My mother was a resident at Downs House for recuperative care for 2 months after an operation. I found the House Manager to be responsive, clear and efficient, as well as kind and understanding of our needs. All the Downs House team - day and night - have been incredibly kind but also practical, working
efficiently with visiting Community Care Team staff, and being very responsive when my mother wasn't feeling well. I felt reassured throughout her stay that she was in good hands, and always felt welcomed when I visited.
Staff take time to chat both to visitors and residents, and the other residents look content, clean, warm and safe. The food seems good and the rooms are all clean and tidy, as are the communal areas. There is something going on most days for residents.
I would be happy to recommend Downs House to others, and would have no hesitation in bringing my mother back for a longer or permanent stay if that became necessary.

My mother has been residing at Stroud House for nearly 3 years now, and has always received loving care and attention from the staff. A recent very serious medical incident caused by my mother's dementia, made us appreciate them even more as our mother's life was saved by quick thinking staff and,
in particular, the manager.. We can't thank her enough.
We are able to join mum for some lunch from time to time which works really well, and we get a chance to enjoy some of the activities that the Home organises for its residents, including some very good singers. Mum always enjoys their visits.
The staff all really care about their residents and we are continually reminded of what a great discovery this Home was for our mother.

My 96 year old Mother was admitted to this home for respite care after fracturing her wrist.
When admitted she was really withdrawn and non-verbal after her hospital stay and in pain but with the love and care she has received she is now a very happy outgoing lady, who has made friends with both residents
and staff. The love and care stems from the top and is so evident when you walk in. It is truly an amazing home environment. I am hoping that she is able to stay. Also she has not mentioned going home, she is really embracing her new lease of life.

Reply from Samantha Oliver, Home Manager at Stroud House

Thank you so much for your beautiful words - they truly mean the world to us.It has been an absolute privilege to care for your mum and to witness the incredible transformation she has made during her time with us. Seeing her smile, laugh, and connect with those around her is exactly why we do what we do. Moments like these are a reminder that the smallest acts of kindness and patience can have the greatest impact.Your recognition of the team - and how the warmth stems from every level - is deeply appreciated. We are all committed to creating a home, not just a care setting, and knowing that your mum feels safe, happy, and at ease here brings us immense joy. Please know that she is very much a part of our family here, and we will continue to support her every step of the way. My husband is a day visitor and from day one has been made to feel special by the all the staff. Greeted at the door by name and after settling in the lounge, enjoys the day , he has lunch and refreshments.
The home has activities most days and he especially enjoys the singers that come in.
Management
has no problem if i need to change the day or need extra days.
It was not a easy decision to use day care but after the first visit , I have no trouble with him going and this gives me a worry free day and an opportunity to see friends and family that live fuller away.
We are also welcome to any of the activities/ entertainment on different days to his normal day.
In all a positive experience for both of us.

My sister-in-law is being extremely well looked after. The care and attention she receives is second to none. She is always clean, tidy and in good spirits. Her state of mind has improved since going to the home as all the worry of domestic chores and the everyday task of looking after herself have
been removed. The home provides stimulating outings as well as in house entertainment. The staff are kind, caring and efficient. If I have a question about my sister-in-laws care there is always a member of staff to answer my query. Her room is very nice and south facing gets lots of sunshine. There are also French Windows with access to the well tended garden which my sister-in-law loves. She goes for little walks twice a day. She says the food is excellent and if she feels like something between meals there is always a willing member of staff to provide it. All in all we are very pleased my sister-in-law is being looked after in Downs House where she is happy and contented.

My dad moved to Downs House last autumn and has a lovely garden room with his own bathroom. He has a bird feeder and flowers just outside his window, and a door into the garden so he can sit out there when the weather is warmer. He is well looked after by caring staff who provide plenty of activities

My mother-in-law moved into Stroud House in January 2025 due to a decline in her dementia and I'm happy to say she's now in the right place. The staff are so kind, caring and patient. She has received lots of one-to-one care to help settle her in and I've never seen her happier.
She seems to be doing
something different every day, be it, dancing, crafts, and visits out and about which is amazing. The carers do an amazing job helping to navigate these vulnerable people through such a confusing time.

Mum went into care in early January after a stay in hospital. The transition Stroud House performed was nothing short of a miracle! Mum suffers very badly with anxiety issues so it was a real worry as to how this would pan out. In a very short space of time, she seems to be settling in her "new home".
The staff are, attentive, professional and accommodating, to both the residents, and the families, my mind has been put at rest that Mum is safe and well cared for. Sam, the manager has gone out of her way to reassure both myself and Mum.
Another positive of Stroud House is the amount of activities for the residents, never a dull moment with everything from Burns night bagpipes to country walks.
Stroud House has made a difficult family time, a lot more Human. Thank you.

Thank you for taking the time to send a reply. It means a lot. Mum has the most amazing, addictive personality and it is a joy to have her at Stroud House. I will pass on the review to the staff as it does give them such a boost. Eventually Mum will finish knitting my leg warmers. She has started them about 30 times now lol.

We visited a very old friend who had only quite recently started her life at Stroud House. It was the first time we had been there and we went to have lunch with her on her birthday. The staff were all very friendly and efficient and we had a good lunch at a table they had kindly set up for us in a
place where we could have a pleasant uninterrupted chat. There was a birthday banner and balloons. The place seemed spotlessly clean, with a happy atmosphere and plenty of staff. We were re-assured that our friend was being well looked after and with lots going on, enjoying a stimulating time.

We were so blessed to find such a lovely place for Mum and everyone has been so understanding and thoughtful. The staff are so respectful

We feel very grateful that she is now being cared for in by a lovely team.
The room is freshly painted and decorated, the home very clean and the food is prepared and cooked to a fabulous standard.
Activities that are done with the residents have been brilliant for Mum with singing and music daily.

My mother recently moved into Stroud House after my father died who was her main caregiver and the home has been exceptionally kind and caring, they have been very welcoming to both my mother and other family members visiting always offering tea or coffee, etc. The food is of a high standard.
If there
is a query or problem we can ask and it has been sorted out straight away.
My mother loves the activities with the activity coordinator, especially the dementia choir.

Stroud House was a warm, welcoming place from the very start when Mum moved there - and it quickly became her home in the true sense of the word. Mum loved the staff and she was so well looked after. Not only that, but the staff were very supportive of us as a family too. There are lots of activities

Following a further deterioration in her general health, our mum/gran moved to Stroud House, a smaller sister home to Down's House where daily life is at a quieter pace and more medical/nursing support is available. The staff were outstanding in their welcome and care, but sadly her health continued
to decline.
Our heartfelt thanks to all at Stroud House for all the love and excellent care given to our mum and gran over the last few months of her life. The care and attention she received at Stroud during the final weeks of her life was second to none and akin to that provided by a Hospice. The level of practical, medical, and emotional care she received was incredible and provided great comfort both to her and the family, enabling her to be "at home " when she died.
We will be eternally grateful for the support to us as a family which took a lot of the anguish and worry off our shoulders. The highest recommendation we can give. Thank you one and all.

Reply from Samantha Oliver, Home Manager at Stroud House

From day one, my wife and I have always been treated with the utmost respect and kindness. Now that she is in the advanced stages of dementia, life has become considerably more stressful and difficult to comprehend as each day another problem rears its ugly head, but despite this, the staff are always
cheery and smiling in their approach and handling of the situation and deal with it very professionally. My wife, very obviously, enjoys her day care there and I hope in the future when needs must, she will become a resident.
