I began working in care at the age of 17 as a Nursing Assistant in a rather large Victorian hospital in Middlesbrough. At the age of 24, I successfully completed training as a qualified nurse. During the following years, I progressed from Staff Nurse to Charge Nurse, Community Nurse, and spent several years working with the Armed Forces in the Middle East as a Nurse. I then returned to England and worked for a national social care group as a Clinical Lead, managing an early-onset dementia unit. This later progressed to an Associate Manager role and finally became a Registered Care Home Manager.
It has always been my life's ambition to work in a non-profit organisation/charity sector of care, another was working with the ex-military. My role at the Royal British Legion combines both ambitions, it is often said "Be careful what you wish for" - well, this is certainly not the case at Lister House and the Royal British Legion.
The residents, their families, and the staff are extremely well supported, the levels of staffing and support far surpass the levels that I had become accustomed to working within the commercial sector of care.
I joined the Royal British Legion at Lister House as Senior Nurse, I was then successful in gaining the post of Deputy Manager. This is an exciting role as I have direct oversight of the Nursing and Dementia Care. As there are two Deputy Managers at Lister House, I have the opportunity to spend time with our residents and families, ensuring that the care provided is person-centred and dovetailed to the needs of the individual.
I joined the Royal British Legion at Lister House in 2019 as Deputy Manager. I have direct oversight of Residential Care and the Wellbeing team that provide the wonderful activities within Lister House. I also have direct oversight of the provision of Day Care called Poppy Fields.
I joined the Royal British Legion in 2014, I am the Wellbeing Lead at Lister House. This post is extremely rich in its diversity as I plan the activities for the whole home in collaboration with the Clinical Leads and Laura, one of the Deputy Managers. I also run the Day Care Service "Poppy Fields"; unfortunately this service was suspended during the pandemic, and I am looking forward to it reopening very soon.
I am currently in the process of setting up a music therapy group with our residents, we already have a residents' choir; singing is a passion of mine and I am proud to be a member of the Military Wives Choir.
The team and I are always willing to try new activities and entertainment, the regular meetings that we have support our residents not only to choose the activities but to also organise and run them.
