Home hosts Travelling Museum 1950s style

HC-One’s Grosvenor Housel Care Home in Harrogate hosted a reminiscence afternoon attended by Residents’ and relatives.

Ann Hanson, who runs a Travelling Museum recently made a stop at Grosvenor House for a trip down memory lane, a great favourite with both Residents and their relatives. The 1950s were a magical time of fifties suburbia when socks were darned, baths shared and kids roamed wild.

The theme for the afternoon was ‘corner shops from the 1940’s to the 1960’’. Grosvenor House have their very own shop on site and this was used as part of the 1950’s shop talk. This was the time when the corner shop loomed large in the life of a community.

In those days many items had to be packed on the premises, sugar and tea weighed into half or one pound paper bags, cheese slabs were cut by the cheese cutter, which was a wooden slab and a length of fine but strong wire. The meat sliced using the shining cutting blade and wrapped in grease proof paper and set on a tray in the shop window. These thought provoking memories were shared by the Residents, each with their own tales of the corner shop at the end of their street!

It was also an opportunity to remember what it was like to ‘play’ back then as there was no mobiles, barely a telly, internet or computer games that keeps the youth of today occupied, back then it was the simplest of equipment; jacks, marbles, skipping ropes, bats, balls and the good old bicycle!

Sue Nutter, Grosvenor House Care Home Manager, said: “Residents, relatives and staff always enjoy Ann’s visits, we are all becoming old enough to remember some of the items she shows us! (apart from the young carers of course) and it was a great interactive afternoon we all enjoyed”.

HC-One is also celebrating achieving a 9.4 average rating on the sector’s leading care home comparison website carehome.co.uk. The high rating puts HC-One homes into the very best company in the care home sector, committed to providing kind care to Residents.
