The smoothie project undertaken to add fresh fruit into the diet of the residents I have been very impressed with, and hope that there is continued support for it to be available more than once a week. The investment currently underway to improve the interior is having a very positive impact on making the home look cleaner and brighter and I look forward to the project continuing to all areas. I am particularly interested in the planned re-landscaping of the grounds which if carefully laid out with the needs of the residents in mind, could have the makings of giving an incredibly uplifting outdoor facility for all residents, their family and friends and staff to enjoy fresh air, nature and beauty and enhancing wellbeing for all.

Compassionate and competent care, appropriately targeted to individual care needs. Good staff skill mix. Staff responsive to need. Good standards of hygiene and safeguarding. Balanced diet and appropriate focus on nutrition and hydration. Good nursing care received. Some of the facilities could be further upgraded and more activities could be offered to those residents who are able to take part. Overall the staff do a fantastic job.

These points are for improvement to a good care plan!
* Care in general is very good, but would be improved by:
- Information regarding personal care is not always accessible, often taking weeks of asking before any notable response or action taken.
- Food is often unrecognisable and with very odd mixtures on the same plate eg. mash with lasagne and fish/chips too!
- A lack of gravy, sauce or custard makes dry stodgy food very hard to chew/swallow, often requiring some liquid to be poured over it to make it edible.
- People left in rooms/communal areas alone, rather than with others.
