Windy Ridge care home provides nursing, dementia and other mental health care for up to 21 older people. The home specialises in caring for those with complex or advanced mental health conditions who may have behavioural issues as a result. The small home is dedicated to person-centred care with each individual receiving nursing and support according to their exact needs by highly trained staff.

The home is set up in a former house in the seaside village of Barton-on-Sea. The home is a short walk from the coast and a short drive from Christchurch and Bournemouth. Residents enjoy regular trips on foot or by minibus.

It features mostly single bedrooms with a few double bedrooms available for couples. The bedrooms are light and airy, with television and telephone points in each. There is a large conservatory leading to a spacious garden.

An activities coordinator arranges stimulating and sociable activities such as outings to local amusements and wildlife parks, visiting entertainers and themed days. Staff take the time to find out all residents’ favourite hobbies and pastimes so that they can make sure these are enabled and encouraged.

The home’s chef personally discusses each resident’s food preferences and dietary requirements with them to ensure that there is something for everyone in the nutritionally balanced options at every meal.

Cannot recommend this nursing home enough. Staff are always welcoming when visiting & keep you informed by telephone of any updates or problems. Dad took a while to settle as his Alzheimers made him aggressive & a danger to himself & others. The team eventually got to grips with managing him & his medication
& all this made our family visits a more pleasant experience for both him & us.
The home put on lots of special fun events & we went to several of them. All the residents seem to enjoy them & to watch the kindness & effort the staff put on was amazing. The home was always kept clean & fresh smelling & the residents were respected, very clean & presentable.
When dad was at end of life, we were able to come & go as we pleased to be with him in his last few days of life. Staff gave my dad great dignity & were helpful & respectful of our last moments with him.
10/10 for the manager, nurses, assistants, cleaning & cooking & admin staff. Set in a great location close to the sea.

Supporting residents and their families through every stage-especially during the most challenging times-is at the heart of what we do, and knowing that we could provide comfort, dignity, and kindness to your dad brings us immense gratitude. Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience. Wishing you and your family all the best.

We just needed Dad to be safe and for the carers to be safe, as Dad's cognitive function and aggression has got worse. The staff & nurses at Windyridge are attentive, caring and helpful, both for the patients and families. Dad has settled down and is being very well cared for, which is very reassuring
for us as we are two hrs away.

My wife has been at Windyridge for almost two years. Despite her not being able to talk and having to have everything done for her, I can tell that she is content at Windyridge. She loves the staff there and is constantly smiling at them. I feel that the staff also love her. Although she can't take
part in activities, she isn't neglected in that area.

Life has been a rollercoaster since dad was diagnosed with dementia. Following a long stay in hospital and different care homes, we found Windy Ridge. The last year of dad’s life was a happy one. He was well-fed, loved singing and dancing and the care he received was phenomenal. Unlike other homes,
this is like a family. If you are looking for a care home, look no further. Windy Ridge deserves every one of its 5-star reviews.

My husband has advanced Alzheimer's disease and he requires vigilant care and nursing, all of which are very well provided at Windyridge Care Home. Visiting is very restricted due to continuing Covid concerns, which is understandable but difficult for close family.
Reply from Sharron Evans, PA/Data protection at Windyridge Care Home

Thank you for reviewing Windyridge, these comments are very good for team morale, and also very helpful for people searching for a care home. We realise how important it is for families and friends to stay in contact, but we also have to ensure our residents are protected from Covid. This does sometimes mean restricting face-to-face visiting, unfortunately.

My son moved into Windyridge Care Home during Covid-19. We have limited access to the home, mostly in his room. It is clean and tidy and my son is well cared for. Some of the options we are unable to comment upon, but overall what we have seen we deem as excellent.

During my dad's brief stay at Windyridge, after spending months in and out of Hospital, the staff and manager at Windyridge were exceptional and caring beyond all means.
We stayed with my dad for his last few days at the care home and the staff were not just caring and professional for my dad but to
us as family staying with him night and day and nothing was too much trouble for the staff.
Dad's final days, although brief, were made better for his stay at Windyridge and we as a family were able to stay with him for his last moments which we will treasure forever, thanks to the kindness and care of the staff. They deserve so much and I would like to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.

My mother has been a resident at Windyridge Care Home for nearly three years, following the death of my father. Due to her advanced dementia, she could no longer be cared for at home and so a 'best interests' decision was taken to move her into a nursing home. I can honestly say that it has been such
a blessing for her to have been welcomed into Windyridge and I would like to express my thanks and gratitude for the excellent care and kindness that she has been shown since arriving. Nothing is too much trouble for the manager and her team who always show so much compassion to residents, family and friends alike.

You can visit this home at any time and will always be greeted warmly by any member of staff. My disabled late husband had severe dementia when admitted. His room was excellent and his care was superb at all times. I was with him throughout the night of his death and witnessed the end of life care for
him and also the support for me throughout. I have lived in many parts of North Midlands and South of England but have never witnessed such loving excellent care. I now have my long life friend with dementia.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.684)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.684) out of 10 for Windyridge Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.884 for Windyridge Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (84 Excellents x 5) + (11 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 95 Ratings = 4.884
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Windyridge Care Home is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 21 registered maximum number of service users is 4.2, which has been reached with 8 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
