My mother-in-law has been in Osborne Lodge for 7 months and during that time she has been treated with kindness and consideration. She loves her room and enjoys the meals very much.
Reply from Beverly Harris, Area Manager at Osborne Lodge Rest Home

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review and have such high praise for our home, I will pass this on to all the carers, it really is appreciated and we are so happy that your mother- in-law has been treated with kindness and consideration. We do note the lower score for activities and our excellent lead activities co Ordinator is on maternity leave currently and we have two new staff on activities who are working hard to meet the expectations, we are doing all we can to ensure a better activities package for our residents.

I feel very disappointed with care at Osborne Lodge Rest Home, specifically end of life preparation, support and assistance in the final days of life. I regret my aunt being at Osborne Lodge for this reason alone. She did not wish to receive medical attention at end of life, which is fair enough, but
she was basically left to die alone without companionship. This is very different to the end of life care I have witnessed elsewhere. This is where Osborne Lodge needs to improve and treat residents with dignity in dying.
Reply from Beverly Harris, Area Manager at Osborne Lodge Rest Home

We were so sorry to read how you feel around the care of your aunt at the end of her life. We are reaching out to you personally to discuss this, however, we would like to address what you have written as we do feel that our end of life care is not as described. Your aunt was seen by her GP, the frailty team, nurse and had an end of life care plan in place as well as anticipatory medication, if needed. As a family you were kept updated regularly and visited regularly, indeed family were with her until late in the evening just before she passed away. No treatment was withdrawn, food and fluid and care were offered and given regularly up until the end. You visited your aunt after receiving the call and personally thanked and hugged staff for their care and support. We feel we did appropriately care for your aunt at the end of her life, as her wishes depicted, she died peacefully in her home, with family visiting and staff supporting her throughout, with her pain controlled.

Everything was good and the staff very pleasant. Dirty table (sides) and care not taken of plants.
Reply from Beverly Harris, Area Manager at Osborne Lodge Rest Home

Dear Jean,
Thank you for taking the time to post a review of our care home, we are very happy to hear you and your aunt are happy with everything, especially the staff, this is so important.
We were disappointed to learn that you found a table was not cleaned to the expected standard. We have a great domestic team who work very hard to keep the home clean at all times, but obviously, this was missed and we apologise for that. We will endeavour to not let this happen again.

We placed Mum at Osbourne Lodge as her Vascular Dementia has made it unsafe for her to be on her own. The management team and staff have all been very friendly and helpful in getting Mum to settle into her new surroundings. The atmosphere is bright and friendly compared to many other care homes which
is very important to us. This has been and continues to be a very positive experience and has taken a lot of the worry away from the family knowing that Mum is being properly looked after. As far as we can tell the food is prepared with fresh ingredients and served at regular times, certainly very few complaints from Mum. They take care to make sure Mum has the correct medication at the correct time and stays hydrated. The weekly visit to the home by a nurse is also reassuring. It is good to know that there are planned activities and a weekly bus trip for the residents. Overall we are very pleased with care Mum is receiving. Thank You.

My mother's health was fading to remain at home alone. We moved her into Osborne Lodge for her safety and care. This is the best decision we could have made. Mum has settled in really well, making new friends. The manager and staff are always so welcoming and make time to talk and update us regarding
Mum. Mum really enjoys the activities and the trips out in the minibus. She also enjoys the meals, trying food that she would not have eaten at home, on her own! I would like to say a big thank you to all the staff at Osborne Lodge on behalf of Mum and all the family.

My mum had to move into a care home after a stay in the hospital when it became clear she would no longer be able to cope in her own home. The manager of Osborne Lodge made me feel confident that the home would be ideal for her, and he worked tirelessly to ensure a smooth transition. His enthusiasm
and kindness, combined with the welcoming, friendly staff, have ensured that Mum has settled in well. She is joining in the many varied activities, encouraged by the carers and happily chats to me about what she had done. She enjoys the food and the changing menu and talks about her favourite meals. The home has a welcoming atmosphere and is kept clean, and I am delighted to see Mum so content. We can visit whenever we wish, and any queries are quickly responded to. Thank you to everyone at Osbourne Lodge.

Staff provided as much information as possible and answered all questions at initial visit. Since Mum became a resident nothing has been too much trouble. The family have been kept updated on any issues. There is always a staff member to speak to on the phone or in person with good knowledge of Mum.
The whole family is extremely happy with the excellent care and attention provided.

The manager and his team have looked after my mother for the last year. They have become like family, very caring, friendly and considerate of both my mum and my needs, especially during a very difficult time for Covid. They cannot be faulted. His enthusiasm as manager is infectious, and all the team
are ready with a smile and do everything they can to help. My mother has been in three care homes for short visits previously, none compare to this lovely friendly family home.

My initial experience is the care for my father has been very supportive, caring and thoughtful. He is a new resident who has been treated with great consideration and sensitivity with what is an incredible change of scene, bearing in mind he was at his last residence for 56-years! I cannot thank Osborne Lodge enough for helping me to get my elderly mum out of hospital following a fall she had at our home on the 8th October 2020, and subsequently caring for her every need since. She fractured her kneecap and dislocated her hip resulting in two operations leaving her immobile and
in need of 24-hour care and rehabilitation mobilisation. The managers liaised with the hospital team and coordinated her discharge within two days. Since then they have organised absolutely everything including outpatient visits (with a carer going with her as I’m not allowed due to Lockdown) every fortnight to see her surgeon, working with the community occupational therapists ensuring Mum is safe and progressing according to plan; they have literally organised, arranged and done everything for her (and me). The care and attention to detail is faultless, from personal care to her dietary needs. This experience has completely opened my eyes, Mum and I are so grateful.

I have found the staff at Osborne Lodge to be communicative, polite and reasonably attentive. The home is clean and today, and as far as I can tell, is managed well. From what I have seen, food quality is good and is routinely served on time. The position of Osborne Lodge is very good being a very short
distance from the shopping centre, and there is street parking directly outside where I have never failed to park. The cost of being a resident is very fair by comparison to other care homes that claim 5* treatment but may not achieve it.

The welcome and friendliness of all the staff members that I met immediately put me and my mum at ease at a very difficult time for both of us.
Her room was very clean and comfortable and beautifully decorated in pale grey and lemon, with patio doors onto a courtyard garden. Mum had her own little
area with a bistro table and chairs and spent a lot of her time chatting in the garden.
She has early onset dementia and was quite anxious and tearful for a day or so but soon settled in and joined in various activities on offer. In the main lounge area, she was joining in with indoor croquet, chatting to several other ladies and cuddling the tiny resident puppy! Osborne Lodge has a lovely atmosphere and nothing was too much trouble for the staff.
The standard of care and cleanliness was excellent and mum said the food was very good indeed. I was very happy to entrust the care of my mum to Osborne Lodge and would highly recommend it.

My mother went to Osborne Lodge Rest Home for one week whilst we were on holiday. She was well looked after, had a lovely room upstairs in the new wing, she didn't join in with any activities but would have if stayed longer. We took her there as my mother-in-law lives there as well and is happy. My
mother was impressed with the standards of the place, so maybe in the future could be a permanent thing for her.

My mother went into Osborne Lodge March 2018 for a 2-week "holiday" within the 2 weeks she decided to stay. It took her 2-3 months to settle properly, she is happy there and only a 5-minute drive from us. She gets on well with all the staff. She doesn't always join in with activities she has a lovely
room on the ground floor with a nice outlook, seeing people come and go.

With all the bad media regarding care homes, I was nervous about my mother moving into one. I can honestly say my mind is at peace now as I have found the perfect home for her at Osbourne Lodge. Being a small home, it feels very warm and friendly. She loves all the home-cooked food and I enjoy their
fresh cakes when I visit her. The staff treat her with dignity and respect and are a cheerful bunch.

Current Review Score: 8.3 (8.318)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.3 (8.318) out of 10 for Osborne Lodge Rest Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.1 out of 5 from 6 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.2 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.083 for Osborne Lodge Rest Home is calculated as follows: ( (33 Excellents x 5) + (24 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) + (12 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 72 Ratings = 4.083
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.235 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Osborne Lodge Rest Home is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.5
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 34 registered maximum number of service users is 6.8. 5 Positive Reviews ÷ 6.8 = 0.735
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Deputy Manager Joined: 2006

My name is Lisa, and I have worked at Osborne Lodge for the past 17 years. I started as a cleaner and enjoyed working in the home so much that I began to train and progress to become a carer, then a senior carer, head of care and then to deputy manager, making care my career.

I have loved every moment of my career, especially interacting with the residents and ensuring they are safe, happy and content. With every story and life history of our residents, I became more passionate and wanted to give the residents the best that I could. Passing on knowledge to new staff is another passion. Every day, I learn more than I thought possible.

My nan was my inspiration for my choice of career. She was a fantastic lady who taught me how to respect others, and I believe she is the reason for my caring nature. My nan passed on some lovely quotes, and this one always stuck in my mind: "enjoy the little things in life, for one day you may look back and realise they were the biggest" This is how I feel about care, even the smallest thing you can do for someone is the biggest thing for them.

I enjoy attending every training session and am working my way through level 5 in care management.

Outside work, I enjoy beach walks, spending time with my friends, good food and going to the gym.
