Gibraltar Nursing Home is a purpose-built, nursing and residential home, set on a hillside in Monmouth, with panoramic views across the Kymin and Wye Valley.

The state-of-the-art home forms part of a care village and has landscaped gardens that link from the care centre into the retirement homes. Facilities include a hydrotherapy pool, internet, cafe, wellness therapy rooms, cinema, beauty salon and a library to name just some of the services available on-site.

Gibraltar specialises in dementia care and has a team of care staff who strive to deliver high-quality care to all residents at the home through personalised care plans and a varied programme of activities and events at the home.

The team at Gibraltar have worked tirelessly to undertake intensive training, which has resulted in a revolutionary model of care being implemented at the home. This model is about creating smaller communities or families within a home and breaking away from institutional approaches to care. This results in a better quality of life for the person receiving the service and their family.

Visiting

  • As part of their household model of care, they don’t believe in having set visiting hours – you should be able to visit your relatives or friends whenever you like, just as you would if they were living in their own home. You are welcome to visit day and night, and the team encourage you to feel comfortable and treat it as an extension of your loved one’s home. They recommend calling in advance so they can make sure that it doesn’t clash with any trips out or doctors appointments.

My mother has advanced dementia and can be very difficult, even aggressive at times. The staff in Riverley treat her with kindness and respect and know when to leave her alone and let her have her own space and time. Sometimes she is bright and funny and enjoys singing which the staff encourage. I also
appreciate the close liaison with the local GP. Above all, Mumis warm, safe and well fed.

We had found Gibraltar Nursing Home to be a very caring place and nothing is too much trouble. I have already recommended it to a few people. The staff are extremely friendly and more than willing to help in any way.

My Mom went into Gibraltar House 4/2/19. She had a fall in October 2018, been in hospital 7 weeks, to an assessment centre and finally to her forever nursing home. I cannot fault any of the staff, from your first point of contact, via the receptionists, to the care staff, the nursing staff and housekeeping
team. My Mom was not eating and wouldn't get out of the bed. With gentle encouragement, she is starting to eat a little more and actually got out of the bed into a wheelchair the other day. We are so happy. Gibraltar House is really clean. It is like a home from home and I love visiting my Mom there. The staff really do have my Mom's best interest at heart. Thank you all so much.

Allocated room was well furnished, good size with an en-suite wet room. Concerns related to Dad's care as didn't feel plan was adhered to. It stated help was required for eating and drinking. We noticed food and drinks had been left on the table in his room which resulted in regular spillages leaving
him lying unattended in wet and grubby clothes and bed linen. He was put to bed overnight in his day clothes - unnecessary as he had pyjamas. Appearance was often dishevelled and unkempt. Items went missing from his room and whilst some were found, his electric shaver is still to be returned to us. Fortunately, Dad had protection to deal with incontinence - not everyone did. This resulted in an unpleasant odour throughout the area, damp seats and, on one occasion, a resident walking the corridor leaving a trail of faecal matter. For those of you considering sending your loved ones to reside here, please check first that this care home is able to cater fully to their needs.

My mother-in-law was admitted to Gibraltar House in the very final stages of her life to ensure her life ended pain-free and as comfortable as possible. All staff offered empathic, high-quality care and were respectful of her and our wishes as a family. Thank you.

Since my husband and I moved in on November 1st, 2017, we have made more friends and enjoyed more events than in the previous seven years. Our flat has everything we need, the attention given to every request is outstanding, and we feel so safe. Yesterday, we returned from a 5-day coach holiday to Llandudno,
during which we visited the old town of Chester, and included a day's outing to Caernarvon, Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysyliogogogoch*, beautiful Bettws y Coed and a breathtaking trip through the Snowdonia Mountains. We came back from living in Australia for over 50 years, and until now, sadly regretted the move. But just over one month in Gibraltar Village has changed all that, and we couldn't be happier. Gibraltar Village is almost full of like-minded residents.

Staff are very friendly and helpful and professional. I came into Gibraltar as a respite resident with a broken leg. I have been here 3 months and am nearly ready to go home.

Little details/snacks are looked after here and made it feel like home. I even made friends with some of the residents.

Current Review Score: 8.4 (8.434)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.4 (8.434) out of 10 for Gibraltar Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.1 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.366 for Gibraltar Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (58 Excellents x 5) + (23 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) + (5 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 93 Ratings = 4.366
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.068 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Gibraltar Nursing Home is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.7
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 95 registered maximum number of service users is 19. 7 Positive Reviews ÷ 19 = 0.368
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
