My family and I are very happy with my husband’s care. He has settled in very quickly and at no point has he complained about anything within the home. I have always found the staff to be very helpful and courteous. I was dreading the time when I would have to put my husband into a care home but this
hasn’t happened due to the care and devotion shown by the staff. Thank you all very much.

I am so pleased to leave a recommendation for Struan Lodge. My Mum had really hit crisis point staying at home late last year and we arranged for her to move to a Care Home quite reluctantly. However, Struan Lodge have been fantastic. The staff are simply lovely. It is such a relief to know Mum is being
looked after so well. Her dementia is so progressed it makes things very difficult but they treat her with the greatest respect and it's a weight off our shoulders to know she is clean, safe and happy. Her room has a lovely view of the trees, birds and squirrels and we've made it homely with her own bedding and lots of photos. She is a falls risk since she is blind in one eye and quite frail and the manager and staff made special additional arrangements during the Covid lockdown to ensure she was safe. Thank you so much to everyone at Struan Lodge for everything you are doing for all your residents at what must be a very stressful time.

Despite the restrictions on visiting, the care provider has kept me up to date with everything happening, especially the issues regarding Covid19. I get regular updates either via an email or the regular newsletter.

The team at Struan Lodge are very helpful and look after my father very well. Activities he enjoys from dominoes to walks in the garden. His room always smells fresh and is tidy. The menu is a good selection, and the afternoon tea my father enjoys.

A warm welcome from all of the staff and management. Even in difficult covid times, they have managed to make my aunt an active member of the home's community.

I just wanted to say thank you for everything you did for my Father over the last few months and for your understanding and compassion in dealing with my Mother and the family. These are extraordinary times which make it even harder for you to do your jobs, and it is a great credit to you and your team
that you continue to provide a safe and comfortable environment for your residents, at considerable sacrifice to your own personal lives. We miss Dad greatly but have a mountain of happy memories to sustain us, and I am glad that you managed to see something of his character in his time with you. Once again, many thanks for everything, and best wishes.
Reply from Tabatha Jacome-Sturge, Manager at Struan Lodge

We had the pleasure of your dad's company for a few months and what an enjoyable few months that was, he brightened up our days with his smile. On top of that, we were lucky enough to have spent time with your mum and the family. Thank you for your wonderful and heartfelt comments and we are glad you have so many happy memories to keep you smiling. Best wishes from Tabatha and all the team at Struan Lodge.

Although very happy with the staff in the home I am absolutely shocked by the recent rise in the cost of residency in the home of 10%, bringing the monthly cost to just under £6,500 per month. Having made my enquiries at other local Care Home who provides the same service as my sister-in-law receives
and hearing the reaction of their management which was disbelief and amazement at the rise strengthened my thoughts re the same. I would point out that the rise was brought in during the time of lockdown which obviously prevented the persons responsible for individual residents to take any actions they deemed in principle to take. I am at this time giving my own consideration to any future action. I have been advised of the several routes down which I can go.
I have contacted the Head Office but their response is unfortunately uninterested.
I would again stress that I have no complaint whatsoever with the staff of the home.

Thank you for your review. It is great to hear that our team are delivering great quality care and support to your Mother. We regret that our current fees are causing concern to you. We aim to ensure that our fees are comparable to other Care Homes within the area.

Struan Lodge is a wonderful place, the staff are outstanding at their jobs, very caring thoughtful and friendly. It is very well organised and managed, very clean. They handled the lockdown extremely professionally, giving me peace of mind that they did everything within their powers to protect all
the residents, they had zero cases which was a huge accomplishment.

Day to day care in the home itself has been and remains excellent. Staff are friendly and caring and make residents feel cared for and content. However, communication with residents and their families regarding costs and fees, in particular, proposed fee increases, in my opinion, has been nothing short
of appalling and requires to be addressed.
Reply from Carolyn McDonald, Manager at Struan Lodge

The management team within Struan Lodge focus solely on the care delivery and well being of its residents on a day to day basis. Care is delivered to a high standard and this is reflected in the positive comments made by family members and those residing in the home. Fees and costings are under the control of the business directors in head office who advise family members to contact them directly if they have any questions or comments, however, the Struan Lodge management team have an open-door policy and welcome visitors too. It should be noted that Struan Lodge is one of the less expensive private care homes in Edinburgh and we believe for the service we provide, we are fairly priced.

Current Review Score: 9.5 (9.513)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.513) out of 10 for Struan Lodge is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.813 for Struan Lodge is calculated as follows: ( (65 Excellents x 5) + (15 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 80 Ratings = 4.813
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.7 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Struan Lodge is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.7
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 30 registered maximum number of service users is 6, which has been reached with 7 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
