Penrice House was established as a Residential Care Home in 1978, as a registered charity. The House is a Grade 2 listed building.

Situated in its own beautiful grounds, approximately one and a half miles from St. Austell’s town centre, the Home is approached by a private drive, some three-quarters of a mile long, through a combination of flowering shrubs and woodland. Seating is placed along the driveway and around the grounds.

The Registered Care Manager & Penrice House pride themselves on offering a highly professional care service for the elderly, with a personal touch. Prioritising dignity and respect, they follow the ethos that residential care needn't be seen as a last resort but rather as a new start, where people are able to enjoy the later years of life with the peace of mind that everything is taken care of.

They are pleased to accept service users for long term stays and offer respite were there are vacancies.

It is a very difficult decision to help a family member decide on a care facility, but I cannot think of any other home I would want my mum to be in. It is a wonderful house in a fantastic setting. But above all, it is the staff that make this home amazing, every one of them. They really care for my
mum, and this is a great relief to me.

My Dad has been a resident at Penrice House for 18 months. Unfortunately, for most of that time, the Home has been subject to COVID restrictions and although this has not made things easy for either staff, residents or family and friends, I have been impressed with the way these have been implemented.
Every effort has been made to ensure the safety of staff and residents whilst allowing visitors to see their loved ones under carefully controlled arrangements. My Dad has been cared for with dignity and respect at all times and the staff are wonderful with him. There are many and varied activities arranged for residents to enjoy - a current favourite being the cinema sessions in the main lounge. Staff are proactive in keeping me up to date with Dad's condition and are always kind, helpful and discrete when dealing with his personal care. I cannot recommend them enough, thank you to all at Penrice House for your care, humour and discretion.
Reply from Jonathan Childs, Business Manager at Penrice House St Austell LtdThank you for your very complimentary review, we are very glad to hear that you are so pleased with the care that the team are offering to your father. We are all looking forward to the easing of the covid restrictions, so we can resume many of the things which are currently on hold due to the situation we all find ourselves in.

The quality of care at Penrice House is exemplary. The staff are caring, patient and work hard to provide a comfortable and enjoyable home life. Attention to detail is consistent and thorough; residents are frequently asked for ideas about improving provision and these are acted upon. The building is
warm, well-appointed and welcoming. The response to the pandemic was appropriate, proportionate and proactive, targeted on providing a high degree of safety. Overall the standard is excellent and I would recommend it without hesitation.

Penrice House is a beautiful house set in beautiful woodlands. It has been a care home for over 40 years. Most of the rooms are singles, many of them having private facilities. The food is excellent with a choice of menu for meals. Visitors are welcome at most times and there is a choice of activities
on weekdays. The home has a minibus, a shop, hairdressing salon, a small library and laundry. The staff are caring and helpful, the atmosphere relaxed and friendly. As the home is a charity, the fees are reasonable for what is on offer.

We appreciate our good fortune in finding Penrice House for our mother-in-law who has now been a resident for over 4 years. We simply could not wish for any better provision: the staff are all extremely well trained, with an emphasis on individual, attentive care. The house and grounds are absolutely
beautiful and we have been very impressed with the way in which there is constant re-decoration so that nothing ever looks tired or shabby. Mum has changed rooms several times and each time the room into which she moves is redecorated and carpets replaced. The food is home-cooked and plentiful with drinks provided throughout the day. The way in which Covid was dealt with was exemplary and we all felt as safe and secure as it was possible to be. The staff went to a great deal of trouble to celebrate Mum's 90th with us during lockdown. Mum has always been able to raise any concerns she has had, knowing that she will be sympathetically listened to and action taken.

  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 14 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.893 for Penrice House St Austell Ltd is calculated as follows: ( (152 Excellents x 5) + (14 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 168 Ratings = 4.893
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.85 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Penrice House St Austell Ltd is based on 14 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.85
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 29 registered maximum number of service users is 5.8, which has been reached with 14 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
