Quinnell House

77 Quinnell Drive, Hailsham BN27 1QN

Quinnell House is a residential home providing dementia care, situated in Hailsham, East Sussex.

The home is located within one mile of the vibrant and historic market town centre, but also benefits from being surrounded by an area of natural beauty. Hailsham is well placed for both Eastbourne and London, with train connections from Polgate station. By road, the coastal resort of Eastbourne is just eight miles, and London is 55 miles away.

The care team members at Quinnell House pride themselves on offering a highly professional care service for the elderly with dementia, with a person-centred approach that focuses on seeing the individual rather than their dementia. Quinnell House is pleased to admit people for long-term, short-term and holiday stays.

With extensive experience in crisis management, the home's manager has previously used his extensive knowledge and dynamic approach to turn care homes around following disappointing CQC reports.

At Quinnell House, staff believe they care for individuals with unique personalities, core beliefs and life experiences, who just happen to have dementia. The home has been designed and decorated to be dementia-friendly.

The home aims to provide home-from-home accommodation for 56 residents. We have incorporated a small 10-bed secure unit in our upstairs unit for residents that dementia has progressed or display challenging behaviours, it's a small homely environment. All rooms are en-suite and the home has an activity hub, and a light and sound sensory room, as well as communal lounges, and extensive landscaped sensory gardens.

Overview

The Review Score of 9.7 (maximum of 10) for Quinnell House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 22 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Quinnell House in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 11 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

Detailed Breakdown

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.733 for Quinnell House is calculated as follows: ( (191 Excellents x 5) + (65 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 258 Ratings = 4.733

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 4.982 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Quinnell House is based on 11 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 11.2 positive Reviews (56 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 11 Reviews ÷ 11.2 Target = 0.982

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

9.7 Quinnell House has a Review Score of 9.7 (9.715) from 22 Reviews

My mother has been in Quinnell House for 18 months now. In the early days, her behaviour was challenging in the extreme.
Now she is happy and well looked after.
Quinnell House has done a great job and you should be proud of yourselves.

My husband and I are very impressed with the wonderful attitude and care that all the staff give to the residents and relatives. This home is a wonderful example of what care is all about. A lot of homes could well do to follow your excellent example. Well done and thank you.

When my very elderly parents could no longer live safely independently, we were fortunate to find Quinnell House who were able to accommodate both of them. Their different needs were met (mum has vascular dementia) and both of them settled in well. The family are welcomed to visit at any time and are always pleased to find our parents content and well cared for. A comprehensive review system has been introduced to allow for the opportunity to discuss any issues with their key worker, this is very welcome and reassuring. Meals are prepared on site and the current cook works hard to provide nutritious and appetising food. Rooms are cleaned and serviced regularly and thoroughly and laundry is done daily by a core team of regular staff who have all contributed to the welfare and comfort of our parents.
There is a good core team of regular carers and when agency staff are used, we are satisfied with the standard and continuity of care.

My mother-in-law has been a resident of Quinnel House for over a year. Although there have been a few changes in management the care she has received has been consistently good. I cannot praise the carers enough. They have the most challenging job but always make time for all the residents. They treat them with such kindness, patience and with such dignity. We have always found the staff to be very approachable and even when they are over stretched they will take time to talk over any concerns the family have.

Settled in well, found mum not up in the mornings, had no breakfast, dinner lukewarm and just left. Spoke to the manager and the situation was resolved immediately. No problems since, mum always up, dressed and washed. Going down for breakfast etc.

The staff here treat everyone with utmost respect and genuine love like they were looking after one of their own. My dad is so loved and cared for, it makes the illness so much easier to bear. The home is spotless, well equipped and well run but the love and caring inside the home is second to none. We were so fortunate to find this place.

An excellent caring home. Clean and bright and the staff treat each resident with dignity. Lots of cuddles if upset, lots of patients in sometimes difficult situations. I have peace of mind that I know my Mum is being well cared for. If I ever have a problem, they sort it straight away and the biggest bonus for me is they ask how I am when feeling low.

Dad has only been at Quinnell House for almost a month but I cannot praise the staff and manager highly enough! They are genuine, respectful and so kind. It's been an incredibly hard few months but since being there, dad's state of mind and sleeping have improved considerably. It's still hard saying goodbye after each visit but we now have peace of mind knowing that dad is very well cared for and looked after. They all do an amazing job and we are incredibly grateful not only for the care they provide dad but the time they make for us also.

My father was recently admitted to Quinnell House, after a very difficult couple of months when Dementia has taken its toll. The staff at Quinnell are amazing, they are kind ,compassionate understanding and always make time to talk to you. They look after their patients but also make time for families which is so important. We had many reservations about care homes as had a horrible experience at a different home but Thank God for the manager and staff at Quinnell House. Dad is now calmer, coping a bit better and beginning to sleep. Seeing the difference that Quinnell House has made to dad reinforces that the treatment and care that he receives works. Visits are still very difficult and sometimes upsetting but the staff are really supportive and do everything they can to help.
Thank you to all staff involved in dad's care - you do a great job!

S. Duck, Manager at Quinnell House responded to this review on 16 Nov 2016:

Thank you for a lovely review, we aim to do our best to support both residents and their families.

The home was spotless and the staff were so friendly. The first thing on entering I was asked would I like a cup of tea or coffee. The patience of the nurses was unbelievable, while we were walking around (and that was for an hour) we met many of the staff and everyone made a fuss of my friend and showed me his room and the garden. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble for them. There are no words to express what a wonderful place it is.

This is a lovely home. The management and carers have been wonderful. The carers who looked after my mother at the end of her life were kind and compassionate, not only to Mum but to my whole family. I know my Mum was happy here and she was well cared for. I am eternally grateful for this.
