Overview

The Review Score of 9.1 (maximum of 10) for St Helier's Residential Hotel is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 22 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for St Helier's Residential Hotel in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.4 out of 5 from 4 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

Detailed Breakdown

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.644 for St Helier's Residential Hotel is calculated as follows: ( (189 Excellents x 5) + (58 Goods x 4) + (15 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 264 Ratings = 4.644

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 4.417 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Helier's Residential Hotel is based on 4 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 3.75

    2. Target of 6 positive Reviews (30 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 4 Reviews ÷ 6 Target = 0.667

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

9.1 St Helier's Residential Hotel has a Review Score of 9.1 (9.061) from 22 Reviews

My mother (97 years old) moved to St Helier's in December 2017. Since her move, she has had the most wonderful experience, due to the friendly caring and supportive staff. Excellent food and help in all areas of her needs. Also, nice to see the directors are very aware of all day to day goings on, in a personal way.

Anna Parry, Registered Manager at St Helier's Residential Hotel responded to this review on 17 Jan 2018:

Thank you for your review and choosing St Heliers for your mother.

At the age of 99 and a half, and following a series of falls, our mother had to leave her home and moved into a room at St Heliers. She found the loss of her independence difficult to adjust to initially but relatively quickly she began to appreciate her room as a safe place to be, and the staff as friends. She recently passed away aged 100 and we, her immediate family, have the greatest admiration of and gratitude to the staff and management of St Heliers for the way they cared for her over the 6 months she was there. This was particularly true as she neared her end when she required more intensive care and medication. St Heliers has a very close link with the local surgery and doctors or district nurses were promptly available when required. As relations, we were always welcomed and kept informed.

The care given to my aunt was amazing. She did so well in respite that she did not want to leave. It's an amazing retirement home and the staff are truly professional, friendly and bend over backwards to help. We will certainly use them again. Well done team! A million thanks.

My first holiday in 7 years and not knowing these residential hotels existed I was genuinely surprised at the cleanliness and the amount of staff made available to me. All day and night someone is in attendance to you, their friendliness and caring obvious from the offset. Nothing was too much trouble. Waited on hand and foot. Management were excellent and the food was various and wholesome. I would love the opportunity to visit with them again and I wouldn't hesitate in recommending St Helier's to anyone looking for a home from home experience. A truly lovely holiday.

This care home has an excellent balance of first-rate care and compassion while also having the comfortable feel of a private home. All the rooms are different so there is a suitable one for all requirement. The staff fro the owner and managers right through to the cleaners are well trained, helpful and always friendly and compassionate. The situation, half a block from the pedestrian Folkestone Leas with lawns and walking area is ideal so that residents can walk without having to brave traffic and the town centre is also within easy reach. I wholeheartedly recommend this care home.

My mother has been in St Helier's for 7 months and is extremely happy. There is a "family feel" and the staff couldn't be more caring, attentive to individual needs and friendly. It is truly a gem and I am very confident my mother received the best possible care. Staff listen and communicate well with all residents and relatives. It is very clean and the home cooked meals delicious.

Anna Parry, Registered Manager at St Helier's Residential Hotel responded to this review on 01 Mar 2017:

Thank you for giving us a lovely review.

I had a stroke last year and after the hospital, I have resided at St Helier's since the autumn. From the beginning, the atmosphere was welcoming.
It helps that the numerous staff are always cheerful and helpful. I do not need aid with washing and dressing, but it always on offer. In other words, one gets the freedom of a hotel which is backed up by a caring staff.
There is always someone on duty throughout the day and night.
My visitors are struck by the feeling they are entering a hotel, rather than a care home, they comment on the good food.
Overall I think it is the helpful and good natured attitude of the staff who have restored my confidence.

I had the misfortune to fall and injure myself, resulting in a fractured hip. I decided to stay in a respite home as my discharge from hospital. I decided that staying at St Helier's; one of the best decisions I have made. My stay here has been sixteen days of loving, compassionate, care. The young staff have been wonderful; not for just one or two days, but the whole time. Nothing has been too much trouble for them, both night and day. I feel so much stronger and confident to return home to my own premises, having spent sixteen days here. The food is amazingly good; every meal freshly cooked, and so much food!!

This is called a home. It doesn't feel like it to me. It is your house or home. We're lucky to get good food and plenty of the pudding. The carers are so nice and very helpful. I have one or more to help me. There is a homely feel where you are welcome and we have music and something to do in the afternoons. I am very happy here as I am 88. I cannot do all the things I like to do, but we have a lot of laughs with the girl carers.

Anna Parry, Manager at St Helier's Residential Hotel responded to this review on 06 Aug 2016:

Thank you for your kind words and for completing the review card.

Independent, retired, 81yr old, career in physical education. While waiting for a knee replacement, two close friends with repeat hip and bunion surgery stayed at St Helier's and enthusiastically recommended I do the same. Spoke to the manager concerned about fixing arrival and departure dates. "Not a problem" she replied. Amazing. Transferred to St Helier's three days only after surgery. Immediately she took responsibility for my muddled, worried anaesthetic mind and painful disability. Between organising hospital, warfarin, taxi and doctors appointments her supportive staff, cooks, domestics all genuinely cared for my health and peace of mind. Special, very special, waited on hand, foot and finger. So grateful. There is a loving restful recovery next at St Helier's.

Anna Parry, Manager at St Helier's Residential Hotel responded to this review on 06 Aug 2016:

Thank you for taking the time to complete the review card and your kind words. Glad you enjoyed your stay with us, more than welcome to come back for a holiday.

My mum had previously been to St Helier's Residential Hotel for a couple of short breaks so when she needed permanent care it was the obvious first choice. It's a huge step having to leave your own home but right from the start mum was made most welcome. I can honestly say that I could not fault anything- staff, managers and catering were all brilliant and nothing was too much trouble. Mum spent almost two years there and the family were relieved to know she was well looked after and were kept aware of any problems however small. A good test of anywhere is when you turn up unannounced and find all as it should be.

My father, who was terminally ill, spent his last three months at St. Heliers. He settled in very quickly with the help and support of the wonderful staff, and was provided with a safe, comfortable environment and a high level of care and medical attention. The atmosphere at St. Heliers are very friendly and cheerful. I was a constant visitor, and found the staff to be consistently kind and helpful. Residents are treated with dignity and respect and as part of a family. There are few if any, restrictions placed on them or their visitors, and no set visiting times. People come and go as they wish. My father was happier during those last months, thanks to the warmth, laughter and friendship he shared with the staff. This friendship and support was also extended to us, his family during those months, at the time of his passing and even at his funeral. Thank you all at St Heliers.

My mother had already shown the first signs of dementia that were to cause her such trauma, pain and misery. When St Helier's accepted and welcomed her as a resident in September 2008. From the first evening, after I had taken my mother down from Scotland and was allowed to stay with her all night, until her last day over six years later St Helier's proved to be the home the family, the support and the strength for both myself and my mother that was so desperately needed. The staff are wonderful, their dedication is second to none. Their care, commitment and genuine love for their residents is exemplary. Unlike the many other "homes" I looked at with their antiseptic and sterile atmosphere. St Helier's offers the kindness and security that is beyond price.

St Helier's is a home in every sense of the way. It is extremely comfortable and clean and there is a healthy bubble of a background of speaking, music, laughing. The staff are very welcoming and the residents are clearly happy. It was always clear that my friend was being very well looked after both physically and emotionally. Residents are spoken to like respected adults. It was so good to be able to take my dog in and see how he could cheer up so many of the residents. When I am old, I will certainly book myself in there.

My mother had fairly severe dementia and diabetes when she first went to St Helier's. During her 18 months there she was cared for in an understanding and patient fashion, even when her behaviour became more challenging. The staff were flexible and caring. It was good to know that they would keep her there, comfortable, until the end. The continuity of staff and their communication with me were also valued.

As my mothers dementia has progressed the staff at St Helier's have dealt sensitively with her changing needs e.g. incontinence, needing assistance with eating and showering and dressing. She usually looked well cared for and seemed to have her needs met. She started to deteriorate physically towards the end of July and was subsequently admitted to hospital owing to attentive staff (as I was away on holiday). Following further development of pneumonia for which she was treated, she was then able to return to St Helier's where the staff were so kind and bent over backwards to care for her and the family in her last days, she died peacefully.

After viewing 11 homes in the district, we decided that St Heliers was the most appropriate for my mother. It had all the facilities, she requested (including a bar). We anticipated a difficult transition from her home in South Devon to St Heliers in Kent, however due to the kindness of the staff and quality of care, this was not the case. 5 months later we are still very satisfied with the care provided by the staff.
