About the role

Holywell® Care Group is looking for a reliable, practical and experienced Maintenance Worker to join our team in Preston.

As a Maintenance Worker, you will work across our care homes and throughout the wider organisation, helping to ensure our buildings, facilities, equipment and external areas are safe, well maintained, clean and comfortable for the people who live and work in them.

As part of the role, you will also be responsible for supporting and supervising a Maintenance Apprentice, helping them develop their practical skills, knowledge and understanding of general maintenance while working towards their qualification.

You will be responsible for a wide range of general maintenance, repairs and groundskeeping tasks. This is a hands-on role that requires good practical skills, attention to detail and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

You will also contribute to our health and safety responsibilities, carrying out regular checks, reporting issues and ensuring maintenance work is completed to a high standard.

Key duties and responsibilities

Your duties will include, but are not limited to:

• Carrying out general repairs, maintenance and decorating across our properties.
• Painting, decorating and redecorating as required.
• Carrying out minor plumbing, electrical, joinery and carpentry repairs.
• Repairing fixtures, fittings, locks, walls, glazing and other building components.
• Replacing light bulbs and carrying out other routine maintenance tasks.
• Inspecting equipment and building systems and reporting faults or issues.
• Carrying out routine maintenance and regulatory checks in accordance with relevant manuals and procedures.
• Checking electrical equipment and wiring and reporting any faults or concerns.
• Assisting with the installation of appliances, equipment, furniture and service-user accessories.
• Carrying out weekly fire safety checks and supporting fire drills and emergency evacuations.
• Ensuring fire alarms and other safety systems are functioning correctly and reporting any concerns.
• Maintaining heating, ventilation, water, refrigeration and other building systems.
• Keeping gutters, drains and external areas clear and well maintained.
• Undertaking gardening and grounds maintenance, including mowing lawns and managing waste.
• Monitoring pest control requirements and reporting any concerns.
• Liaising with external contractors and assisting contractors when required.
• Working with colleagues and other professionals during renovations and improvement works.
• Keeping maintenance records, inspection records and other documentation up to date.
• Reporting any issues requiring attention to management, particularly those relating to health and safety or compliance.
• Cleaning and tidying work areas following completion of maintenance tasks.
• Being available to respond to emergency maintenance call-outs when required.
• Supporting, supervising and mentoring the Maintenance Apprentice, providing guidance and practical instruction across a range of maintenance tasks.
• Helping the Maintenance Apprentice develop their practical skills and knowledge, ensuring they work safely and follow relevant policies, procedures and health and safety requirements.
• Allocating suitable tasks to the Maintenance Apprentice and monitoring their progress and development, working with their training provider and management team where required.

About you

We are looking for someone who is reliable, organised and practical, with a keen eye for detail and a positive approach to their work.

You should have good technical knowledge and practical experience in areas such as plumbing, carpentry, decorating, electrical maintenance or general building maintenance.

You will need to be comfortable working on your own initiative while also being a supportive member of the wider team. The ability to prioritise and adapt to changing requirements is essential.

As you will have responsibility for supporting a Maintenance Apprentice, you should also be able to share your knowledge, demonstrate practical skills and provide clear guidance and encouragement to someone developing their career in maintenance.

You should have:

• Previous experience in a general maintenance or similar role.
• Practical skills in areas such as plumbing, carpentry, decorating, joinery or electrical repairs.
• Basic knowledge of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, plumbing and electrical systems.
• Experience using hand tools and electrical tools safely.
• Knowledge and understanding of health and safety requirements.
• Good written and spoken English and basic numeracy skills.
• Basic computer skills and the ability to maintain digital records.
• The ability to read and understand technical manuals and drawings.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Good organisational and planning skills.
• Physical stamina and manual dexterity.
• The ability to work at height, with refresher training provided where required.
• A flexible approach and the ability to respond to and reprioritise tasks.
• An understanding of the needs and challenges faced by people receiving care and support.
• The ability to support, mentor and develop a Maintenance Apprentice.

Experience working within a healthcare, social care or residential care environment would be advantageous.

Qualifications

A relevant maintenance qualification or trade qualification would be advantageous. However, proven practical experience in a similar role may be considered in place of formal qualifications.

The following would be beneficial:

• GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths.
• Relevant trade qualifications.
• Completion of an apprenticeship.
• Relevant qualifications or experience in plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, gardening or general maintenance.

Essential requirements

Due to the nature of the role:

• You must hold and maintain a full, clean UK driving licence.
• An Enhanced DBS disclosure will be required.
• You must be able to work safely and professionally in a social care environment.
• You must be willing to undertake relevant training, including refresher training where required.
• Please note: Holywell® Care Group is not currently offering Skilled Worker visa sponsorship for this position. Applicants must therefore already have the right to work in the UK.
