My mum came to Highbury in July 2018 following a spell in hospital after a fall at home. Mum was shy and wary about moving to a home but was made to feel welcome and cared for from the moment she arrived. Very quickly, my sister and I could see mum had settled in and was even taking part in every activity,
something we had tried unsuccessfully to do for years! Every member of the team from the kitchen, office, caregivers and support staff were so friendly and caring, mum never felt uncared for and would often say she could have a good "laff" with everyone. She had a garden view room with squirrels visiting daily for monkey nuts and birds which mum loved to watch. Mum went to sleep with a nurse by her side until my sister and I arrived so was never alone, passing on soon after we arrived. We and our family will never forget the love and care shown to us and to our mum, for which we will be forever grateful. You are truly beautiful people with huge hearts. Thank you.
Reply from Chris Barber, Registered Nursing Care Home Manager at Highbury HouseAll of us at Highbury was very honoured and grateful to have had the pleasure of knowing your mum, and calling her by her nickname, which she loved. Your mum was full of life! She was the life and soul of the party. It was so lovely to care for her. Your dear mum was young at heart and we always had lots of fun and laughter, we all have treasured memories with her. Thank you for allowing and trusting us to see your mum through the last years of her life and for allowing her into our Highbury family, our lives are richer for having your mum be part of it.

I live in Belfast, and my brother is nearing end of life at Highbury House Brighton. I cross every weekend from Friday to Monday. It is clear the nursing care is exceptional. The care and consideration are second to none. If I were in the same position, I would like to stay my final days surrounded
by dedicated staff working tirelessly for the benefit of their residents.

I was very fortunate to move my dad from hospital into Highbury House for his end of days.
He had the most beautiful room, overlooking the lovely walled garden. I can honestly say, everyone who works in the home is beyond kind. They are a wonderful dedicated team, who give reassurance and empathy when
it is needed the most. It is most unique, in the compassion shown and care given. I know my dad felt very happy to be there and I can’t thank you enough.
Reply from Christine Barber, Nursing Care Home Manager at Highbury HouseThank you so much for your kind and honest review. It truly was an honour for all of us to be there for your dad. We take great pride in caring for elderly ones and your comments are a great boost to myself and the staff here at Highbury. Thank you.

I chose this nursing home having looked at six others, as I needed a fortnights convalescent care after a major operation. Highbury House is extremely well run - nurses and care workers, plus all the domestic staff work extremely hard and were kind and attentive. I like the range of activities for the
residents; I didn't take part that much but realised that the stimulus and interest for longterm residents were of a high level. I would recommend Highbury House to anyone.
Reply from R Charman, Home Manager at Highbury HouseThank you so much for your kind words and it was a pleasure to have you stay with us. So glad you are on the mend- Please come and see us if you are passing. The staff are missing you.

Overall we have been very satisfied with the care and attention received from the staff at Highbury House. The home has a good ambience and there is a homely feel to the place, the residents seem very happy.

The staff maintain a very clean and caring environment, they arrange daily activities for

the residents and everyone has been kind and helpful. We are able to visit at any time, sometimes taking her out and she can sit outside in the very pretty garden, which she very much enjoys. We feel confident that our aunt is very well cared for, in a safe and comfortable environment!

Wonderful caring home for my Aunt. They play music over meals from the forties and fifties and have group talks about products that were available to buy during that time.

Plus piano and songs in the evening. My Aunt joined in knowing all the words.

All are Lovely caring people who help to make

my Aunt's life a pleasure.
Reply from Alison Worms, Registered Home Manager at Highbury HouseThank you very much for your review. We are very pleased your Aunt is enjoying her time at Highbury House. It is lovely to know your Aunt enjoys the music and reminiscing over the good old days. We really strive to create a cosy, caring environment for our residents so please let us know if there's anything we can do to make life at Highbury even better.

Highbury House is an example of excellent care, attention and happy atmosphere from all my visits (which are a lot). All the staff are amazing. This, I feel, comes from the top i.e the manager. Food I've felt is always important, perhaps a little more variety and seasonal dishes could be put in place.

My father has been staying at Highbury House for the last 4 months, he was welcomed into the home by all the staff and has been completely comfortable and relaxed here ever since. All the staff have been so kind and caring towards my father. He's been looked after better than we could have ever wished
for. We have been so lucky getting Dad into Highbury. He is cared for as if by his own family. They are fantastic, caring people.

After a very full and happy life my mother moved into Highbury House in August 2017. She adjusted very quickly to life in HIghbury House and she and all her family were pleasantly surprised by the friendliness and competence of all the staff. She was even treated to a visit to the duck pond in Rottingdean
to feed the ducks. Nothing was too much trouble for them, and they welcomed members of the family visiting at any time. The food menu choices were tasty and well considered, and the activities popular. Highbury House is an oasis of peace my husband and I would happily retire to.

Highbury House is situated on a hill just off the main street in Rottingdean, a charming Sussex seaside village. The home caters for up to thirty residents and has a well-tended garden where residents and their visitors can sit outside in the summer. The main house has been recently decorated externally
and inside the house is kept spotlessly clean. My mother was a resident for a number of years until her recent death. She had advanced dementia which the management, nurses and care staff handled with both professionalism and kindness. As she declined her needs became ever more demanding but the care team were more than up to each new challenge and showed my mother respect and genuine warmth until the end. I really cannot speak highly enough of the management and staff at this home and the care and attention they gave my mother who was always very happy there.

Both my mother and my uncle have been residents at Highbury House. The House is a really lovely building, with antique furniture in the common rooms. It is kept to a very high standard of cleanliness. The grounds are well maintained and have birds and squirrels visiting. The staff are really what makes
this establishment 5 star. There is always someone ready to answer you questions and give an up date on your relative. This is due in part to the high ratio of staff to residents, allowing time for updates. The meals are cooked on site and an imaginative menu is on offer, catering for a variety of dietary needs. There are lots of activities for those able to participate, but residents are given the choice to join in and spend time in the well appointed lounge. I cannot praise Highbury House too highly, the staff show kindness and understanding to the people in their care. The Manager shows a deep understanding to the elderly people residing at Highbury House.

Current Review Score: 9.5 (9.539)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.539) out of 10 for Highbury House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 10 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 10 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.789 for Highbury House is calculated as follows: ( (90 Excellents x 5) + (24 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 114 Ratings = 4.789
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.75 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Highbury House is based on 10 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 = 3.75
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 30 registered maximum number of service users is 6, which has been reached with 10 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Registered Nursing Care Home Manager Joined: 2020

Since the start of my career in care, I have always felt privileged to work in the care sector. It all started when I was 16 and I began working in a nursing home in Horsham as a Healthcare Assistant. I am now the proud Nursing Care Manager at Highbury House and I find it very rewarding to be working with a brilliant team and giving great person-centred care. I am passionate about my family and my work and I joined Southcare Homes because their family values go all the way to the heart of the company and into the hearts of the staff that work here. I hope my extensive experience will help Highbury House achieve its potential, continue offering personalized care to residents and remain a happy home for everyone within.
