The formal opening, of Jewish Care’s newest care home, Sidney Corob House, a residential care home for older adults with mental health needs, took place on Sunday 27th March.
Originally known as Westmount, the home used to meet the needs of older Jewish adults, but was closed in 2008 and was generously transferred by the Corob family to Jewish Care two years ago. Since then it has undergone extensive refurbishment and has welcomed 25 residents who moved from their Jewish Care home in Mapesbury Road, Willesden.
Elizabeth Corob explained that she and her late husband, Sidney, “wanted to make sure the home could continue to be used to care for members of the Jewish community with the same ethos and quality as before.”
Richard Mintz, a trustee of Jewish Care, who was instrumental in the transfer of the home, welcomed guests. He explained what a difference the new surroundings were making to the health and wellbeing of the residents. He went on to introduce Lord Levy, President of Jewish Care, who welcomed the residents to their new home saying, “To our Sidney Corob House residents, we hope that you feel that this is a real home from home for you and that you feel part of our Jewish Care family.”
Lord Jonathan Sacks, the Chief Rabbi, the guest of honour, talked movingly about Jewish Care and their staff and volunteers saying, “Jewish Care are the friends and family of all the people that need help in our community. Their staff and volunteers are really angels in human form.”
The commemorative plaque was unveiled by Elizabeth Corob and her daughters, she said, “This is the start of a new chapter, I wish all the residents and staff all the best, it is so lovely to see so many happy faces once again.”
