Cornelius House was recommended to us and we are delighted with the care the staff are giving our aunt. Moving from her home and acknowledging that she required more support was never going to be easy for her but the warmth, sensitivity, and care she has received helped her settle in swiftly. She
prefers not to join in the activities provided but is enjoying the attention and interaction with the caring staff, and most of all, the personal interest the chef has taken to understand and accommodate her dietary preferences.
We have been impressed by the management and leadership at Cornelius House, especially through the Covid period. As relatives, we receive regular updates about the care home’s activities and timely feedback on our aunt’s care.

Mum was looked after, cherished and pampered by the wonderful folk of Cornelius House Care Home. For our family, it was a real comfort that - throughout the time of Covid restrictions - Mum had such care and companionship.

Our mother came to Cornelius House in late October. We have been very impressed by the quality of the team and the care there. Integration into a new home on the last leg of life poses great challenges. But one particular member of staff and her team have demonstrated great professionalism, attention
to individual needs and warmth in all dealings with our mother and us. The team is very accessible for discussion of worries or concerns and always determined to find the solution. Highly recommended!

My mother has been at Cornelius House for just over two years. During this time I have been impressed with the staff. They are always friendly, positive and caring. They look after my mum so well in which has been a very difficult time during lockdown. The standard of cleanliness is very high and her
room is spotless. She has a ground floor room with direct access to the garden at the back, this is lovely during the warm weather. Her room is airy and during the winter months very cosy. The homemade food is lovely. Afternoon tea and a home baked cake is great. The chef will always offer different options and will accommodate meal requests. The activities are varied and entertaining, such as themed events, music, singing, quizzes, films, clothes sales, church service, past times chats, baking, crafts and exercise. The garden is well kept with seating. Cornelius House is well managed. There is a good caring ethos. Excellent team. I would highly recommend Cornelius House.

Our mother has now been at Cornelius House for two or more years and, particularly since the acquisition by the manager and the director, it has been excellent.
The fabric of the building has been improved; Covid security has been excellent. More improvements are planned.

My mum was struggling at home but adamant she wasn't going to a care home. Following another fall resulting in a broken arm, she agreed to go into Cornelius for respite for 8 weeks. At the end of 8 weeks, she concluded that the care was exemplary and she felt safe, secure and enjoyed the company of
fellow residents and staff. The cleanliness and food she could not fault. Mum has now been there for 6 months. My opinion - I agree with my mum and am delighted she is so settled.

My mother has been a resident here since January 2019. It was a big upheaval for her to leave her home in Devon to be near me and be cared for but the staff have been exceptionally sensitive to her needs and very supportive of all of us. Cornelius House is truly a home in every sense of the word and
you feel it as soon as you walk in. It is spacious with character and tastefully furnished. Mum is extremely well cared for and can only speak in positive tones about the staff. Food is home cooked and excellent. Activities are planned and available with much thought.

We have been so pleased to find Cornelius House for mum. It is a very caring place that puts residents at the centre of life there, looking after the needs of the individual. The staff are amazing, kind, compassionate, understanding and always with a smile. It always feels homely and I look forward
to popping in to see mum as she clearly enjoys her new home 10/10.

Both my mother and father lived in this Care Home and they could not have been cared for better. They were always treated with respect and affection and seen as individuals. Their interests were encouraged and their preferences always taken into account. The staff went far beyond the call of duty,
sitting for hours with my father in the last days of his life, providing sandwiches and tea at any time of the day or night and taking time to match outfits and jewellery for my Mum. Between them, my parents spent around 4 years at Cornelius House and I never had a serious complaint. Any little matters I did raise were always dealt with promptly and the staff were always responsive to feedback.

For family reasons, I have used/visited many care homes, and this one for several years. I have never heard staff complain or bicker about anything much. They are attentive, thoughtful, kind and altogether very caring. The manager leads by example and always finds time to listen and act on observations.
Residents
are always clean and tidy, as are the rooms and grounds. All the support staff take great pride in the quality of their work and well being of residents and each other.
The food is excellent and residents choose their meals and can select off-menu. The presentation is super - doilies provided, and real napkins! Guests are, without hesitation, offered drink and cake.
An improvement plan for medication management has clearly been executed e.g., documentation visible and up to date, list of trained staff on display. Cornelius House hasn't the wide range of facilities and events of a local 6* much larger newly built home but, in comparison, personal relationships and responsiveness is much better.
In my opinion, Cornelius House is the best of care homes which has maintained the execution of its caring ethos and excellence of service through its owners, exceptional staff and management.

Cornelius House is a very pleasant, well-run and effective care home. The house itself is attractive. Comfortable and well-provided. The staff are most welcoming, efficient and helpful, which is most reasoning and encouraging for residents.
The food is very good and the meals well prepared and attractively
presented. I have enjoyed my stay and would happily recommend Cornelius House to others.

I was warmly welcomed and given a clean, pleasant room with views over the garden. The washing facilities were cramped. The staff were kind, helpful and very nice. It was my first experience of a care home and I was pleasantly surprised, but I missed the freedom of my own home. However, the atmosphere
was warm and very friendly.

After a year-long illness involving a stroke which left my son with Aphasia (unable to speak), I was not very happy with the idea of him going into a care home at the age of 37, but how wrong was I? The manager and the team at HHH excelled at taking care of him to the point of spoiling him rotten! They
went above and beyond in all aspects of his care. I am certain that their encouragement helped him improve especially his speech. As his mum, a great weight was lifted from my shoulders when I saw the care he was getting. I cannot thank you enough!

My father spent the last 14/15 months of his life at Cornelius House. We were so impressed with the level of care and compassion he received from staff whilst he was there. The staff always had time for him and ensured he was kept clean and comfortable. A wide range of activities were arranged during
the week. The management of the home were extremely professional and nothing was too much trouble for them.

Cornelius House really felt like a "home" for my father and my mother who visited him regularly. Towards the end of my father's life, the level of care and dignity shown to my father and the wider family was exceptional. We will always treasure those memories and the effort made by Cornelius House to ensure he was able to die peacefully at "home" at Cornelius. We are so grateful to Cornelius, the managers and all the staff. We would un-hastingly recommend Cornelius House.

My Father was at Cornelius House for 3 very happy years. He was made very welcome right from the start and this continued throughout his stay. He never made any adverse comment to me about his care, and I could see that this was brought out by how I saw he was treated.
When I needed advice it was given
in a sincere and helpful way and when there were problems with my Fathers health, I was told very quickly.
The staff at Cornelius House always welcomed me sincerely when I visited and showed a genuine sense of concern for my Father. Although he did not always want to partake in some of the activities organised by the home, when he did take part you could tell by his response that he had thoroughly enjoyed himself. I cannot praise the staff who organised these activities enough - thank you.
With all the adverse stories in the news about care homes, time needs to be taken to show how wonderful many homes are - namely Cornelius House.

My husband has been a resident of 'Cornelius House' for over a year. In that time, his health has deteriorated. That was to be expected as he has had long-term prostate cancer with complications. With his loss of strength, his care has certainly been stepped up with him being moved to a more suitable
room and change of bed. The staff are now feeding him as this is necessary. They are always cheerful and patient with him. Until fairly recently he was able to spend time in one of the lounges where there are often things going on, but I'm afraid his health no longer allows this. As well as looking after my husband, they are very caring towards me as I visit often and have lunch on Sundays. I'll not only miss my husband when he leaves this world, I'll also miss the staff.

Considering the dark press the care sector has been getting lately, this small but friendly home in Fishbourne is a beacon of genuine care for the elderly.
My Aunt deliberately chose this home and never regretted her choice. She entered into the spirit of the entertainment offered and enjoyed herself
as long as she was able to participate. During the last months, after a fall, her carers couldn’t have been more encouraging and kind.
If I lived closer, I'd put myself on the waiting list.

I have worked at Cornelius for several years as a Complimentary Therapist, so I have lots of comments from the residents about Cornelius. Every resident has some things to say as to how a place should be run but they all agree that Cornelius is the best place to be. They all enjoy the activities,
be it a quiz or an imaginary trip around the country with the super activities lady. The staff never fail to smile and chat with the residents. All in all, it is a very comfortable and relaxed atmosphere which enables the residents to enjoy their stay. The garden gazebo is ideal for a morning or afternoon sit in the shade and enjoy the open air. The Summer garden party is great fun, with lots and lots of relatives visiting with grand children and great grand children.
What else can one say but I would move in when I reach a certain age!

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.688)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.688) out of 10 for Cornelius House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.988 for Cornelius House is calculated as follows: ( (82 Excellents x 5) + (1 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 83 Ratings = 4.988
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.7 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Cornelius House is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.7
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 20 registered maximum number of service users is 4, which has been reached with 7 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Care Manager Joined: 2018

I have worked in Health & Social Care for over 20 years and joined Cornelius House permanently last September as their Care Manager. Since leaving school, I have always worked in caring roles but gained my passion for working with the elderly when I returned to work as a care assistant in the community after having my children, working my way up into managerial roles.

I have a strong commitment to ensuring that our residents at Cornelius are enabled to have the best quality of life possible, ensuring that both their physical and psychological well-being are as important as each other. Our mantra is if we look after the physical health we are also looking after the psychological health and vice versa.

As a manager, I see my role as supporting my team to achieve the visions and goals of the home. We pride ourselves on creating a ‘home from home’ atmosphere, where everyone is part of the Cornelius family.

The last six months have been a time of transition for Cornelius, but with the support of the staff, residents and their families we have achieved so much in a short space of time. I can say with a strong conviction that I am proud of everyone involved and proud to be part of the team.

Here at Cornelius House it is like one big family, with our residents and staff it’s a home away from home, and I really enjoy working here at Cornelius.

I have been in care since I was 17, I left school and went to college to study health and social care. I have now been in care for 10 years and intend to stay here for as long as possible as it is where my passion is.

I started here at Cornelius House in 2018 as a Carer, within 6 months I was promoted to senior and then within the next year, I was made Team Leader and now have progressed to Deputy Manager. I am proud of my progress and the opportunities I have been given within the home.

I have always been passionate about giving the best care to the elderly for their lasting years and making it as special as possible. It is always a pleasure.

As a Deputy Manager, I am proud to say that we have an amazing team that will always jump to support each other, and nothing is too much trouble.

Paul

Paul Waring

Job Title: Head Chef Joined: 2013

My name is Paul and I have worked at Cornelius House for almost nine years. I started my career on the YTS (Youth Training Scheme) at the end of 1985 at a college in Brighton. I was highly motivated to begin with but after a year or so, I left the catering industry to focus on engineering where I stayed for a number of years.

In the early 90’s I decided to do some travelling in the West Country and settled down in Paignton where I worked in a hotel as a waiter for a few years. After a while I decided to re-engage my love and passion for cooking by accepting my first job in a care home based in Birdham, near Chichester. I had lost a lot of techniques and flair for cooking but with encouragement I gained all of that that back rapidly with my passion for creating a flair for cooking traditional food for elderly residents.

Over the next few years I continued to build my portfolio by incorperating both new and old dishes to menus for all seasons and for all tastes.

In 2012 I joined Cornelius house as a part time chef and after 4 years I took over the as Head Chef with full responsibility of the kitchen. Since James and Gary took over as owers of Cornelius House in late 2020, I was at first a little apprehensive on what was expected of myself. I found out fairly quickly that the commitment that James and Gary have for the residents both at Greensleeves and now Cornelius are second to none. I am now leading a small team where i am managing a handful of dedicted kitchen staff whom also have a passion for caring about the residents dietry needs. As a team I am looking forward to the journey we are undertaking here.

Finally, a chef, no matter how good I can be, it's not good cooking for yourself; the joy is in cooking for others...it’s the same with music. To me, there's no passionate chef without a great team.
