My dad has dementia and has been living here for a couple of years now. I honestly can't thank the staff enough for everything they do. They are so kind, patient, and caring, and they always treat him with respect. The new manager is amazing and has built such a lovely team who really do care about all the residents. It gives our family so much peace of mind knowing Dad is being looked after so well.

Very positive staff and atmosphere. Any issues with the room and the staff are always quick to respond and fix any problems. They've given her good birthdays and put on a good show by hiring a singer for the day (her 90th), which was thoughtful. They put good effort for festive seasons and spread a good vibe, which gives a nice change for residents.

Our mum has been cared for at the Hazel Bank Care Home for the last 13 months. I would just like to say the staff have been excellent, I don't think they could have possibly done more.
Rooms are fab, food is very nice, plentiful and also varied.
Marks out of 10 - 10!!

Thanks to all the staff for looking after her.

Who would give old people curry for dinner, who would have a dog running round the care home like Hazel Bank? The place is not very clean, and the rooms are shabby. The lift is always breaking down. The back stairs are filthy; this place is not worth the money patients pay. It needs a good clean or closing down. It smells awful.

I visited my friend several times over a few months that she lived at Hazel Bank. The home felt depressing and was in need of brightening up. There was a permanent smell of urine in the lounge areas, and the place looked very tired.
Residents often looked unkempt and my friend's clothes went missing after despite being labelled. On one occasion my friend (who had dementia) picked up a pad which was soiled with faeces and had been left in the lounge.
There appeared to be very little stimulation for residents.

Some staff seemed to be caring , others sat looking at their phones.

I do not recommend Hazel Bank Care Home. When reading previous reviews I had to check I was looking at the right service as they are so different to what I saw when my friend lived there up to recently. I am staggered to see that it has just been rated overall 'Good' by CQC & feel I have to write this review so people have an accurate picture from my direct experience of the service. The environment is depressing & scruffy , there is never a pen to sign in, nor information displayed to show staff names & photographs. My friend's (labelled) clothes were constantly going missing & often lost, when the lift broke down some people had to sleep in the dining room over the weekend. My friend's lifelong dietary preferences were not always respected, care needs were not always met - eg pressure sores developed, toenails were overgrown. Some staff were very good, others showed little interest in the residents. The glowing review on the Hazel Bank website is for another named home.

Since moving into Hazel Bank, my husband has settled in well, is very happy and comfortable there.
From my perspective, the staff are brilliant, all very welcoming & good at their jobs.
They seem like good teams led by good management. Nothing is too much trouble.

I find the atmosphere in the home is quite like home, with all the residents seeming very happy & well cared for.

Always a professional service staff always positioned carefully around the rooms and different areas giving me a sense of safety for mum. Everyone has a smile on their face no matter what the situation and staff clearly communicate with one another helping not just the residents but one another. The whole place smells fresh unlike other homes I've visited making me happy that my mum is again cared for. All residents are cleanly and appropriately dressed every time I've been in. Staff also are attentive to none residents as well when visiting. The management are fabulous very warm welcoming and knowledgeable in their own role as well as an individual in their care. They are exceptionally welcoming and helpful with anything you ask. The overall feeling is amazing when you visit this home; it's an old building but they so make it work in every aspect. Thank you to all the hardworking staff who clearly work in this home because they care.

All staff were very nice, friendly and helpful, but I do feel they are very stretched in their work and required to do too much, which leaves some important things not done. Residents sometimes appear unkempt and in unclean clothes. Many parts of the home are dirty, but again, probably down to not enough staff. The manager is very approachable and helpful, and listens to concerns.

My dad has been at Hazel Bank Nursing Home since December 2024, I think it is a great place!
My dad, who has dementia, has settled in very well and has made a couple of friends. He likes it there, I have made the following observations:
* it is a welcoming home for visitors and feels like a 'family' home
* visitors are always made welcome at any time
* the staff are always informal and helpful
* they are highly informative with me and highly attentive to my dad's needs such as him being a high risk of falling

* The manager, is also very friendly and professional

As a retired qualified Army nurse, I love that getting into this home is monitored and locked - as no resident can go outside wondering unaided, thus making it super safe.
The staff are lovely and friendly and all the residents seem happy with their environment in the day rooms and dining room.

I have found the home to be very clean on my numerous visits and other relatives that I have met and talked to seem happy too

My sister is well looked after, the staff are caring. I visit over the lunchtime period and the staff provided a lunch on every occasion which is much appreciated. One memorable event was Yorkshire day, which was well organised, great entertainment. Also my sister's birthday was celebrated with a cake made by the chef. All in all she is well looked after.

Review from S G (Brother of Resident) published on 3 December 2024 Submitted via Website
Overall Experience
CQC and other organisations are totally toothless - weak management - previous manager at Hazel Bank Nursing Home excellent. The manager is weak and toothless and arrogant - surly care assistants. Like getting in and out Fort Knox. The residents and anyone associated with them have no rights to raise concerns and complaints - not very welcoming as a visitor.
Problems with rodents - dirty toilets - a visitor toilet that used to be accessible but now has a lock with a number so visitors no longer have access to use it.

A care assistant came into my sister's room and started complaining to my sister, asked her to leave. Very unprofessional and the only home that does this sort of thing. Poorly trained staff and only an in-house complaint procedure so nothing would be done. Wouldn't recommend this place at all so please avoid sending any one you here, its a risk.
