Carpenders Park Care Home near Watford welcomed residents, families, and the local community to a "Back in My Day" coffee morning focused on celebrating local history, with two engaging guest speakers and a selection of coffee, tea, and freshly baked cakes.

“Back in My Day” Community Coffee Morning: The morning began with a two-minute silence led by guest speaker, Collin Oaks, as residents, staff, and families gathered to honour those who served in the War. Collin brought along a collection of historical items and visuals from a reference book to support his talk, guiding everyone through the origins of Remembrance Day, the Armistice, and both World Wars.

During the event, resident Doreen, who is 101 years old, proudly shared her wedding photographs and images of her late husband, who served during the war. As her photos were passed around during the event, fellow resident Sylvia said, “You’re famous now, my darling.”

Doreen also delighted guests with stories from her younger days, detailing, “In the Army, I used to mend all the motorbikes and vehicles. I even met the Queen herself.” This led to a discussion about the Monument to the Women of World War II, which was commissioned by the Queen herself to honour the contribution of women during the wartime. Many guests admitted they had never known this existed.

Second guest speaker, John Crawford, continued the morning with a talk on Watford’s war memorials, Armistice Day, the meaning behind the poppy flower, and his wartime experience.

Attendees were amazed when John shared the story of his grandfather, who flew a Sopwith Camel plane. He still owns the original tip of the propeller today, which has been transformed into a photo frame that’s been passed down through his family for generations. Claire Masterson, Home Manager, added: “Our residents loved reminiscing, asking questions, and seeing all the items that were brought along especially for our event. It was such a lovely way to celebrate the past together.”
