My mother initially came in for respite care and was very worried. The staff made her feel very welcome and did everything to help her feel as settled as possible. The management were extremely helpful when we were looking for somewhere for mum and I am very happy with our choice. Mum is now staying
on here and looks very well and relaxed.
Reply from Samantha Thorne, Home Manager at Downs HouseThank you so much for taking the time to share your kind words. We are delighted to hear that your mother felt welcomed and supported from the moment she arrived. We understand that moving into a care home can feel daunting, and it means a lot to know that our team helped her feel comfortable and settled.
We are so pleased to see her looking well and relaxed, and we are grateful for the trust you have placed in us. We will continue doing our very best to ensure she feels happy, cared for, and at home.

My mum was a resident of Downs House from April 2024 until she dies on 12th May 2026.
The building is bright, clean and welcoming, with plenty of communal space including an accessible outside patio and a lovely garden.
The real stars are the staff - nothing was too much trouble; they take the time
to get to know the residents. Their kindness, cheerfulness, understanding, respect and patience is endless! As a retired nurse myself I could see how well trained and supervised they were. They cared beautifully for my mum right to the end.
Mum had a bright, spacious ensuite room (all the rooms were ensuite).
Reply from Samantha Thorne, Home manager at Downs HouseThank you so much for taking the time to share such a heartfelt review. We are truly grateful for your kind words and it was a privilege for the whole team at Downs House to care for your mum during her time with us. We are so pleased to hear that you found the home welcoming and that the environment, facilities and garden helped create a comfortable and positive place for residents. Most importantly, we are touched by your comments about our team. Our staff always strive to provide care that is compassionate, respectful and personalised, and it means so much to know that this was recognised.

A very caring environment, well-located care home. Friendly staff; many with longevity at the home, which is a good sign - with genuine care for the residents.
Professional, respectful, allowing each resident to have the space and be who they are - live with the needed support and care each individual
needs.
Families are always welcome. Light rooms with multiple communal spaces. Good activities, often daily and residents can join us at Petersfield Dementia choir each week, should they wish to.

The staff at Downs House have been amazing. My mum came down from Birmingham, she was frail and frightened, she had not walked for 8 weeks and was too scared and weak to try. 7 weeks later, after the care, and encouragement of all the staff, Mum is walking every day and is fully immersed in all the
amazing activities that take place every day. I have not seen Mum looking so well and so happy for years! Thank you, Downs House.
Reply from Samantha Thorne, Home manager at Downs HouseThank you so much for your kind and heartfelt words. It means so much to all of us to hear about your mum's journey since joining Downs House. Seeing her regain her confidence, strength and independence has been a real joy. The progress she has made in just seven weeks is remarkable, and we are delighted that she is now walking every day and fully enjoying the many activities on offer. Knowing that she is looking so well and happy is the greatest compliment we could receive. Your mum is a much-loved member of our Downs House family, and it is truly a pleasure and a privilege to care for her. Watching her confidence grow and seeing her engage so positively with life here has been incredibly rewarding for our team.

The staff here are all wonderful! They are so welcoming & friendly. After a stay in hospital everyone has been so kind & warm to dad & encouraged him with his eating & drinking.
Lots of fun times are had with different entertainment. Music especially has helped dad immensely.
The food is great &
dad always says how comfy his bed is!
Thank you for helping through a difficult time.

My mum has been a resident at Stroud House for just over a year now and l cannot rate it highly enough. All the staff go out of their way to give the best possible care, always.
Relatives are welcomed are welcome to come & see their family members at any time, sometimes staff will encourage you to
limit visiting at certain times, but this is ALWAYS discussed with relatives & nothing is enforced.
Staff care as much for the relatives as they do residents which is much appreciated.
The activities lead, is passionate about her role & this shows daily, the range of activities and engagement from ALL staff is wonderful, particularly as the residents requirements differ a lot.
The food served is fabulous, varied & of a very high standard, staff ensure that all residents are offered regular fluids, with a choice of flavours.of squash.
It would be good for mums room to have an en-suite but this is a minor thing & having the excellent things mentioned above far outweighs having an en-suite!

Downs House was always a warm friendly place that felt like home when you walked in.
Sadly, since the change of ownership, the homely atmosphere is gradually disappearing. The bottom line seems to be becoming more important than the needs/wishes of the residents - whose home it is.
Vacancies are
not, or only very slowly, replaced, so there are fewer staff to look after the residents - carers have less time to get to know an individual's likes and dislikes, wants and needs; less time to form the relationships essential in care homes, especially with dementia residents who need so much more carers' time.
Reply from Samantha Thorne, Home manager at Downs HouseThank you for sharing your feedback. At the time of your experience, Downs House was in a period of transition and supported by an interim manager while we addressed historical challenges. We chose not to rush recruitment, prioritising the appointment of skilled staff whose values align with our own, and we are pleased to say this has now been achieved.
Our care team is proud of the compassionate, person-centred care they provide, building positive relationships to ensure residents' needs and choices are respected. We now have a strong, stable management team and are proud to have recently been rated Good by the CQC in all areas, reflecting the significant improvements made.
We are sorry that your experience did not meet expectations at the time and would have welcomed the opportunity to discuss your concerns. You are always welcome to visit Downs House again or attend one of our open days to see the improvements made. We wish you all the best.

The Stroud House staff have been caring for my father since he was diagnosed with dementia and we were advised by health professionals that he would need residential care.
The management and staff at Stroud House are caring and helpful and are always quick to inform family of any care needs or issues
as they arise. They are always very happy to provide updates on-ongoing care which is very comforting for the family. Stroud House has its roots as a family run business and still maintains that feel with its friendly and caring atmosphere.

I can't recommend Stroud House enough. Mum was always resistant to going into care but her needs were becoming more challenging and dad wasn't well enough to continue caring for her. Stroud House were supportive and welcoming right from the start and eventually, with patience and understanding from
Sam and her team, mum settled into her new home. There have been ups and downs along the way with mums health and needs, but the staff have always been quick to respond and always keep me informed.
The home has recently undergone a refresh of decor and it's a lovely, welcoming space for the residents and their visitors. There are lots of activities provided, and opportunities to get out and about and families are always welcome to join in. All the staff welcome us by name, with lovely smiles and offers of tea or coffee which is always nice, especially as mum and I used to enjoy going for coffee and cake together.
Reply from Samantha Oliver, Home Manager at Stroud HouseThank you so much for your kind words. I know how difficult those first steps into care can be, and I'm so glad that, with time and support, your mum has been able to settle here at Stroud House. It's lovely to hear that you feel welcomed when you visit - those coffee and cake moments are special, and I'm so pleased we can help you keep enjoying them together. Your message really means a lot, and I'll make sure the whole team hears it. Xx

My mother moved to Stroud House mid-July and I've been pleasantly surprised at how well she has settled. She really was resistant to the move from her own home, but her dementia was getting worse and she wasn't looking after herself properly. The staff have been very caring and kind with her and Mum
says she is very well looked after and enjoys the activities and the meals. It's such a relief to know someone is there for her at all times.
Reply from Samantha Oliver, Home Manager at Stroud HouseThank you so much for your kind words. We understand how difficult the transition can be, both for residents and their families, so it's wonderful to know that you feel reassured she is safe and supported.
