Downs House was always a warm friendly place that felt like home when you walked in.
Sadly, since the change of ownership, the homely atmosphere is gradually disappearing. The bottom line seems to be becoming more important than the needs/wishes of the residents - whose home it is.
Vacancies are
not, or only very slowly, replaced, so there are fewer staff to look after the residents - carers have less time to get to know an individual's likes and dislikes, wants and needs; less time to form the relationships essential in care homes, especially with dementia residents who need so much more carers' time.
Reply from Samantha Thorne, Home manager at Downs HouseThank you for sharing your feedback. At the time of your experience, Downs House was in a period of transition and supported by an interim manager while we addressed historical challenges. We chose not to rush recruitment, prioritising the appointment of skilled staff whose values align with our own, and we are pleased to say this has now been achieved.
Our care team is proud of the compassionate, person-centred care they provide, building positive relationships to ensure residents' needs and choices are respected. We now have a strong, stable management team and are proud to have recently been rated Good by the CQC in all areas, reflecting the significant improvements made.
We are sorry that your experience did not meet expectations at the time and would have welcomed the opportunity to discuss your concerns. You are always welcome to visit Downs House again or attend one of our open days to see the improvements made. We wish you all the best.

A family atmosphere is at the heart of Stroud House with residents first and foremost from the friendly approach of management and staff to residents and visiting family and friends. Everything is done to make you feel at home. Music, entertainment and activities are encouraged with either professionals
or staff joining in. Staff are an important part of the home from the kitchen, carers and management all care and go the extra mile for their Stroud family getting to know personalities, likes and dislikes weather joining into the tick of things or just preferring a quiet spot, all are welcome.

The Stroud House staff have been caring for my father since he was diagnosed with dementia and we were advised by health professionals that he would need residential care.
The management and staff at Stroud House are caring and helpful and are always quick to inform family of any care needs or issues
as they arise. They are always very happy to provide updates on-ongoing care which is very comforting for the family. Stroud House has its roots as a family run business and still maintains that feel with its friendly and caring atmosphere.

Your feedback reminds us why we do what we do every day thank you for sharing this.

My mother was offered a place at Stroud House following a prolonged hospital stay with dementia. My first impression was, that the home was 'a little tired'. Since mum has been at Stroud House (April '25) a significant amount of upgrading has been completed, this has been undertaken with the least amount
of disturbance to the residents & day to day running of the home. It, along with, the garden look great.
The staff are incredible, so caring, it is obvious that they take the time to learn as much as possible about residents, which leads to residents being involved in activities that they enjoy, but the team does encourage residents to try & hopefully enjoy all activities, as "every day is different"
Stroud House is very well led, the enthusiasm demonstrated by management filters down through the whole team. Stroud House describe themselves as a 'family' and truly this is evident in all they do, relatives can be actively involved in all activities.
My mum is thriving at Stroud House
Reply from Samantha Oliver, Home Manager at Stroud HouseCarol, your words have truly touched us all. It means so much to know that the care, love and effort our team put in each day are making such a difference for your mum and for your family. We are so proud to see how well she is doing and how she is thriving here with us. At Stroud House we really do see ourselves as one family, and your mum is such a valued part of that. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your trust, for letting us share in her life, and for your continued support.

I can't recommend Stroud House enough. Mum was always resistant to going into care but her needs were becoming more challenging and dad wasn't well enough to continue caring for her. Stroud House were supportive and welcoming right from the start and eventually, with patience and understanding from
Sam and her team, mum settled into her new home. There have been ups and downs along the way with mums health and needs, but the staff have always been quick to respond and always keep me informed.
The home has recently undergone a refresh of decor and it's a lovely, welcoming space for the residents and their visitors. There are lots of activities provided, and opportunities to get out and about and families are always welcome to join in. All the staff welcome us by name, with lovely smiles and offers of tea or coffee which is always nice, especially as mum and I used to enjoy going for coffee and cake together.
Reply from Samantha Oliver, Home Manager at Stroud HouseThank you so much for your kind words. I know how difficult those first steps into care can be, and I'm so glad that, with time and support, your mum has been able to settle here at Stroud House. It's lovely to hear that you feel welcomed when you visit - those coffee and cake moments are special, and I'm so pleased we can help you keep enjoying them together. Your message really means a lot, and I'll make sure the whole team hears it. Xx

My mother moved to Stroud House mid-July and I've been pleasantly surprised at how well she has settled. She really was resistant to the move from her own home, but her dementia was getting worse and she wasn't looking after herself properly. The staff have been very caring and kind with her and Mum
says she is very well looked after and enjoys the activities and the meals. It's such a relief to know someone is there for her at all times.
Reply from Samantha Oliver, Home Manager at Stroud HouseThank you so much for your kind words. We are really pleased to hear that your mum has settled in well at Stroud House, especially after such a big move. It's lovely to know that she is enjoying the meals and activities, and that she feels well cared for by the team. We understand how difficult the transition can be, both for residents and their families, so it's wonderful to know that you feel reassured she is safe and supported.

Over all I'm very happy with the care provided for my mother, most of the time she is happy, content, especially when entertainment us provided, dancing and singing brings out the best in her. Food is very good. All the cakes provided. The only thing I would say needs improvement is the security, my
mother is a very determined lady at times, when she get's upset and confused, wanting to go home. I know it's the dementia talking or maybe extra checks on her when she is like this.

I continue to be incredibly impressed by the activities and attention to detail that is provided in the care for the residents of Stroud House. It's wonderful to see all the residents engaged in such a full activities programme, creating new memories and continuing to maintain cognitive and physical
functions. My Father is thriving, being overseas it is lovely to see everyone's antics on their social media feeds. The staff go above and beyond for residents and their families.

A small homely dementia care home with a great atmosphere that treats its residents with care and affection. The management is very dynamic, putting on events, like the August 1st summer fare and has regular musicians and others visiting to entertain the residents. Visiting family members are always
warmly welcomed and encouraged to participate in events. The house was recently renovated, particularly in the communal areas and looks great. This communal area looks out onto a well-tended garden that is particularly nice in spring and summer.
We feel lucky to have managed to get a place at Stroud House, which is very convenient for one of our siblings that lives in Petersfield.
Reply from Samantha Oliver, Home Manager at Stroud HouseThank you so much for taking the time to share your wonderful feedback. We're delighted to hear that the "homely" and warm atmosphere you described reflects how much love and care we aim to foster here. Our team works hard to make the home feel vibrant and welcoming from the recent renovations in our communal areas to hosting lively events like our Summer Fair on August 1st, as well as arranging regular musical visits and family activities. We're thrilled that these efforts are appreciated and help create a sense of community for residents and their families. It's also gratifying to hear that our communal space and the overlooking garden bring additional comfort and beauty, especially in the warmer months. We're proud of the environment we've cultivated and thankful for your recognition of it.I'll be sure to share your kind words with the rest of the team, they'll be encouraged to hear how much their care and dedication matter.
