My mum, who has been a resident for 18 months - and is cared for by magnificent, professional, dedicated staff - had the unfortunate experience of being very poorly last week. Mum needed urgent medical care, this was given super promptly by two wonderful members of staff. Protocol was followed, Paramedics attended, family were fully informed. Mum was treated with dignity throughout the ordeal, and whilst she recovered. Cannot praise all of Cornelius staff enough!

As a medical professional I was quite anxious when my family member needed respite care after a fall.

But from the first assessment whilst she was still in hospital to her last day at Cornelius House we couldn't have been more impressed. Great facilities and rooms, a lively activity programme and amazing food. But above all, each individual carer knew her, engaged with her and ensured she was safe and supported, whilst not being overpowering. We are so grateful to the staff for all their support.

My mum stayed at Cornelius house for 4 weeks for respite care following a fall and hospital admission.
From the first phone call to check on availability, the staff couldn't have been more helpful in ensuring that mum could leave hospital and receive appropriate care. We so appreciated the excellent communication and welcoming approach. We could visit at any time but knew that mum was being well cared for.

Mum really wanted to go home from hospital but she has said that she was well looked after and the staff were so helpful and caring. She really enjoyed her meals and appreciated being asked what foods she preferred. She took part in some of the activities and liked sitting outside in the sunshine.

I can't praise all of the staff at Cornelius House highly enough. My aunt and uncle have been residents there now for a couple of months and are so well looked after, the care given to them has been superb and therefore the family have no need to worry about them. The house has been undergoing a refurbishment recently and all the rooms look great. They put on a great deal of activities for the residents which really stimulates them and the food is very good, it always looks delicious. Visitors are always warmly welcomed, I recommend Cornelius House to everyone.

From the moment Mum arrived, every member of staff made it a priority to make the transition as easy as possible for both Mum and her family, and their kindness to us all was boundless.
Since then no effort has been spared to help Mum settle and become part of the Cornelius House family, and we are always so warmly greeted when we visit.
The house is always clean and fresh and the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming.
The staff are caring and vigilant and are always aware of any changes in Mum's health or needs.
There are a varied range of daily activities and the staff work hard to make sure everyone is included and has time to pursue hobbies and interests at their own level of ability.
A daily choice of delicious home-cooked meals is provided, and individual preferences are happily catered for.

The staff, in all roles, work as a dedicated, cheerful team providing the very best all-round care for our mum and peace of mind for the family.

The caring ethos and the teamwork among the staff were impressive. Their patience, kindness, and encouragement aided my recovery. The chef's flexibility and personal care coming to discuss my meal plans every day was so nice. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Cornelius House to any friends as well as coming back myself one day.

My mother-in-law has lived at Cornelius House for nearly four months and I cannot speak highly enough of the outstanding care she has received. The carers are so kind and thoughtful, my husband and I have also been made to feel very welcome whenever we visit, nothing is too much trouble. The food is excellent, my mother-in-law is a fussy eater but has praised the meals she has had, and has a good choice. The managers have gone out of their way to help her settle in, she is a very sociable person and has really enjoyed the trips, activities and entertainment on offer. We have just recently enjoyed the summer party with the most fantastic afternoon tea, it was lovely for us to spend the afternoon together enjoying the band in the sun - it felt like home.

My mother has been a resident for a few months from the spring of 2023. It was a difficult transition for her from home living and she has needed patient support from the staff at Cornelius House. She has certainly received that. There is a significant and successful effort to support her wishes. Great effort is made to include and engage residents with interesting activities including trips away from the home. Visitors always receive a warm welcome. Overall we have been delighted with care offered.

Heather CharleyJob Title:quality ManagerJoined: 2018

I have worked in Health & Social Care for over 20 years and joined Cornelius House permanently last September as their Care Manager. Since leaving school, I have always worked in caring roles but gained my passion for working with the elderly when I returned to work as a care assistant in the community after having my children, working my way up into managerial roles.

I have a strong commitment to ensuring that our residents at Cornelius are enabled to have the best quality of life possible, ensuring that both their physical and psychological well-being are as important as each other. Our mantra is that if we look after the physical health, we are also looking after the psychological health and vice versa.

As a manager, I see my role as supporting my team to achieve the vision and goals of the home. We pride ourselves on creating a ‘home from home’ atmosphere, where everyone is part of the Cornelius family.

The last six months have been a time of transition for Cornelius, but with the support of the staff, residents and their families we have achieved so much in a short space of time. I can say with a strong conviction that I am proud of everyone involved and proud to be part of the team.

Alice Bounds-Stevenson

Here at Cornelius House, it is like one big family, with our residents and staff, it’s a home away from home, and I really enjoy working here at Cornelius.

I have been in care since I was 17. I left school and went to college to study health and social care. I have now been in care for 10 years and intend to stay here for as long as possible, as it is where my passion is.

I started here at Cornelius House in 2018 as a Carer, within 6 months I was promoted to senior and then within the next year, I was made Team Leader and now have progressed to Deputy Manager. I am proud of my progress and the opportunities I have been given within the home.

I have always been passionate about giving the best care to the elderly for their lasting years and making it as special as possible. It is always a pleasure.

As a Deputy Manager, I am proud to say that we have an amazing team that will always jump to support each other, and nothing is too much trouble.

Paul Waring
Paul WaringJob Title:Head ChefJoined: 2013

My name is Paul and I have worked at Cornelius House for almost nine years. I started my career on the YTS (Youth Training Scheme) at the end of 1985 at a college in Brighton. I was highly motivated to begin with but after a year or so, I left the catering industry to focus on engineering where I stayed for a number of years.

In the early 90’s I decided to do some travelling in the West Country and settled down in Paignton where I worked in a hotel as a waiter for a few years. After a while I decided to re-engage my love and passion for cooking by accepting my first job in a care home based in Birdham, near Chichester. I had lost a lot of techniques and flair for cooking but with encouragement I gained all of that that back rapidly with my passion for creating a flair for cooking traditional food for elderly residents.

Over the next few years I continued to build my portfolio by incorperating both new and old dishes to menus for all seasons and for all tastes.

In 2012 I joined Cornelius house as a part time chef and after 4 years I took over the as Head Chef with full responsibility of the kitchen. Since James and Gary took over as owers of Cornelius House in late 2020, I was at first a little apprehensive on what was expected of myself. I found out fairly quickly that the commitment that James and Gary have for the residents both at Greensleeves and now Cornelius are second to none. I am now leading a small team where i am managing a handful of dedicted kitchen staff whom also have a passion for caring about the residents dietry needs. As a team I am looking forward to the journey we are undertaking here.

Finally, a chef, no matter how good I can be, it's not good cooking for yourself; the joy is in cooking for others...it’s the same with music. To me, there's no passionate chef without a great team.
