My father-in-law was accepted for an initial 6-week trial period in December 2022. Throughout the period of assessment and acceptance, communication with Old Charlton House was very good and has remained so. Any questions and requirements of us were prompt and with the relevant family member, by the
means previously agreed. My father-in-law's overall care has relieved us, as a family, of many aspects of the care he had previously received when he was still at home. The care, therefore, goes wider than just to the resident.
We are grateful to the staff who care for my father-in-law on a day-to-day basis and provide for all his dementia needs, physical needs and foibles. We feel we are very blessed to have been offered the place for him and hope that his place will become a permanent one.

From the initial contact with Old Charlton House till now, we know we made the right choice of care for our dad. The fact that he settled so well and continues to thrive is a testament to the care they provide in ensuring his needs are met. Staff are welcoming, caring, and kind both to Dad and us, his
family. They demonstrate compassion and patience in challenging times. The management is friendly and professional in their approach, keeping us informed of all aspects of his care. We work together and feel heard and respected in the decisions made.

I have always been very impressed with how Charlton is run. I have always found the management to be effective and have been extremely helpful in dealing with administrative issues which I have found very challenging at times. I am always informed of any concerns about my grandmother's health and
emotional
wellbeing. The building and grounds are clean and maintained to a very high standard. I am
delighted with the kindness and caring shown to my grandmother by everyone. As mentioned my
grandmother always loves the food and I have always been impressed at how flexible the kitchen are to meet the needs of our family as well as my grandmother. The way everyone from management to carer has dealt with the COVID situation has been absolutely outstanding with regular updates and great care taken for all involved. As a result, the family have recommended Old Charlton on many occasions.

The treatment Mum received at Old Charlton House was beyond exceptional. We live in America and could only visit Mum a few times a year. I’m not sure what we would have done without Charlton House. They took care of her with compassion that always went above and beyond. She was there for five years,
and in the last three years, she was bed bound. Each and every staff member was wonderful, tending to all of her needs, both emotional and physical with unflagging love and care. They sang to her and with her, shared tears with us, and celebrated her birthday with cake and candles when we could not be there. There is no way to describe how thankful we are to the entire staff for giving us such peace of mind knowing that she was being taken care of with such heartfelt compassion. They became like family to us. Since we could not be there at the end, they made sure she was not alone and held her hand to the end. We are and will be forever grateful for the love and support they showed.

I am contact for my friend who has been a resident in Old Charlton House for 2 years. I make regular visits and have never had cause to doubt the quality of care he receives, especially as his Dementia has increased. The staff are well trained, caring and friendly. Food is very good and all areas very
clean. A lovely place for the elderly.

It's never nice to have to put your parents into care, but Old Charlton House really puts my mind at ease with the care they give my father. The staff are very patient with him as he can be a bit difficult at times. The staff are all very friendly and always at hand and helpful to discuss any issues
that arise.

My mum has been a resident at Old Charlton House for 2 and a half years. During that time, her mental and physical health has deteriorated. At every change, the staff at Old Charlton have adapted to her greater needs with empathy and kindness. They are unfailingly cheerful and despite mum's challenging
demeanour, they remain calm, patient and respectful.
I have nothing but praise for the whole team - from management down.

Constant and continuous updating of care for mum who began her stay in poor health (9 weeks on a stroke ward, lost substantial weight, no end diagnosis by hospital). The manager picked up straight away on various health issues needing to be addressed, she was let down by the district nurse system but
kept going until the issue was finally addressed.
Very welcoming staff whenever we attend, regular meals and high standard (mum's weight now being monitored) and I am always aware of maintenance issues being addressed promptly (unlike previous care home) with the well-meaning owner. Mum would like to go home, however, while at this home, my sisters and I are very pleased with mum's care and we don't have to worry about the care she is receiving. Thank you very much.

Old Charlton House is primarily a residential home, however, at a time when my mum has become incapacitated by Alzheimer's disease they have beyond a residential home. They truly care for my mym and will not be asking me to mover her. I am truly grateful for the amazing care they give her.

Since mum moved from the mainland 6 months ago, having experienced very poor care from community carers, both her physical and emotional wellbeing have improved well beyond my expectations.
Without a doubt, this is due to the excellent physical care she has received from the wonderful staff team. Care
is delivered with extraordinary kindness and cheerfulness. As a result of the high standard of care, the family now have peace of mind for which I thank the team.

I cannot thank Old Charlton enough for the kindness that I personally witnessed on a number of occasions when I visited my Father by the nursing/care assistant team and the managerial staff. It was very clear and evident to me of the fantastic /overwhelming care the home provided him in the last period
of his life.
When my Father was in the hospital all he spoke about was of returning to his beloved nursing home in the daily visits that I saw him.
Even in the last few days of his life after the 2nd discharge from hospital when he was suffering the team still had their calming influence and compassion for him.
I noticed that on the front door of the care home there are a number of benchmarks that the home is ranked against. The general rating was that they were GOOD.
I don’t know the full criteria for these and how they are established but from both mine and my late father’s perspective, I believe the home is OUTSTANDING and would fully recommend it to take care of their loved ones.

My father has been a resident of Old Charlton House, for over 3 years. During this time his dementia has worsened considerably and he has developed several medical problems, The care and attention he has received from the staff has been wonderful. The carers are kind, gentle and respectful and the management
team has been superb in advising and helping us through difficult times, My husband and I would not hesitate to recommend Old Charlton House to anyone.

My cousin who is suffering from immobility and dementia seems happy enough with her situation at Old Charlton and always replies positively when asked about her life there.
She enjoys joining in the activities in the afternoon and is quite happy to listen to classical music in her room at the time.
Nothing is too much trouble for the staff.
The Old Charlton has a most relaxed and homely atmosphere.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.879) out of 10 for Old Charlton House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 16 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.979 for Old Charlton House is calculated as follows: ( (188 Excellents x 5) + (4 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 192 Ratings = 4.979
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Old Charlton House is based on 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 32 registered maximum number of service users is 6.4, which has been reached with 16 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
