My mother has lived at Cornelius House for 18 months now, and loves it. I was a local GP for many years, so I know all the care homes in the area well, and knew that Cornelius House was the best by a long way. When it came to looking for a place for my mother to move to, there was therefore only one
choice, and we were lucky that they happened to have a vacancy at the right time. I am constantly impressed by the love, consideration and care my mother receives there, the kindness of the staff, and the huge range of activities, events and entertainments that are arranged for the residents. I feel it is exceptional, and that all the staff from the Matron down, genuinely care for the residents, and do all they can to provide a stimulating, loving, family environment for those they are looking after.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.688) out of 10 for Cornelius House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.988 for Cornelius House is calculated as follows: ( (82 Excellents x 5) + (1 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 83 Ratings = 4.988
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.7 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Cornelius House is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.7
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 20 registered maximum number of service users is 4, which has been reached with 7 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Care Manager Joined: 2018

I have worked in Health & Social Care for over 20 years and joined Cornelius House permanently last September as their Care Manager. Since leaving school, I have always worked in caring roles but gained my passion for working with the elderly when I returned to work as a care assistant in the community after having my children, working my way up into managerial roles.

I have a strong commitment to ensuring that our residents at Cornelius are enabled to have the best quality of life possible, ensuring that both their physical and psychological well-being are as important as each other. Our mantra is if we look after the physical health we are also looking after the psychological health and vice versa.

As a manager, I see my role as supporting my team to achieve the visions and goals of the home. We pride ourselves on creating a ‘home from home’ atmosphere, where everyone is part of the Cornelius family.

The last six months have been a time of transition for Cornelius, but with the support of the staff, residents and their families we have achieved so much in a short space of time. I can say with a strong conviction that I am proud of everyone involved and proud to be part of the team.

Here at Cornelius House it is like one big family, with our residents and staff it’s a home away from home, and I really enjoy working here at Cornelius.

I have been in care since I was 17, I left school and went to college to study health and social care. I have now been in care for 10 years and intend to stay here for as long as possible as it is where my passion is.

I started here at Cornelius House in 2018 as a Carer, within 6 months I was promoted to senior and then within the next year, I was made Team Leader and now have progressed to Deputy Manager. I am proud of my progress and the opportunities I have been given within the home.

I have always been passionate about giving the best care to the elderly for their lasting years and making it as special as possible. It is always a pleasure.

As a Deputy Manager, I am proud to say that we have an amazing team that will always jump to support each other, and nothing is too much trouble.

Job Title: Head Chef Joined: 2013

My name is Paul and I have worked at Cornelius House for almost nine years. I started my career on the YTS (Youth Training Scheme) at the end of 1985 at a college in Brighton. I was highly motivated to begin with but after a year or so, I left the catering industry to focus on engineering where I stayed for a number of years.

In the early 90’s I decided to do some travelling in the West Country and settled down in Paignton where I worked in a hotel as a waiter for a few years. After a while I decided to re-engage my love and passion for cooking by accepting my first job in a care home based in Birdham, near Chichester. I had lost a lot of techniques and flair for cooking but with encouragement I gained all of that that back rapidly with my passion for creating a flair for cooking traditional food for elderly residents.

Over the next few years I continued to build my portfolio by incorperating both new and old dishes to menus for all seasons and for all tastes.

In 2012 I joined Cornelius house as a part time chef and after 4 years I took over the as Head Chef with full responsibility of the kitchen. Since James and Gary took over as owers of Cornelius House in late 2020, I was at first a little apprehensive on what was expected of myself. I found out fairly quickly that the commitment that James and Gary have for the residents both at Greensleeves and now Cornelius are second to none. I am now leading a small team where i am managing a handful of dedicted kitchen staff whom also have a passion for caring about the residents dietry needs. As a team I am looking forward to the journey we are undertaking here.

Finally, a chef, no matter how good I can be, it's not good cooking for yourself; the joy is in cooking for others...it’s the same with music. To me, there's no passionate chef without a great team.
