Highfield House is a dementia-friendly care home in Shanklin, rated Outstanding by the CQC (February 2021). It combines skilled care with everyday kindness, giving families reassurance and residents a calm, welcoming place to live.

The staff get to know each person as an individual. Care is shaped around health needs as well as the little things that make life comfortable, like a favourite meal, a morning routine, or familiar belongings in a room.

Inspectors praised Highfield House for its caring approach, its responsiveness and its leadership. Families often say the same, noticing the friendly atmosphere and the way staff are attentive without being overbearing.

Life at the home is relaxed and sociable. Meals are cooked on site with fresh produce, and there are regular activities such as music, crafts and seasonal events. Residents also enjoy trips to the library or the seafront, while the dementia-friendly garden offers a safe and pleasant spot for fresh air or a chat with visitors.

Highfield House is not just a care home. It is a small community built on trust and compassion, where residents are looked after with both competence and kindness every day.

Visits are straightforward to arrange and usually available within the week. Call to find a time that suits.

This is to thank all the staff for your loving care that does not go unnoticed. During a recent visit I was warmed by the way in which you interact with the residents, showing a great understanding of each individual. I saw a staff member reassure a resident, another chatting with a resident and taking
part in an activity. I noticed how a staff member lowered herself to be at eye level with a resident to chat to her and ensure she was ok and provide reassurance. Another member talking very calmly and in a loving way to a resident providing an explanation of what was happening.
Then there was humour and laughter with another resident, and senior staff checking that everything that needed doing was being done. Great communication between the staff members and a very organised and calm environment. The chef cooked some great meals and cleaners also chatted to residents in passing whilst cleaning areas in the home. A staff member taking someone out for a walk as they wished to go out.
I have seen fantastic things at the home.
Each and every staff member makes a difference to people's lives - they are brilliant at what they do.
A huge thank you to all the staff. We are lucky to have you looking after our loved ones.
Reply from Ian Bennett, Managing Director at Highfield HouseThank you so much for taking the time to share this thoughtful and detailed review.
Your words mean a great deal to our whole team. The moments you noticed - taking time to reassure, sharing laughter, speaking calmly, getting down to eye level, and supporting people to do the things that matter to them - are exactly what we strive for every day. It's heartening to know that this care, kindness and teamwork are felt and seen.
We're also grateful that you recognised the wider team, from our chef and housekeeping staff to senior colleagues. Everyone plays a part in creating a calm, warm environment that truly feels like family.
Thank you for your trust and for such generous appreciation. We are very proud of our team and feel privileged to care for your loved ones.

Highfield House provides the most wonderful care for my husband. The staff are, without exception, caring, kind and loving when it comes to attending to my husband's every need
Their insistence on treating him just the same as a a respected guest is amazing. He is treated with utmost respect at all
times and the overwhelming feeling in the home is that of love and care for all the residents as well as constant respect and suppprt for the resident's family and loved ones He has every need met at Highfield House.

Everyone at Highfield is so lovely! The manager and the team really care for Mum and she is happy and settled here. Letting someone else care for her was the hardest decision ever, but they are relaxed and so supportive, so she is content. We can visit when we want and her things make her room her space.
A great plus is the garden too, which she can use whenever she feels like it.

My mum went into Highfield House in February for daycare then became a permanent resident in April. The staff are wonderful with her and also me as I am finding it very tough to see my mum like this. The staff are always so understanding and nothing is too much trouble for them. I really cannot fault
any aspect of Highfield and know my mum is lucky to be in their care.

Sadly my husband had a fall at home which resulted in him breaking his hip.
With having dementia this became increasingly difficult for us as a family to support his needs and was taking its toll on my own health and well-being.
Looking for the right place I like many others was upset to see my husband
go into a home but making contact with the organisation and Highfield that much-needed help and support was there and to this day still is.
We as a family can not thank the manager enough for going above and beyond to support us and for that we are extremely grateful.
The second you walk in the door you are greeted with a smile and it's a pleasure to see the passion and desire from the staff to make a difference to the residents.
It's nice to see the residents encouraged to be involved in so many activities and made to feel safe and comfortable in their surroundings.
So thank you to the manager and her management team plus all the carers for truly being the best it's appreciated.

Mum is high maintenance. I was very sceptical at first as she was being sent here, I was not happy at all, and let social services know that, as she had been moved twice and caused her significant stress. The manager is very good, well superb actually. I met Mum here and was very impressed, staff are
attentive and patient and bonded with Mum very quickly. Anyone who knows just how stressful this type of situation is can relate, it was a bit of weight off my shoulders knowing she was being looked after properly, as the one she was sent to before was absolutely rubbish. I visit Mum every week and see for myself just how much of a pain she is but staff take it in their stride, and fair play to them. Mum is well looked after and loves dogs. I purchased her a dementia dog which she loved, and every time I visit she has another toy dog, if you see a woman with a trolley of dogs, that's her. Food appears very good, she is vegetarian and this is catered for.

My Father arrived at the home terminally ill. His room was immaculate and the staff all looked very professional in the various colour polo shirts. The staff were very approachable and could easily answer all the questions we asked as a family. Even though I live 180 miles away I never felt like a burden
when calling by phone. My Father passed away after three weeks of great care. If asked to describe the home in one word based on what we encountered it would be 'brilliant', although as I write that it may be a little lower than I felt. Thank you.

Current Review Score: 9.5 (9.521)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.521) out of 10 for Highfield House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 6 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.6 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.971 for Highfield House is calculated as follows: ( (68 Excellents x 5) + (2 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 70 Ratings = 4.971
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.55 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Highfield House is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 = 3.55
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 20 registered maximum number of service users is 4, which has been reached with 6 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
