Dementia Care Types Mild Dementia
Someone living with our definition of "mild dementia" might experience some or all of the following:
- Memory problems such as misplacing items and not be able to recall recent events (however, in some forms of dementia a person's memory may be unchanged)
- Difficulties thinking through problems and planning, making decisions
- Language and communication issues such as finding it difficult to recall the appropriate word in a conversation or following a conversation
- Poor orientation, getting lost in areas previously familiar to them
- Difficulty judging distances (more falls than usual)
- Changes in their normal mood including anxiety and depression
- In certain types of dementia, personality and behaviour changes may be present alongside or instead of issues with memory or concentration.
Moderate Dementia
Someone living with our definition of "moderate dementia" might experience some or all of the following:
- Worsened memory problems. Not always recognising own family members and friends. Repeating the same questions over and over again
- Worsened language and communication issues, forgetting what they are saying mid-sentence. Not being able to understand what someone else is saying
- More frequent confusion, e.g. about the time of day or where they are, including their own home
- Apathy, depression and anxiety
- Believing things that aren't true (paranoia)
- Frequent hallucinations
- Lack of emotional control, quick to anger, fearfulness, sadness
- Loss of inhibition
- Difficulties sleeping or waking during the night and behaving as though it is daytime - loss of circadian rhythm.
Advanced Dementia
Someone living with our definition of "severe dementia" might experience some or all of the following:
- Severe memory problems. Not recognising family members and friends. Not being able to recall their own name
- Severe language and communication issues, not being able to understand what someone else is saying
- Severe confusion, e.g. about the time of day or where they are, including their own home
- Apathy, depression and anxiety
- Believing things that aren't true (paranoia)
- Frequent hallucinations
- Lack of emotional control, quick to anger, fearfulness, sadness
- Loss of inhibition
- Difficulties sleeping or waking during the night and behaving as though it is daytime - loss of circadian rhythm.
Verbally or physically aggressive behaviour
If your loved one displays this type of behaviour you may need a care home that has specially trained staff. Verbal/physical aggression is often defined:
- Consistent shouting and screaming
- Verbal abuse

My mother has been extremely well looked after in Sandringham and all through the difficult lockdown period, the staff have continued to be professional and caring. We as a family appreciate the efforts made to keep in contact through FaceTime calls and photographs sent - and are thankful that mum was in such a safe, pleasant environment.

Unfortunately, my father got infected with Covid19 in this home and subsequently passed away. There always seemed to be a shortage of staff and meetings between management and families were non-existent.
We are so grateful to all the staff for the care and dedication they have given to my father-in-law, they have gone over and above in their care. Each week the activities therapist arranges FaceTime with ourselves and my father-in-law which is so much appreciated as in these times we can’t visit. Before the virus we always brought him a bag of goodies every other day which he looked forward too, we now bring it down once a week and are grateful the staff give it to him. Thank you can't say this enough.

Selecting a suitable care home for an independent mother aged 92 was never going to be an easy task however we know we have made the right choice, and my mother is now so happy, content and safe. One of the hardest but best choices we have ever had to make and would highly recommend this home to anyone.

I have been so impressed with my experience of Sandringham. The staff seem to genuinely care about my granny and they have built up a lovely rapport with her. Everyone working there has been brilliant throughout the lockdown, from the activities/events they have put on for residents to the video and telephone calls to keep us connected. Granny seems so happy and content and I couldn't ask for more than that.

We are very happy with the care that my relative receives. The care at Sandringham is good and we are pleased with how well my relative is cared for. At times we feel Sandringham could do with more staff. The management is great and have always been approachable and are able to rectify any concerns. We have seen great changes since the current manager took up post.

I'm happy that she is being looked after well. I don't have to worry about her unlike when she was at home with carers coming in. She is warm and comfortable and safe and has activities to bring her some interest, rather than lying at home sleeping on the settee looking at the four walls.

We as a family are happy with the care mum receives.
My mum is very settled and content and treated well by the staff, in all areas the staff are excellent.

The administration lady is very welcoming, approachable and accommodating.
The home manager is always nice.

Mum has been in this care home for 4 years and I know I could not find anywhere any better. This is a great place for my mum. Mum is very happy and always says so. Mum loves to take part in activities and events with the other residents. The staff are all very attentive to her.

Initially, I was a very reluctant service user's relative; no one could possibly care for my mum the way my brother and I did. How wrong can a person be? Sandringham has become my Mum's home and the staff and residents her extended family.
I guess Mum's tenure in Sandringham is encapsulated in one word - 'contentment'; please believe me when I say - that is priceless.
