Considering this care home charges £4,600 a month the cleanliness and condition of my Fathers room and bed sheets were a disgrace. No bin in the room, fridge never turned on...ever... his clothes went missing, often I found him in other people's clothes and underwear and I have lost count the amount
of times he had no socks on! We were told by the Manager that if his dementia got worse he would always have a home there and they would never move him, absolute lies. Our Father fell in their care, thus having to have a partial hip replacement and ended up in Hospital. We were then informed by email by the manager to collect his things and find him another home as they don't have the facilities to look after him since his fall. As a family we have been let down by Colliers Croft, not by the staff but by the management system. Our Father isn't aware he will be moving to a new home, we are praying that this will not be too upsetting for him.

Reply from Alison Brownbill, Operations Director at Colliers Croft

Please allow me to apologise unreservedly for the concerns you've raised. We haven't performed to the standards we set and I will address this with the relevant people. Unfortunately I cannot agree that the Manager said your father would have a home for life. Whilst that is what we hope, we aren't set up to care for residents whose condition deteriorates e.g. very high physical needs etc. When that presents we speak to relevant people e.g. relatives, social workers and hospital assessors who may advise that the resident be transferred to a nursing home that will be more suited to provide specialised nursing care and keep the person safe. On this occasion attempts were made to contact your brother by phone following an assessment from the hospital assessor. When these attempts failed, an email conversation followed and subsequently the hospital assessment was sent to your sister. I have tried to contact you today to discuss further. If you wish to discuss further please contact me.

On entering the premises we were greeted by a warm and friendly lady. We came to visit my auntie with my terminally ill mother. She went above and beyond to help me and my sister navigate, my now wheelchair bound mother. She directed us to my auntie with compassion and empathy This may be the last time
that the sisters will be together. At the end of the visit, this lovely lady appeared again chatting to my auntie and mother like she knew them. Can't thank her enough for this heart warming
visit. Shes a credit to you. Many thanks

Colliers Croft at Haydock is a fantastic care home for many, many reasons. All of the staff must be praised: the carers; the managers; the cleaners and laundry staff; the reception; the kitchen staff; and maintenance man. All of the carers are very friendly and are there for my dad in so many ways.
They have gone out of their way to settle him in and understand his needs. His meals are specially prepared for his swallowing needs and the food looks delicious. Colliers is always clean, and being kept clean constantly I might add. There are many activities for the residents. The recent gala day was a great success for residents and their families thanks to the hard work of the staff. There is a lovely family feel at Colliers, so that from the minute you enter, to leaving, you feel very welcome - like it's your own home. My dad is very happy there as he knows he has 24 care and support. Colliers Croft gives high quality care to its residents in luxury surroundings. Thank you all so much!!

A Heartbreaking Experience at Colliers Croft Care Home
Making the decision to place our dad in a care home was incredibly difficult, but we were reassured by the manager and staff that it would be the right choice for his dignity and well-being. Unfortunately, the last six months of his care at Colliers
Croft turned into a nightmare for both him and our family due to severe neglect. He lost over 2 stone in weight due to being confined to bed for a six weeks period due to the unavailability of lifting aids. This lack of equipment delayed necessary movement and care when this should have been provided in a timely manner. As a result, we had no choice but to transfer him to a nursing home because of his rapid deterioration. We have since submitted formal complaints to the CQC St Helens, safeguarding authorities, and quality regulators regarding the unacceptable conditions and mismanagement we witnessed.
Given our experience, we cannot recommend this care home to anyone's loved ones.

Reply from ALISON Brownbill, Operations DIrector at Colliers Croft

We always aim to provide the most individualised care possible. However, we are a residential care home and do not have nurses on staff. We assess referrals to ensure we can meet the individuals needs. Sometimes, a residents condition can deteriorate faster than expected, and they then require nursing care. When that happens, we contact the Local Authority, who begin the process of arranging a move to a nursing home. We have no control over the speed of this transfer, which is managed entirely by the Local Authority and can, regrettably, take months. There are times we may not meet the high standards we set for ourselves. When this happens, we apologise and use the feedback to make necessary improvements. We understand how upsetting the situation with Mr Ss father has been for him and his family. We offer our sincere apologies to Mr S and his family and genuinely wish them all the best for the future. This care home has a special work team, over the three years my father has been here, there has been staff changes, I feel they now have it right, the event team are brilliant and encourage my dad to participate in games quizzes etc. The care staff are friendly and very caring and go above and beyond
to ensure that the residents are looked after. My dad always says to me 'it's lovely here, they look after me', that says it all for me and my family, it was a hard decision to put Dad into care but so right for my dad, he has thrived with the company and care.

Mum has been a resident here for 16 months.
Her room is warm, clean, comfortable and safe. The home itself is bright and airy with pleasant dining and lounge facilities as well as quiet rooms. The staff are responsive to all her needs and assist with all aspects of daily living. I have found all staff
members to be friendly, responsive and supportive - which gives me great comfort. There is easy and open communication with everyone from the manager to reception. The senior carers provide regular updates and will rapidly respond to any concerns or care needs. Weekly ward rounds are provided by the local GP practice which offers a high standard of medical care, fully supported and implemented by the care home staff. Weekly hairdressing and monthly podiatry are also available. Although Mum doesn't choose to join in with activities, there are several options available. Mum's only complaint is the quality of food; this has been addressed by direct communication with the kitchen staff.

Dad was admitted to Damfield Gardens in January and had settled in within a couple of weeks. Having the same staff on Dad's floor is comforting for both

My Mum has been a member of the Damfield Gardens family for almost 4 years now and, in that time, I have nothing but praise for the care she has received from the outstanding staff. This year has been particularly difficult as serious health issues have made it impossible for me to visit my mother but
the staff at Damfield Gardens have been a lifeline. Not only have they kept me updated on how my Mum's doing but I have also received several calls checking up to see how I am! Knowing that my Mum is in such a loving environment where her best interests are always put first, has made it possible for me to concentrate on my own recovery. I am looking forward to going to visit her shortly for her 99th birthday!

At the recent Summer Fayre, I was disappointed to see my mother sitting in the lounge, which can be stuffy, (yes I know the temperature is always warm), but I was hoping to see her outside enjoying the fresh air in the garden. If I hadn't visited that day I honestly believe she would not have got out.
She particularly enjoys live music entertainment. Whilst I understand that there are not enough carers/staff, to take residents on a one-to-one basis, I believe she could have been taken out if for a short time.

Reply from ALISON Brownbill, Operations Director at Damfield Gardens

Thank you for your feedback. Our aim was to ensure that all residents had the chance to attend our Summer Fayre. To make this possible, we brought in additional staff who, dressed in their own clothes and assisted in helping residents in and out. We also extended invitations to families and friends to join their loved ones at the event. Since residents could not be left unaccompanied, we had to organise their participation in small groups. Additionally, some residents preferred to remain inside, so we ensured that there was sufficient staff available within the home. I can assure you that every resident was given the opportunity to attend the fayre that day. Kindest regards

The care home itself was clean, bright, and airy, it was the personal hygiene that did it for me. When we went to look around we were told they had the odd days out and activities, but I saw none of this. My husband was looking very neglected and smelly. I was told he would not go in the shower, I personally
showered him myself on 2 occasions. One of the staff told me my husband packed his suitcase after the evening meal every night and walked around with it. I immediately brought it home with me one evening he was sitting in the corridor with his meal in front of him. He had been sitting there for an hour. I received a phone call at 7 AM to inform me there had been an incident at 1:30 that morning, but he was fine, the nurses had been out and dressed his wound, and he had cut his arm. She described in detail how it happened and I would like to know how she knew this as my husband was in his bedroom and she was down the corridor in her office. They put my husband on their doctor's list, I only found out after about 2 weeks as I rang our doctor to book for a blood test for him as he has had cancer and is still being monitored but was unable to do this as he had been removed from our doctor's list. I contacted the cancer team and they sorted it for him and told your people they had no right to do this.
I informed his social worker who in turn informed the council who will be looking into my complaint. The care home knew I was very upset and angry the way my husband was looked after. It goes without saying I would never recommend Colliers Croft.

Reply from Alison Brownbill, Operations Director at Colliers Croft

We were upset when we read your review and apologise unreservedly for the upset we have caused. I have spoken with the registered manager and all relevant staff about your complaint and gone through this with them point by point. We have had staff meetings with all relevant staff where it has been made very clear to them that the issues you describe are unacceptable and certainly do not reflect the high standards that we aspire to. The staff member who spoke to you about your husband's accident obtained this information from a staff member who was in the vicinity when it occurred. We requested an appointment from your husband's GP, but as he was outside of their area, they were unable to visit. As he was on respite care with us we don't know why he was removed from their list. Once again, please accept our apologies. Thank you for your complaint - this will be used as a way of monitoring where and why we have fallen short and enable us to continuously improve our standards.

Our Grandad was cared for at Collier's for almost 12 months until he passed away in May at the age of 92. Colliers was always our first choice after looking at many homes in the area. He went on the waiting list and when we got the call for a space being available we jumped at the chance. He had never
settled elsewhere but did immediately so here. It was home! When Grandad was moving in, we were told they weren't just there to care for him, but for us as a family. This is so true. All the staff on Floor 1 supported us just as much as Grandad. Kept us informed along the way and hugged us when things got tough. The team and residents are like a family and this shows in the level of care they provide. Not just the carers, but this extends to the entertainment team, the cleaners, cooks, maintenance - everyone.
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making this last year the best it could be for Grandad.

Review of

Damfield Gardens

from A S (Daughter of Resident) published on 4 April 2024
Overall Experience  Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5

Mum became a resident at Damfield Gardens in the summer of 2023. After initially having a previous bad experience at a different nursing home, as a family we had our concerns over Mum's placement at Damfield Gardens. Mum had a couple of trigger points for her anxiety which were identified by the staff,
and positive measures were put into place quickly and efficiently to ensure that she settled well. The staff have been brilliant with Mum, she is happy, well cared for, and in a safe environment. She has enjoyed lots of activities that regularly take place. Knowing that Mum is in such good hands has given us enormous reassurance and peace of mind.

Reply from Kishan Patel, Business Development Manager at Damfield Gardens

Thank you so much for your kind words, we're delighted your mum and is now settled and happy. Your compliments will be passed onto the team at Damfield Gardens, I'm sure they will make their day!
